“The new beans are done looking around, I think.”
Eri was peeking out of the floorboards as, for the first time in weeks, their home was being toured. It had been months since anyone but the Heeres had lived there.
“What are they saying?” Jay asked, balancing Eri up on his shoulders as well as he could. He was trying to hear for himself, but his ears were not nearly as keen as his twin’s. Eri shifted, tipping his head so his ear was facing the crack.
“They’re looking to buy the place, sounds. Good news. We won’t have to ask Jake and his for help anymore. Hopefully they won’t be scared off when-”
As if sensing what they were about to say, the real estate agent spoke. “This house is rumored to be haunted, but according to the neighbors, it’s not too bad. Just small things being moved and such.” There was an edge to her voice that was telling of how this tended to end.
Much to all listeners’ surprise, this garnered an excited response.
“DUUUUDE! That’s so cool! Rich, we gotta get this place. Have ghost buddies!!”
“Fine, fine. You’re lucky this place is frickin’ nice. I didn’t think renting a duplex would be this affordable.”
“It’s cuz the ghosts, probably!” A jovial laugh rang through the room.
Eri flattened his ears against his head, frowning in agitation. “They’re loud.”
“They’re beans.” Jay consoled, lifting him down off of his shoulders. “And it’s a good thing they’re here. Four mouths is a lot to feed when there’s no food to find.”
“I suppose. I preferred the last group who were here. They had a lot of useful things.” Eri tugged at his jacket, something long since borrowed from one of the many dolls the last bean’s children had. “That’s where mom found Jere’s tatty cardigan.”
Jay smiled, a little sadly. “That’s true, but we’re in no place to be picky. We have to take what we can get. Let’s get back to the base, tell dad and Jere what’s going on.”
“Okay.” Eri looked up towards the crack, the light shining through and casting a line on his face. Something about all this was… foreboding. But Jay didn’t seem at all bothered. He didn’t like his intuition being mismatched from his twin’s, it unsettled him greatly, so in that moment he made the decision to just ignore it.
Everything would be fine. It was a good thing they were there. This was good luck, it had to be. After everything, they deserved a little good luck.
