Staci clutches Isacc and pulls himself up with surprising success, grinning even as sweat breaks out at his hairline, looking at him like he's seeing him for the first time again. He honestly doesnt know if he holds onto Isacc so tight because he needs the support, or if he just missed him.

They stumble to their destination, Staci leaning against Isacc, whispering giddy nonsense in his ear, like - "You beautiful son of a bitch." And, "I fucking love you." And "I can't believe you did it. You did it!"

By the time they enter another room, Isacc is mostly dragging Staci to keep him moving forward. A lead ball rolls around in Staci’s head, making him feel off balance, heavy. The world tilts and he drags Isacc down with him into a bed of fur.

He doesn't even think about it as he pulls @deputy-rook against his chest - he's so warm and his hair is soft against Staci’s cheek - it's as natural as toeing his boots off and kicking them over the edge of the bed.

Something about the way Jacob asks that... his voice so soft, almost as soft as his touch - yeah, feels good? - temporarily crosses his wires. He realizes he's squeezing Isacc's hand like a lifeline, his boot squeaking against the tile as he squirms like a cat who's been petted too long.

Staci goes still as they go back and forth. He sees the crease in Jacob's brow, the determination in Isacc's voice - the gears in their brains surely spinning through every reason it'll blow up in all their faces.

"Even if it doesn't work... we tried. That'll mean something."

It already means something to him.

He assumed concern from Jacob was strategic - if Staci was too sick to transport, it blew up his deal with Isacc.

But @deputy-rook ... Did something to him.

"Do you think... You could help me walk?" He squeezes Isacc's hand while staring up into Jacob’s eyes imploringly. He doesn't think he could stand the indignity of either of them seeing him hauled over Jacob’s shoulder like a dead deer. "I can do it, with both of you here..."

He sits up, to prove to himself and everybody else that he can. And then he patiently waits for someone to help him up.

He doesn't know how the idea will go over - it could be dead in the water. But he saw the opportunity glinting by like a fishlure, and once his mind grabbed onto it, the barbs hooked in deep.

@deputy-rook proved he can negotiate with Jacob. Maybe he is the only one who can. Once Staci is better, he can help - they could earn the freedom of more captives. Maybe they could even start to recover their dead.

And maybe... Jacob would stay true to his word, and Isacc would be safe.

And, maybe, once this is all over, and law returns to the land... Staci can use Jacob’s cooperation with hostage negotiation to convince the government to spare the man's life.

"That feels really good..." Staci's eyes flutter closed.

His fingers reflexively tighten around Isacc's hand, his thumb stroking the back of his knuckles with the same soothing rhythm as the fingers carding through his hair.

"So... Yes to the secret alliance?"
