Hey, Mike. Those are some great suggestions, I appreciate those. I’ll build on that and see if there are any events happening in the surrounding towns. I wouldn’t mind going out of town, really, I haven’t been in quite a while. But, I don’t know if now is the best time sadly. Hopefully soon. It would be nice to get out of town for a little bit, I can’t remember the last time I had a legit vacation.

I hope you get a chance to go on a real vacation soon Dave. Teachers definitely deserve to enjoy their breaks. How are things going otherwise Dave?

Dude… you’re breaking my heart. Not being a fan of The Office is basically a crime in my casa. Never even seen Party of Five, what’s it about?

Sorry, I’ve tried several times without much luck. I can watch an episode if its on and someone wants to watch it, but it’s not my go to. Party of Five is a show from the mid 90s-- although they tried a reboot in 2020. But it’s about a family of 5 kids that are orphaned. And how the oldest takes over the family to keep the kids together, and the family business to support them, and all the trials and struggles they face. Matthew Fox, Scott Wolf, Neve Campbell, Jennifer Love-Hewitt all were key characters. My ex in college was into all things 90s and got me watching it. Its still a bit of a comfort show for me I guess.

Yeah, thanks. Alright, I’ll keep that in mind. I had Papaya salad with crispy spring rolls and crispy fried chicken dumplings. And an order of godess garlic beef. Which is basically just a beef stirfry with a garlic brown sauce. That is one of my faves. Is it hard being away from “home” so much? Or do you just learn to bring and make parts of home with you? I’ve been here six years now, medical school and then two years so far of my residency. I am looking forward to it. I think I’m going to head out to Corey Beach. I’ve heard good things about it from some of my coworkers.

I was actually thinking about that, but I didn’t want to bring it up, just in case it was a sore topic, but I’m glad to see it wasn’t all that bad. From a critical moment in your life, it led you in a total different way, but I’ve always thought things happen for a reason, you know? I mean, I am sorry to hear that you couldn’t continue your dancing career and dreams, but I’m sure many people are happy you’re their doctor now! That’s a good idea, man. I wouldn’t go quite that far but there is no point in dwelling too much on things that can’t be changed. At least I was inspired to do something else, and have the skills to do so. That is the hope, yes! Although at this point as a resident I’m just one of their doctors. Yes, some people can be, I agree.

No, not like you’re implying no. But I mean she’s Tina. She was my first real girlfriend. We... we have a lot of history. I’d be sad if our relationship got to the point where she was just a friend. That’s just me. Sorry you feel that way. For my part-- I know I am very discrete. Especially when it comes to some subjects.

If I ever need a tour guide, I know who to go to, dang. You've been all over. That must be really cool. I've always wondered what's out beyond all of these corn fields. I've never been on a road trip for so long, no. This one time I got to go with some friends to a waterpark in Toledo, Ohio but that's as far as I've gone. It was a hotel called the Kalahari and inside of some parts it's decorated like a mix between a safari and what people think Hawaii looks like when they don't live in Hawaii. There was only like one water slide, but it was still pretty tight to hang out all day in a rad ass looking swimming pool with palm trees made out of pool noodles everywhere.

Ha, I’ve never thought of it like that but yeah, I have tips for an epic roadtrip between Chicago to New York City, with Lima along the way. Only one slide? Did it have a lazy river or a wave pool? Honestly, a pool day would be awesome right about now, am I right?

Your plans for the evening sounded perfect, and I desperately hope you succeeded in going through with those plans. I haven’t had Thai food in forever, I might have to change that tonight. I’m working on getting out of where i am and back to NYC as soon as possible, so that has preoccupied a lot of my time this week. After that though, some vegging out sounds pretty incredible, i might need to take a page out of your book. Did you have a relaxing weekend?

