“You look good, Aspen,” Tobias said and smiled, nodding his head at her while rubbing his hands together. She really did. She looked healthy; he loved how her cheeks were glowing and how her skin looked as if she was finally in a place where she could be happy. “Perfect. That sounds great. I want a chicken sandwich,” he said and his stomach growled at the thought. Shaking his head, a chuckle left his lips as he tried to think of what else he’d want to have along with it. Glancing over at Aspen as she answered his question, he let his hand drop from the back of his neck and into the pocket of his jeans. “But… What?” he said and looked at her with raised brows as the two of them entered the cafe. “Me?” he said, as they walked towards a seat for the pair of them, “Uh… I’ve met a girl. Haven. She’s— She’s really sweet. But, right now, we’re— I don’t really know what we are.”
The compliment fed to her made her cheeks darken in color, a sheepish smile curving at her lips as her gaze fell to the ground where her feet met the pavement in small strides. “Thank you.” Aspen didn’t look like she’d hoped, but the thought that she was on her way to a healthy lifestyle made her hopeful it would get better. “Remember when we were little and your mom used to make us chicken fingers and they were coated in those delicious crumbs?” the brunette sighed pleasantly at the memory. She’d dip them deep into a sauce bowl full of tomato ketchup so they’d be coated in it. “I guess it just never worked out. I know they all cared about me, but they weren’t ready for a relationship or didn’t like me romantically. I thought there was going to be a good guy, but.. I don’t know. He just left and I haven’t heard from him since.” by the smile that spread on his lips, Aspen assumed that Haven was really lovely and that Tobias really liked her. “I’m glad you’ve found someone. I’d love to meet her sometime.”
gabriel--wolfe:
“I like the way that sounds.”
“You do?”
kylearcher:
“And you promise to stick around?”
“I promise.”
You could never disappoint me, Tobi. Tobias smiled and swallowed the lump in his throat. She wouldn’t say that if she knew what he had been talking to the doctors and psychologists about. No one would ever understand though; hell, not even the doctors did. They told him, repeatedly, that if the cancer were to come back, that he had to fight. But, what people forget, that when you have or have had cancer, you’re constantly fighting. It doesn’t stop. He smiled and nodded, looking at Aspen who said he should come by more. “Yeah,” he said and nodded as he looked at the girl as the two of them continued down the street, and when she gestured to a coffee house, asking if he wanted to get something to eat, Tobias nodded. “Food sounds good. I haven’t eaten anything in a couple of hours, so I probably should,” he said and laughed softly as he moved his hand to his neck, rubbing it softly as he looked at his feet. “So, tell me; what’s been up with you lately? Found yourself a boyfriend yet? Or do I need to beat someone’s ass, because I would do it.”
Aspen was somewhat proud of herself. Yes, she was still that insecure little girl who constantly put herself down and who had forced her food from her body, but she had made her way at least half way down the path of recovery. It was obvious that she’d put on more weight; you could see it in the way her cheeks glowed and the way her old clothes fit her better as she developed once again in the right places. She’d gotten some of her appetite back, trying to feed herself compliments like ‘good job! you ate half a sandwich!’ or ‘i didn’t force myself to throw up today!’. It was those small accomplishments that made her healing process easier. “Me, too. I could really use a coffee and a chicken and salad sandwich.” she couldn’t help but notice the way his hand combed over the back of his neck, making her smile at the habitual act he’d had for a long time now. Some things never change. “Me? Oh, no. I mean -- there have been guys, but...” she shuffled into the cafe surprisingly awkwardly, finding a seat for the pair. “What about you?”
“ Hater.”
“I’ve got no problem with it.”
“Aw, you’re sweet Aspen. Do you have a boyfriend?”
“Boyfriend? No-- I guess not.”
I’ve missed you. It was as if she had heard what he had been thinking. He turned slightly and looked at the brunette. “I’ve — I’ve missed you too, monkey.” Tobias smiled and nodded, looking down at their hands, in which neither of them had released the other. Looking at Aspen, Tobias took a deep breath and looked directly at her. You’re going to make it through this. I know you will. No doubts about it. Tobias laughed and shook his head. “Thank you for having that kind of of faith in me. Hopefully I won’t disappoint too much.” Tobias had promised himself that if he got sick a third time, he wouldn’t put his parents through the same pain again. He had spoken to the doctors, and the reason why he was still going to counselling, was because he had said that if he got sick the third time, he wouldn’t fight. He couldn’t do that to his family. Not again.
