Today’s Doodle celebrates Paraguay’s National Day, which is known locally as Día de la Independencia Nacional. On this day in 1811, the land-locked country nicknamed “The Heart of South America” declared its independence.
The majority of Paraguay’s ethnic population is a combination of indigenous Guaraní ancestry and those of European, mostly Spanish, descent. This fusion of cultures is reflected in the traditional embroidered lacework introduced to Paraguay by the Spaniards, known as ñandutí (Guaraní for “spider web”), and among the linguistics of the Paraguayan populace, many of whom speak both Guaraní and Spanish.
In honor of the national holiday and its rich culture, the Paraguayan tricolor flag flies high across the nation. Depicted in the Doodle artwork, the flag of Paraguay is one of the world’s few national flags with different emblems on either side. In the center of one side is the Paraguayan coat of arms, and on the opposite, the treasury seal with the national motto: “Paz y justicia” (“Peace and Justice”).

ooc time: I usually don’t really like to bring IRL issues (specially over-political or sensitive subjects) to my blogs, but since Paraguay is a nation that tends to get overlooked by international media ( heck even here in South America), I’d like to take a moment to give a small TLDR summary of what has been going on in Paraguay in the last weeks:
- Paraguay and Brazil run the Itaipu, a dam located on the border of both nations;
- a few weeks ago, the president of the paraguayan state-run power company Ande was forced to resign due to an scandal involving a “secret” agreement run between Ande and its brazilian counterpart, Eletrobras;
- the agreement was related to the sales of all of the extra volume of energy produced by Itaipu, making the cost higher for Paraguay
- Both nations have access to 50% of guaranteed energy and 50% of the surplus produced, which they can sell;
- back in ‘09, former brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva alongside Paraguay’s Fernando Lugo renegotiated the agreement making it so that Brazil buy most of its consumption from the guaranteed portion (and it also happens to be the most expensive)
- it almost led to impeachment of current paraguayan president, Mario Abdo Benítez;
- People went to protest on the streets;
- the tension faded a bit since the agreement has been cancelled;
- there already is a trade agreement set by Brazil and Paraguay years ago in regards of how the energy produced is split and sold that is set to expire in 2023, which has always been surrounded by controversy mostly from the paraguayan side
- Itaipu by itself is a delicate subject in Paraguay, and its construction has always been an object of controversy, mostly for paraguayans, specially considering the historic context of how the project came to be back in dictatorship times ( paraguayan-brazilian relations have always been complex tbh )
