Thanks for sticking with me! I feel like it's been forever since I last posted! I had to put off this painting for a few days because I ran out of hairspray which I use to fix drawings... And kept forgetting to get more. 😆 . . . I put the tape layer on the painting where the gold is going to be. I really like how it looks like this... With the textured blue halo. Working on my first collaborative project! My sister and I stretched a linen canvas last summer and we're finally working on the underdrawing. We had a lot of fun spending the afternoon working on this. . . . Now... Something we forgot to consider (at least I forgot anyway) this artwork is going to be MASSIVE, so no matter how attached we get to it, we're not going to be able to keep it. Good morning friendlies! Question: Should art take shortcuts? I've been thinking a lot about shortcuts in art. For a long time, I was very... Prideful? Snobby? When it came to art- I use mediums that are as high quality as I can barely afford and take a long time on my pieces. Even with drawing, I never use pencils darker than HB and I don't smudge because I was taught that both those things are "cheating". I decided to take up comics again- a medium that practically REQUIRES shortcuts which lead me to find a video by a comic artist who took ten years to make his comic- realized how short life is, and maybe shortcuts shouldn't be looked down upon so much. So this morning I thought, "Screw it!" I found a 2B pencil, smudged to my heart's content, and I must say, I'm not displeased with the result! ... I wanted to start this morning on a more spiritual note. Self Portrait! I'm going to start painting my 2020 self portrait here soon. Here's the preliminary sketch. . . . So, just a bit of a recap for the "theme" of 2019, it was a year of equal parts ecstatic joy and love and bitterness and malevolence. I've had two very terrible day jobs that year, but they did help shape who I am as a person- stronger, tougher, more willing to stand up for myself, and maybe become a good force in other people's lives. On the other hand, my home, family, faith, and art goals have been bliss- a sanctuary and a group of wonderful, honest people to help me collect myself and strengthen me again to go back out and fight. Sometimes I like to make up stories about the people in my portrait references. This is Imelda. She has dreams of opening her own coffee shop someday. She works as a barista at a small coffee shop and is so good at her job, she may be a week from her promotion as shift manager. Little does she know she's actually from a fairy kingdom, having been brought to our world as a baby to escape the usupers who killed her royal family. 30 minute study of Rembrandt's "Old Woman Reading Book" as inspiration for a character I'm designing. . . . Working on a mini character design project. An old female "mentor" archetype. I don't have a name for her yet (I've just been calling her "female Gandalf"). She's sweet and kind, but was once a powerful sorceress in her youth- now she helps and guides the heroes reach their destiny and destroy the ultimate evil. While she is sweet, kind, and nurturing, when necessary, she becomes terrifying and is surrounded by ominous magic. . . . It will happen to many of us, but what kind of person do you want to be when you're old? Coming towards the end of your life? Will you be happy and accomplished? Sad that you didn't get to accomplish anything you wanted? Or not "accomplished" in the traditional sense, but still happy? Good morning everyone! Hope you're having a splendid Tuesday! Getting started with an eye study. . . . For the past week and a half, I've been organizing my mornings so that the first 30 minutes I spend of the day is dedicated to "learning time" (1 hour on my days off from my day job). This is where you do nothing but draw and an practice active learning to improve your art- the idea is to follow along with a book or video. . . Since I enjoy portraits the most, I've spent about 10 days drawing Loomis heads. I think I have them down, so now I'm moving on to eyes. Anatomy of the eye, etc. The past two mornings, I followed along a video by @rapid_fire_art on how to draw hyperrealistic eyes. It was fun to do.
