> It's quiet in Manburg, early morning. The sun is just starting to peak over the mountains in the distance. Very few are awake enough to notice a stranger picking their way through the city, making their way to the White House.

> A knock once, twice. Shifted blue hair swishes in a short ponytail. A purple and black uniform with gold highlights, black gloves. They walk with purpose, netherite longsword gleaming off their hip. A full face white mask covers their face, pristine enough that light reflects off it.

> They ascend the steps to the White House and pause at the door, knocking once, twice, thrice. Then they take one step back, falling into parade rest before the door and waiting.

The president opens the door, no care for safety. It’s not like anything could truly harm him anyway. He studies the figure, taking in their stance and weapon. A smile stretches slowly across his face.

“Old friend, I was wondering when I’d be seeing you again.”

> The figure removes their mask, and Coffee's keen red eyes stare back at faer friend. They smirk and speak teasingly.

As if you didn't explicitly invite me over for tea at such an ungodly hour of the morning. Better be damn good tea, Timeza, or at least good company.

Nobody else is around here, right? Would be awkward if somebody caught the president of Manburg with the local anarchist.

“Good tea? Debatable. This little server is lacking in quite a lot, and acceptable beverages is one of them.”

Time frowns as he opens the door for fae and steps aside to let the taller in.

“I wouldn’t worry about questions either. These pathetic people are far too scared to ask many anyway. As for company, I’d like to think I’m some of the best there is.”

Pathetic? Blinded, maybe, by loyalty to the government. Still surprised, by the way, that you ran for office here. If I'd known you were looking for more work, you could've taken over more paperwork back home in the Empire.

Time paused, taking in the words.

“It wasn’t my intention for her to die.”

He said softly, though there would be no such emotion in his eyes if Coffee were to look. He continued on to the impressive kitchen.

“This country, as it calls itself, is little more than a play yard. It was almost too easy in all honesty. I’m actually a bit disappointed in the spinelessness of its people.”

Time started the kettle.

“How is… Logtopia was it?”

Yeah, well, she did. Apparently, Chaos was the one to kill her which, I'm sure that won't cause lasting trauma.

Logtopia....... heh. It's a fucking mess, old friend. No organization among any of them. Got yelled at for attempting to consolidate the communal chests.

> And that lovely sign threat about being put in a box should anybody touch that particular chest mocks Coffee every time they walk past. Well, not just the sign. The voices too.

The people are no better. It's a cesspit of despair, really. Taking L'Manburg from them really did a number on them. I'm the only thing keeping the whole place from burning to the ground.

> They neglect to mention the plans of war against Manburg. Timeza surely knows, probably. But in case he doesn't-

Time seemed to ignore the fact that his daughter was an adult and had been for some time.

“Chaos is a wildcard, no loyalty. I may need to put eyes on that one.”

He hummed in thought, pouring the tea. He took a sip and grimaced, reaching for a flask in one of the cupboards.

“And I need to arrange for better trades. The drinks here are atrocious.”

If Time noticed faer silence, he didn’t mention it.

> Coffee watches Timeza reach for the flask, and their eyebrow raises. Why is everybody consuming alcohol all of a sudden? Especially Timeza? Fae has never seen their best friend drink like that.

They're children, sure, but they're traumatized. Between the independence war and the outcome of the elections, it's almost impressive any of them are still alive. Both their mental health and the fact that both Luce and Lullah are only on one life left according to this lives system that RES put in place.

> They hesitate.

Did you really have to exile them? They're your family, after all. Luce's been struggling a long time, and Lullah's only eight. It's unlike you.

He looked at faer tense posture.

“I did what was necessary.”

Coffee’s mug was set on the table in front of them. The action looked normal enough, no extra force seemed to be used, yet the clink the cup made rang through the house with an air of finality.

“It’s unlike you to question my decisions like this. If you have something to say, why aren’t you saying it?”

> Coffee flinches. The voices shriek at them to tell Timeza off for daring to speak to fae in that manner. However, they remain quiet for a moment, glancing at the mug.

I don't tend to question you because you don't make questionable decisions like this, Timeza. Both of us have seen the troubles government brings, which is why we created the Snowpire, as a safe haven. We individually promised to make things better in any territory we conquered. But things aren't getting better here, in Manburg. They're getting worse. I can see the wear and tear on this country, cracks that weren't here before the election.

> Fae looks up, eyes sharp in a way unusual to Timeza.

And you're a good father. You love Luce just as much as I do, if not more. At least, you did, before you had her murdered in cold blood for trying to protect her children when you exiled her. Have you any idea what that's done to her, to her children? To me? To see my best friend become..... this?

> They draw away from the counter, hands pausing at unbuckling armor. Coffee's tone is as cold as faer expression, but beneath that is very clearly hurt.