After 32 hours straight at the hospital because of an emergency, yeah, it was exactly what this doctor ordered. Oh yes, you should. I can rec the place I got to the most, and even what I got the other night. Super delish! Oh man, there is no place like home right? Crazy to think that New York City is home now, but it is. Go right ahead, and take all the pages. Someone should. No, there wasn’t time for a relaxing weekend here. I worked straight through and continue straight through until Thursday afternoon, then I get a 4 day weekend, which I had to swap some shifts for-- hence this long stretch for me. I’m pretty sure I’m headed to the beach, with a hammock, a book, and sunscreen.

I guess there are plenty of other things we thought we’d be doing back when we were at high school, that are way different to what we’re doing now. But like I said, if it’s something that fulfills you in a way that makes you love it, then that’s all that matters. Well… because I thought they would be looking for you to hurt you or something. You never know with some people!

Ooh… That’s nice of her though. There are things that you just can’t forget, and she will always be a worried bunny. That’s just one of the many things that makes her a special friend to someone.

More true words may never have been spoken Blaine. To think I fought my father so hard on not following in his footsteps, not going into medicine, and instead following my passion for dance. And now here we are. An unfortunate injury later, a bit of inspiration from the medical professionals that helped me, and I’m exactly where my father wanted me to be. Sometimes I shake my head at it all. It’s true, you never know with some people, but even if that was the case, it wouldn’t be something I’d put out publicly to people. Just...big no for me.

Tina is the best. And 95% of the time I’m glad she is so persistent at keeping the communication going, reaching out, tracking me down. I might actually need that. She’s so much more than a friend, but you’re right, these are some of the qualities that make her the best kind of friend to have.

Yeah. Sure. That would work too. Take a page out of Tina’s book.

I suppose it doesn’t get any more busy than with Medical School, which sucks in many ways, but as long as you’re doing what you love to do, what drives you, it’s all for good, right? Oh, pheew! I got scared for a moment there, and it is weird, now that you mention it. Maybe someone who was looking to thank you for taking care of them recently? Your mom just as intense as mine. When she doesn’t to get to hear from me for a couple of days, the message box on my phone gets filled with her complaining about that, although in my case, I’m more lazy than anything else. You on the other hand, you have a good, valid reason not to return a message at the instant.

I love it, man. I really do. Adults, yeah.- almost there. But still, it’s being a wild, and awesome ride. I teach Music at the Performing Arts School there, and I often compose the music for many of the plays that we put on there. Haha, I know, that was vague, right? It’s called The Play Tone, and it on the East Village. I play every other weekend there. I got this weekend, then next I’m off. If you want to come by let me know, man. I’ll tell the manager to save you a good table there.

They’re both busy, in their different ways. Medial school was a lot of classes, a lot of studying. Residency is a lot of time at the hospital. Even when it’s not busy, they keep you busy. And then we have days where it all goes a little sideways and we get very busy. This is true. It might not be what I thought I’d be doing, but I feel inspired to do this now. Scared? Why?

Oh no! I meant that friends will come find me at the hospital. Like Tina, when she is in the city. If she can’t get ahold of me, she’ll show up at the hospital looking for me. Or she’ll call or stop by my parents’ house when she’s in Lima. Which is fine, they love her. My mom is generally pretty good, she remembers how it was when my father was going through this. But she likes to pass on the messages from others.

That’s great Blaine. I’ll keep the name of the club in mind and I’ll let you know. I usually end up working weekends, unless I book/trade days off. Plus two of our shifts don’t really coincide with evening plans. I am planning a 4 day weekend next weekend, but it sounds like you’re off. Maybe next time.

I don’t know anyone who has responded to being yelled at for someone’s number and it has gone well for them. But I’m sure it’s happened for a small few.

Yikes. Have they been keeping you busy? Isn’t that what they typically have on call rooms for? Or is that just a TV show thing they throw in there? I’ve heard it’s a thing but who knows. I’ve been doing okay, can’t complain too much. Keeping myself busy.

There are always exceptions right?

Yeah. Summer tends to bring out some wild and weird needs for trips to the ER especially. There are several on call rooms, but the senior doctors end to snag them-- it’s a bit of a seniority thing.

Keeping busy is always a good thing. What are you doing to keep busy? Even if I don’t have a lot of time to myself, I love to hear what others are doing.

