Important Story About Lafayette

Lafayette, being an avid supporter of liberty, justice, and equality, was of course an abolitionist. He tried to convince Washington to help him carry out a plan where they’d buy slaves, free them, and then set them up as free tenants. He ended up carrying out this plan by himself.

Anyway, there was also this slave named James Armistead who volunteered to work under Lafayette as a spy during the Revolutionary War (his intelligence was instrumental in winning the Battle of Yorktown). The two got so close that, when James was freed years later after the war, he added the name Lafayette to his; his official name is James Armistead Lafayette. When Lafayette came back to the US forty years later, he was travelling in his carriage when he saw James in the crowd. He ordered his carriage to stop where it was, jumped out, and rushed to embrace him.

The point is this is adorable and if you don’t think this is the tightest shit get out of my face
