It was no surprise that Chic immediately went for the strawberry pocky and a bottle of slurp juice.
“Sis always tells me I shouldn’t eat this late at night- says it’ll give me nightmares.” she opened one box on the way back to the bed. “But I’m already having nightmares so maybe it’ll cancel it out?”
She let out a soft chuckle, kicking her feet playfully against the blankets as she took a bite. What a rebel!
“Your husband- Raven? How come I never see him around? Don’t married couples usually live together?”
Red quirked up an eyebrow when her roommate mentioned her sister’s advice. Maybe this was a mistake? Eh, whatever. It couldn’t hurt to see what would happen.
At the mention of her husband, she redirected her gaze to the ceiling and breathed a stream of air out her nose with a half-amused grin. “They do, yeah,” she agreed. “But Raven does his, uh, ‘job’ during the nighttime. He can get around better without being seen that way.”
Red scratched the back of her head. It’d been forever since she even gave thought back to those times, when she and Raves were constantly at each other’s throats over trivial things like V-bucks, hop rocks, and Shadow Stones.
Now? They just fought over what pizza toppings were socially acceptable.
“He gathers information for our team, and sometimes random people who need it. ‘The birds have eyes,’ you know? But the only piece of info I can never get out of that stubborn birdbrain is why he refuses to wear the dang star patch on his outfit.”
"Rosy..." Chic was carefully rubbing her eye with one hand, a pillow grasped in the other. She looked tired and was on the verge of tears- Another nightmare, it seems. They've been very prominent lately. Unable to fall back asleep, she figured some late night company would help. "Whatcha doing?" - Chic (fortnite-alteregos)
She’d been doing what she did every night she stayed at home base—chilling in bed watching NoobTube videos on her phone until she fell asleep—though it only worked half the time. Red’s ears perked up on instinct when she heard the small voice in the doorway, and her attention relocated from the screen to a very tired Chic. Immediately, curiosity piqued her interest.
“Just watching some dumb videos,” she responded with a tilt of her head. Red rotated her body so she was sitting with her legs hanging over the edge, and after putting her phone aside smoothed a hand back through her half-rumpled hair. “Why, what’s up?”
“I can’t sleep.” she replied with a pout. “The same nightmare of drowning in a pitch-black pool again.”
She hugged her pillow against her chest, looking at the knight with those weary eyes.
“It feels awful every time I wake up from it and it doesn’t feel right and just- I’m tired.” she buried her face into the pillow.
Poor kid. It wasn’t the first time she’d had that dream, but every time she did, it only made Red weary as to how severely it was affecting her mental health. She couldn’t continue on like this, but what was she supposed to do? The Star Force tank fighter wasn’t exactly a psychologist, so…
“Hey, hey, come on.” Red pulled herself up from the bed and approached, resting a hand on Chic’s head and ruffling her hair with a soft grin. “It’s alright. C’mon, you can stay in my room for the night if you like.” She gestured an arm back to the empty bed as if saying ‘make yourself cozy’ and after getting situated plopped down at end near the footboard.
Red leaned her head back, craning her neck to look at the sky out the window. It was dark, no doubt, but a few bright stars were there to light up the inky blackness. She thought about the last time she enjoyed a night this tranquil—the year before, when the group had just arrived on the new island, the night after everyone found each other again. Chaos bloomed on the battlefield after that, and even with things as tense as they were, the possibility of an island-wide civil war?
She felt at peace.
“So…” Red bit her lip in contemplation before she turned back to Chic. “You wanna talk about it? The dreams, I mean. I used to have ones like yours, too. Er, not the abyss part, but… You know.”
At Red’s welcoming gesture, Chic nodded, making her way towards the bed…and then proceeding to crawl underneath it, dragging the pillow down with her.
She could only see a bit of the sky from where she lay, but the sight of the stars, along with Red’s mere presence was enough to soothe her.
“It reminds me of my boss.” she replied, voice a little muffled from under the bed. “I can’t shake the feeling that he’s coming for us or…something like that. I’m scared- not for myself but for you and the others.”
Red’s eyes noticeably widened when she realized Chic had opted for the floor underneath instead of the bed itself. As such, she leaned back and laid on her side while they talked, chin propped up in her hand as she mulled it over.
“You mean the goop man, right?” she pondered. “The guy who gave you that thing with the green eyes?” It had to be him. She hadn’t learned of any other thing on the island that could give the poor girl so much grief, even when he wasn’t around.
“…Susie, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret.” It was at that point she let out a long steady breath through her nose and smiled. “In the eleven seasons I’ve been active, I have seen more chaos in this world than any man, woman, or child, as have some of my teammates. We’ve dealt with supervillains, vikings, werewolves, cube monsters, ice monsters, a maniacal ice king, a volcano king, and a sentient cube. We’re all kind of numb to the idea of fear by now. But you know what the good thing is about all this?”
Red leaned over the edge of the bed so her head was hanging down to peer at Chic. “We’ve got you here. You can tell us everything we need to know to prepare for what’s coming. That way, if he is coming? We’ll be ready.”
Looking up at Red with hopeful eyes, Chic offered a smile in return (though it was impossible to see under the bed’s shadow).
