Something that is very important to sign language around the world is home signs. The reason being is because people who haven’t been exposed to a language still want to communicate so they make signs that really only people who are around often would understand. That is what makes a home sign.

We found that the Turkish and American deaf children used not only the same production probability and ordering patterns to indicate who does what to whom, but also used the same segmentation and conflation patterns to package manner and path.

I enjoy this quote because it shows that no matter where you are, you still have the capability to learn language. This article goes on to talk a lot about gesturing and if Deaf people could form a sentence using it.

This is definitely something I recommend you read. It allows you to learn something the is important for many Deaf people all over the world.

In this video I wanted to show you the similarities in the alphabet of a few sign languages. I used the American Sign language, French Sign Language as well as German sign language.

Though there are many different types of Sign language across the world, many of them have similar lexical components.

Several studies that have compared lexical items across sign languages generally agree that sign languages are lexically more similar to each other than are spoken languages

One of the reasons why there might be such a similarity is because of how many SL (sign languages) came from a different SL. For example, American Sign Language started with the influence of French Sign Language. Though ASL slowly stopped using the French sign language, you can still see the similarity. The group of BANZSL which is the British, Australian, and New Zealand sign language family are all similar.

Do you think studying sign language is important?

As I said above, do you think that studying sign language is important? Not just the language but the people who use it. Do you think that we could learn something new from it?

Well Susan Fischer has studying Sign language for many years and heres what she has to say about the topic.

I first got into sign language research by a fluke, but I remained in the field because I continue to believe that sign languages can answer important and interesting questions about language in general, and that they force us to face issues that need to be addressed in all linguistic research, but that we have previously gotten away with sweeping under the rug.

In this article, you will questions answered as well as learning more about the studying of sign language. It talks not only about American Sign language but different signs as well. It is a very interesting find.

I want to talk about International Sign Language. There isn't just one sign language for every language in the world but there is IS which can be used if two people use different sign languages. As the articles say, “IS is heavily influenced from American Sign Language.” So many times you will see ASL in these signs.

International sign is somewhat difficult to learn. This is what this article says about learning IS.

Experience has shown that it is difficult to teach IS to anyone not knowing at least one or more national sign languages. Exposure to a number of sign languages and different signing styles is usually a better contributor to a signer's knowledge of IS than a specific IS ‘language' course.

So if you ever want to learn IS, maybe try to learn some different sign languages.

In this article you’ll find how different age groups knew numbers. They do multiple different types of tasks that show the knowledge of numbers. One of my favorite figures in this article shows the participants write out the numbers from 1-20. In the older group you will see how there isn't much knowledge of what the numbers look like but in the younger groups, they could easily write out all of the numbers.

I think this article really shows why having language from a young age can be important. The older people in Nicaragua didn't have a sign language to learn from or maybe not even the opportunity to go to school. While the younger generations had NSL developing and had the opportunity to learn with a language they were familiar with.

This is something said in the article that really struck me because it really shows the struggle of Deaf people in different countries.

On all tasks, the hearing participants tended to be the best performers. They had more educational experience than our deaf participants, which may have given them explicit access to strategies like grouping, and more practice with counting, resulting in fewer errors.

Language and the opportunity for education has always been an easy access for hearing people but it could be the completely opposite for some Deaf people.

Nicaraguan Sign Language is an extremely new language. It started in the 1970s from a group of kids who really used home signs and gestures to make it. It spread from a small group to a much larger group after a few years. In this article it tells about how the younger generation had a better understand of NSL than the older generation. It really proved that language does change over time.

Something in this article that really struck me was this line.

The seeds of language are present in individuals, as evidenced by the creation of gestural communication systems by deaf children who are not exposed to a manual language they can acquire.

This article talks about how these children had the desire to communicate and made a language that they could understand. That then lead to many Deaf Nicaraguans using that language.

This new sign language also gives scientist and linguistics the opportunity to study what a new language does to the brain and what it takes to make one.

Scenario 2

Scenario 2: Lets say that you are a Interpreter who is going to a doctors appointment to interpreter for a woman who is from Mexico. You know she knows a little American Sign Language and you're confident going into the appointment. As the appointment goes on you start to not understand the Deaf client. They are using more Mexican Sign Language and gestures than you thought they would and are having a hard time understand what you are signing to them. What would you do in this situation?

A.- Keep going with the appointment and hope that you will be able to get the information across clearly.

B.- Tell them that you would like to bring in a CDI (Certified Deaf Interpreter) that could understand them easier.

C.- Call your agency and ask for a different interpreter all together.

The reason why I enjoy this quote is because if you are without language life could be difficult. Without the opportunity to learn, you are said to be “limited” so without language what are you expected to do or be.

Oralism. Is it good or bad? You choose.

In many Deaf cultures, Oralism is taught in schools. There is a “Language of the Establishment” mind set. What does language of the establishment mean though? Well it means that is the language of the person who has power. So in schools that only taught the Oral method, speaking was what people in power used.

In many Oralism schools, Deaf children were prohibited from signing and were encouraged to use their voice, even if they couldn’t produce one yet. Most schools had a strict no signing rule. These schools aren't just found in America but actually all over the world. One of the New Zealand articles posted from earlier explains their Oralism schools.

These schools can hindered a Deaf community because it is stopping the spread of sign and replacing it with speaking. This could lead to the child’s Deaf culture to diminish.

So what do you think about Oralism schools? Should they still be a thing or should children have an opportunity to learn sign?

Here I show you the difference between American Sign Language and Mexican Sign Language. Part of the Hispanic alphabet has extra letters like the (rr and ll) which are present in their sign alphabet.

How Sign Language around the world could be deemed “unsafe.”

Languages change over time just like technology. When cochlear implants were first introduced they were extremely boxy but now they are more suitable for us. They are sleek instead of boxy. With that said, some sign languages are diminishing as more and more people get cochlears. Everyone has their own opinions on cochlears but I wanted to show some evidence to the above statement.

During 2011-2013 the Language Vitality and Endangerment questionnaire ,which collaborated with the World Federation of the Deaf, was answered by 15 different Sign Languages. There is a scale of 0-5. 0 being extinct and 5 being safe. Out of all 15 Sign Languages, none were deemed “safe”. 3 were critically endangered while only 5 were the level of 4 being unsafe/vulnerable.

Countries with even a definite recognition such as New Zealand weren’t marked as “safe.”

Here is an opportunity to learn NZSL for free. This language worked hard for many years to become an official language of New Zealand and in 2006 under the NZSL Act it finally came true.

New Zealand Sign Language Facts

1: New Zealand sign actually uses Maori terminology and meaning in their signs. New Zealand is rich in culture and tries to incorporate the two. Also just like any language, signs all over New Zealand might look different because of accents, dialects, and the place.

2: NZSL was introduced in 1995 and has been used since but didn’t become an official language until 2006 under the NZSL Act

3: Its part of a family called BANZSL which includes- British , Australian and New Zealand sign.

A huge concern in developing countries is poverty. Poverty can lead to many things but in this case it can lead to a life without language.

If someone is living in poverty most of the time they don’t or didn’t have access to school. They could of dropped out to get a job or in some countries not even have the opportunity for school because of their Deafness.

This article goes on the explain many different types of sign and how the country plays a role in the language. Many Deaf people who are in poverty are usually stuck in their family home their whole life and only learn home signs. I find this article extremely interesting about how in depth it goes to explain topics.