Time stares back, unflinching. His golden rams eyes more piercing than his usual blue ones ever were. For once, he looks dangerous. Despite his lack of wings in this form, he looks every bit an Angel. However, when he spoke…

“Forgive me old friend, I don’t mean to sound callus. This place…”

His voice was soft. It sounded kind, like it used to be.

“…it gets to you.”

It's too late to turn the clock back, but it's not too late to fix things. You're in a position to make this country prosper, why not take it? Why not live among the people as we do back home, make joy with them, feel their heartaches? Why not un-exile Luce and Lullah and T0mmmy, make amends?

Time’s voice stays gentle and kind, but his face shows no such emotion.

“What I did was certainly regrettable, but Coffee, you would have me appear weak in front of my people? Even if I were to reverse the exile, I wouldn’t be able to do so for a while yet, and you know this, dear one.”

The affectionate nicknames, the quiet words, Time was laying it on thick. Yet, his face stayed emotionless, almost as if he couldn’t be bothered to try and get his face to match his words.

.....You never thought we were being pushovers when we made mistakes and admitted them to our people.

Admitting you were wrong does not make you weak. You taught me that, when all I could think was being Its perfect weapon, was being like Techno, was pleasing It. You brought me out of that, you showed me it was okay to say hey, I was wrong, that strategy didn't work, and to admit that to others.

Timeza, you could reverse their exile right this minute, and you know that, and I know that, and all of Manburg knows that. But for some ungodsly reason, you don't want to. And it's time you admit that to yourself.

“Coffee, did it ever occur to you that I may have a plan? One that I can’t tell you?”

No, no it wasn’t sympathy now. It was something else.

“That maybe I’m trusting you to keep my daughter and her children safe?”

His tone was soul fire.

“Coffee, did it ever occur to you that I am lying?”

You don't lie to me, and you certainly don't keep things from me.

We have built our relationship on millennia worth of trust and mutual respect. On billions of private memories and shared secrets. I would kill for you, and I have on far too many occasions than I think either of us could count. If you don't want to share something, that's your personal choice, and don't you dare think you can get away with saying otherwise.

Time took a sip from his mug, the drink more alcohol than tea. He hummed, a familiar tune that no longer matched his vocal chords. He didn’t seem at all phased by faer rebuttal.

“Coffee, I have a plan for this little war country, this server really. Death has a plan. I know you prefer to stay out of business with the gods, but you know me.”

Time set his shoulders, a familiar gesture that didn’t match his form. The distinct lack of feathery sound almost jarring. He grimaced and took another sip of his ‘tea’.

“Please old friend, you must understand that I’m trying to protect them. I need you to keep my family safe. I’m trusting you to keep our family safe.”

If you wanted Luce and Lullah and T0mmmy safe, then you wouldn't have ordered all of Manburg after them. None of them are safe. They're on the run, they're traumatized, they are about as far from safe as you can-

> Then it hits. Our family. Timeza didn't say his family, he said our family. And that slams full-force in Coffee's subconscious, hard enough to leave them entirely speechless. Realistically, fae knows they've been a part of Timeza's family forever. The Your Family compass burning against faer hip under their still-remaining legging armor. The words Aunt Coffee echoing in faer head, picked up by the voices instantly, cooing about old memories of Luce as a little girl.

> Their mouth closes, and remains that way. A mixture of emotions, shock mostly, in faer eyes.

There it was. Time smirked slightly, the barest uptick of his lips, easily missed.

“I know you can protect our family, my blade. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to inform you of the plan beforehand.”

He raises a hand to rest it gently on their shoulder.

“I know you can keep them safe. I trusted you could then.”

Time steps back, eyeing the half removed armour and the untouched tea.

“You look like you want to leave. At least finish your tea and tell me if you’ve heard anything from the Snowpire before you go?”

> Still speechless, Coffee nods slightly. They let Timeza lead fae to sit, teacup in hand. Hesitantly, they take a sip of the drink. It tastes like shit, but it's grounding enough that the shock starts to wear off.

I- would like to remain a bit after tea, if that's alright. Jus' need to take the rest of the damn armor off, it's uncomfortable to sit with.

I received a shrike from Sophie a few days ago. She says they're preparing for winter right now. Main harvests were good. Trading's going well too, though there are a couple international conflicts brewing that could affect imports, so we're investing in more of those before war breaks out.

And, fucking Luxe is encroaching on our territory again. Bastard still hasn't learned that no means no, apparently. Thinking of telling her to remind him.

“She certainly has the means to get it through his thick skull if she were to try. Sophie was definitely the best choice to leave in charge.”

Time pours himself another beverage and sits down. The tension was gone now and Time smirked internally. He’d done it again. The talk of their empire was much less a loaded topic to dance on.

He tilts his head toward the flask, knocking his horns on a low shelf on accident.

Still getting used to those things, huh? Have to admit, still prefer the wings. I'm good at dodging those, but the horns look like they could cause damage.