“People say no one has ever seen him.” she began. “I don’t know what gave them that idea but that’s not true. Sorana, Hazard, Riptide, Scratch, Toxin and…me. The 6 of us who asked for his favor.”
She was going to tell the rest of Star Force and E.G.O when they had the big meeting, but she figured Red should be the first to know.
Her hand slipped out from under the bed to trace out the imaginary shape of a room on the floor for Red to see.
“He’s always in this red-tinted room, deep underground our headquarters.” Her finger ran in a small square, indicating the entrance. “There’s a heavy bulkhead door sealing up the room. The Sludges are the only ones strong enough to open it for us.”
She moved her finger a line forward, making six dotted gestures inside the first room.
“There are six pods in this room, all containing someone from the old world. The pods are all hooked up these pipes and hoses that lead to the room he’s in, straight ahead. I don’t know what he keeps them for, but he seems to be draining something from each of them.” she paused for a moment, trying to recall the names of their captives. “One of them was called Rox, I think? …Catalyst…and uh…”
As she went by the names of the captives, none of them particularly rang a bell…until the last one.
“Calamity.”
Red watched Chic’s hand trace along the carpet. She could mostly follow along, and the demonstration seemed simple enough. So this guy had a secret room, huh? It sounded cliche to her, but it was to be expected. She rested her head in her crossed arms as she lied down and listened along. When she mentioned the captives, her attention focused sharply. He was draining people? That… Yeah, that didn’t sound good. The team would definitely have to update the status of impending threat from “terrorist group” to “terrorist group with hostages” when they got the chance.
But when she got to that last name? Her tongue caught in her throat amid a half-choked gasp. Red’s heart dropped in her stomach, a cold sweat forming on her forehead as she stared blankly at the carpet. It… It couldn’t be…
Could it?
A shake of her head brought her back to reality. This was definitely serious. Red sucked in a deep breath, and on the exhale counted to ten in her head. She didn’t want to lose her composure in front of Chic when the girl was already going through so much. She’d bring it up later with the others, but for now? They just needed to cool down and settle in for the night.
“Wow.” was the first word out of her mouth accompanied by a half-hearted grin. “This guy sits in his room all day while he sends his henchmen out to do his dirty work? What a dick.” One hand raised to her eyes and rubbed. The lure of sleep was working, alright, but she couldn’t doze off before her, little sister new friend found the peace she needed. “That’s good to know, though. Now we have a reason to make a move before they catch on.”
She leaned over and looked down at Chic again, suppressing a snort. “You sure you’re comfy down there? I’ve got actual blankets up here and a gorgeous view out that window.”
“Right?” Chic nodded with agreement at Red’s remark about Chaos Agent. “Like every villain ever. He’s even got a scary guard hiding in the shadows in there to keep intruders out.”
She hugged her pillow tighter, feeling a little more at ease knowing that should anything go wrong, at least someone else knew what to expect in the red room.
Sliding out from under the bed until the upper half of her head was visible, she looked up at Red, dust bunnies gently resting on her hair.
“I dunno, you got enough space? I wouldn’t want to intrude…”
Her head popped out, and- Why was she like this. Red had to do everything in her power to hold back a laugh, and nodded earnestly as she waved a hand. “Plenty!” she reassured Chic. “Raven and I bunked together here, and you’re maybe half his size, so it’s all good.”
Things were shaping up nicely. Quickly, Red scooted over and yoinked the extra pillow out from the crevice between the bed and the wall, fluffing it up before placing it on the other side as she smoothed out the blanket in one flick of the wrists. Her legs scrunched up so her knees were level with her chest. Just to be sure the dark wasn’t all that scary too, she reached over and extended her arm to the bedside lamp, hitting the button at its base as the light illuminated their corner of the room.
“Well, I guess the night’s not so scary when you’ve got a buddy and a night light, huh.” Red pursed her lips and looked up curiously. “…Yooooouuu want something from my secret snack stash?”
“In that case…don’t mind if I do.” Chic rolled out from underneath the bed, shaking the dust off herself like a puppy would to get its fur dry, then climbing onto the bed, making herself comfortable on her side.
When the nightlight was turned on, there seemed to be an innocent glimmer in Chic’s eyes from the light- the eyes of kindness and warmth that was often lost behind a cruel shade of green.
“You have a secret snack stash!?” she sat back up almost immediately, awaiting the big reveal. “Pleasehavesomethingwithstrawberry-”
“Sure do!” Red boasted. She rocked herself up and off the bed, stepping around her dresser to gesture to a Join Star Force Today! poster hanging on the wall in an odd location. “I have to keep the good stuff hidden so Carbide won’t steal it.”
With but one elbow bang against the drywall, the motivational poster ever so gently floated away, revealing behind it a secret cavern packed with all kinds of delicious high-calorie treats. Popcorn, sodas, slurp drink, cookies, chips, and—possibly leftover from Valentine’s Day—a box of strawberry pocky.
“Uh...” She forced a grin and chuckled. “Drift and I made that hole in the wall when we fought over who got the room. Convenient though! Help yourself.” Red opted for a bag of popcorn and a bottle sitting on the top shelf, but she had no problem lending whatever may exist in the hole to Chic’s stomach.
