Billy: I am. It’s actually been very mild, which means not much in the way or snow yet, but I get to wear a lighter jacket, so I feel like it’s an even trade.

Billy: I’m a little late to answer, but Hannukah with my family has been really good.

Billy: Though I think Mom “casually” asked what Tommy was doing and told me to “Make sure he felt welcome to spend Hanukkah with us” like... ten times. Tommy.

Menorah??

It’s a lamp.

Billy: I’m not sure if that was a joke, the use of “menorah” as a general term, or an honest mistake, but I guess it was hard to see Tommy’s lamp all that well! This is a good opening to talk about the menorah, though, so I’m going to take it.

Billy: Though there are religious variants just like anywhere else, a kosher menorah generally has nine spots - one for each night of Hanukkah, and one for the shamash or servant candle. The shamash or servant candle’s spot is above the spots for each night of Hanukkah, and each spot must be arranged in a straight line - though that rule is often bent. To be entirely fair to our awesome question-asker, the technical term for a Hanukkah Menorah is a Hanukiah, and “Menorah” could be used to refer to any candle holder. It just… usually isn’t. So, for anyone who’s ever wondered what makes a menorah a menorah - specifically a hanukiah, there are your basic signs: nine spots, one higher, usually in a straight line. Of course, this doesn’t take into account the menorah used during the rest of the year in many synagogues and temples - that one has seven branches, and also wouldn’t be in Tommy’s bedroom.
