Phainon’s unwillingness to let Mydei go needs to be studied in a lab. In any other cycle Phainon was in, he was sad when the companion who made it to the end with him left, but he understood. But when Mydei was the last one standing with him? Phainon *begged* him to stay and witness the Era Nova with him. When Phainon had to kill the other Chrysos Heirs he was cold, feeling himself drift further away from humanity. When he had to kill Mydei he was tender, filled with sorrow and regret. Losing Mydei still hurt after all that time. Despite it all, his heart was never truly hardened to it.

Their relationship is so deep, I swear it reminds me of enkidu and gilgamesh or patrochillies. On a surface level, mydei and PHAINON are really amiable and close friends. On a deeper level, phainon and mydei see right through each other, understand each other, and don’t have anyone else like them besides each other in their lives. Phainon also sees mydei as a perfect and amazing person and compares himself to him a lot, but Mydei always tries to encourage Phainon so he might recognise his own amazingness. Mydei and phainon share a deep love for fighting and proving themselves to each other, it helps them also distract and escape the pain of the flame chase and trauma they experienced in their lives. On an even deeper level, Mydei was probably the only person who kept phainon/Khaslana feeling human. Killing mydei was so different from killing other chrysos heirs, and the memories of Mydei and how he was to phainon is probably one of the only comforting things in his lifetime, one of the only things that keep him human or feeling human at least. I’m obviously a biased shipper and maybe I’m not the most accurate and maybe this is how I see them together, but like phainon and mydei have such a special relationship I can’t help but feel like mydei keeps phainon feeling human despite everything he went through and mydei enjoys phainons presence, sees him as an equal and rival to him, and doesn’t want him to always feel down or depressed. They find peace easily in each others eyes.

Tangent over and possible mischaracterisation may have occurred and yes I’m crashing out due to 3.4 I have low tolerance for tragedies and I have unfortunately smelled the flower of tragedy