You’re right, you win.

I’m sure some people would agree with that. So how are those tv show recs going for you? I can add in audio books. I would not get nearly as much done if I didn’t have audio versions of some of the law books I have to look back on for case research. They make them for regular books too, I hear. From the sound of this conversation, we both need to find way more interesting lives.

Sure it would be great to have someone to come home to, or at least to see at the end of a long, hard day. But the guilt that would come with the amount of time spent at work would be difficult to deal with. Oh yeah, I had a couple of texts from med school that I got on a audio as well as a hard copy. Diagrams, and cutaways aren’t always easy to describe in audio format, but for the rest of the information, it’s great. I ended up falling back on an old favorite. I got some movie recs, a couple of tv show recs, and a couple of you tube recs.

I don’t know if it says our lives are not interesting, or if we’re just currently in a very dedicated to our careers part of our lives. I do wonder if I’d have more time, and perhaps more of a life if I was still dancing, instead of having gone to medical school. Assuming I could have made it as a dancer, that is. It’s hard to know sometimes.

Oh, man.. You meant tv shows then? For me, it never hurts to have Friends on the background. I know that show by heart, so if I fall asleep, or doing some chores around my place, or simply chilling on the couch, it keeps me company.

Yeah, I know that feeling. To be that submerged in work, your life becomes the people you see at work. Don’t worry about it! I understand how adult life dragged us in different directions, and that time is not always we have a lot to spare; but hey, we’re here now, so it’s cool we get to catch up! .. Why would anyone want to hunt you down??? Is that secret code for mobster or something?? I’m good, man. I’m a professor at NYU. Performing Arts. And I also have a job-ish, at a local club, a small one, where I get to play some of the songs I written and stuff… I mean, I’m busy most of the time, but I don’t complain. What about you?

I didn’t specify but I had a pretty good feeling I wasn’t going to be able to stay awake through a movie. Not after the day(s) I’d had. Yeah, I get that. I was looking for something I maybe hadn’t seen before, but in the end I went with a comfortable favorite anyway.

Yeah, residency is life right now. I’m hoping this last year of it will chill a little since there are other things that we have to tack onto it, but I’ll have to wait and see. Oh! I mean I’ve had people stop by the hospital looking for me, which seems weird, but it’s happened. Or people who know my parents well enough to call and ask about me so then I get a call or text from my mom that goes something like “oh I heard from so and so the other day Michael and they said they haven’t heard from you in ages, you don’t return calls, you don’t text and they’re just worried.” It’s a nice feeling people will go out of the way like that, but sometimes it can’t be helped if I take a while to be able to return a call or text. It is probably easier to like show up at the hospital or my apartment or something.

Oh wow, a Professor. That’s really cool Blaine. How do you feel teaching adults? What kinds of classes are you teaching? That’s great about the club too. Where is it? Local in New York City can be just about any of hundreds of clubs I’d imagine. Not that I’m familiar with that scene. I’ve barely gotten to explore the city at all despite the number of years I’ve been here.

Yeah it’s been a while. It’s all good though. Just busy. But that’s not always a bad thing. And yes, sorry, I’m horrible about keeping in touch sometimes. The people that tend to keep up with me are either people I work with, or ones that like to hunt me down. How are you Blaine? What are you up to now?

You know, it just really dawned on me how close summer school is to being over. This time next week my albeit shortened summer vacation will have officially begun…And I don’t have a single plan. Lima hasn’t ever been the most thrilling place, but if anyone has any suggestions I would be open to them..

Do you want to stay in Lima? I mean it's summer vacation. Why not take a road trip? There are a couple of day trips that you could do, or some longer ones where you might need to pack a bag for a couple of days. You could just drive and see where it takes you, or pick somewhere specific. Chicago is not that far and I can recommend all kinds of things there. Cleveland has the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Take in a sporting event of some kind. Visit a local zoo... some of the animals are so adorable. Find an amusement park, check out any fairs or summer concerts....