A smile lit up her features when he called her monkey, a small jingle of laughter sliding past her lips as his face brightened as well. “I always will. No matter what. You could never disappoint me, Tobi.” Aspen had lived majority of her childhood beside him and she was so thankful to have had him. He was the only friend she’d had, the only friend she’d needed. “You should come by more often -- or I could come to yours. Or both.” she chimed, before gesturing to a coffee house a little down the street. “Want to get something to eat?”
“Yes, she’s the exotic member of the family, clearly.”
“I’m sure she’s as lovely as you.”
aspenmxnroe:
He seemed shocked by her question, glancing upwards at him due to the way his voice changed. “Is is that much of a shock?” Aspen missed Tobias, missed having their sleepovers and how she’d always surprise him with pancakes or egg and bacon for breakfast just to see the familiar smile on his face. “I believe you. One day this is all going to be a distant memory.”
“No.” He spoke a little too quickly. “It’s— It’s not that, I just… I don’t know why I seemed surprised, or shocked, I guess I just was.” He shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck furiously. He missed hanging out like they used to - how whenever they were around each other, Tobias could play video games and Aspen wouldn’t mind. They’d stay over night and when he woke up, she would have made him pancakes or egg and bacon. Their friendship had been one of a kind. And still was, to a certain extent. I’ve missed you; he thought but didn’t say it out loud for some reason. “Yeah. Let’s— Let’s hope it will be. I’m tired of being constantly sick.”
Amusement flared in her gaze only slightly at his quick response. She hadn’t released his hand yet, enjoying the comfort that came from the contact. “I’ve missed you.” her words were clear and soft, warmth seeping from her heart and hopefully to his. Aspen gave his fingers a light squeeze, unsure where the sudden uncertainty and surprise had come from but wanting to reassure it as best she could. “Hey,” stopping in her tracks, she gently urged the other brunette to look directly at her. “You’re going to make it through this. I know you will. No doubts about it.”
“I sure hope so. Ah, the baby huh? Just like Xanthe. Actually, she’d probably love you. What do you do?”
“Is that your sisters name? It’s lovely.”
“ About the big little kid?”
“Yes, about that.”
Can I… Do you mind if I come with you? Tobias swallowed and looked at Aspen. “You— You wanna come with me to the hospital?” he said and cleared his throat as his voice cracked. They used to, and still is, to a certain extent, be so close. They had been inseparable and their parents had always thought that, whenever one of them was somewhere, the other wasn’t too far away. Smiling gently at Aspen, he nodded. “Yeah, I mean, if you want. It’s not—- It’s going to be fine though. I’m not going to be sick. I— I can’t be. I feel fine.”
“I-I can’t.”
“Kyle... It’s okay. You can tell me anything.”

“I can only imagine. It must be horrible. I’m so sorry, Aspen, I— If I had known, I–” Tobias shook his head and sighed. If he had seen anyone he cared about, Aspen for that matter, laying in the hospital like that - the mere thought made him feel sick to his stomach. He swallowed and nodded. “I think we all think that way of people we love, you know? That they’re so strong and that nothing can hurt them.” Tobias swallowed and shrugged. “Then something like that happens, and you’re suddenly reminded that they’re not. They’re far from invincible.” Tobias smiled weakly. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m fine. Aspen, they didn’t find anything. I’m— I’m going back in, in about a month or so, to take some more tests just to make sure but I’m as healthy as I can be. Promise.” If he got sick again, he wouldn’t know if he would actually be able to tell Aspen. She’d been there through everything and he didn’t know if he could put her through it again.
“It’s okay, Tobi.” Aspen looked upwards at him, reassurance guiding her gaze and her hand quickly found his. Squeezing it tenderly, she listened to his words. Really listened. He was right, undeniably. But it was different when it came from Riley to Tobias. She had always known he was ill, but he kept on going through it. He was so strong, that she did think he was invincible. She couldn’t wait for the day where he was cancer clear once and for all. “Can I... do you mind if I come with you?” she remembered the days where she didn’t even need to ask -- the pair had been inseparable, their parents always assuming that the other would be tagging along for the ride. Even when he stayed in hospital, she was at his side, holding his hand until she was pulled away.
“Oh, of course. My Mom is pretty much a full time volunteer these days, she says she’s never felt so fulfilled. I don’t get a lot of time, unfortunately. But thank you for inviting me.”
“I do, I have a younger sister and then an older brother. I’m the icky middle child. What about you?”
“I can imagine how she feels. It’s my pleasure. You’re always welcome here. They love it when people come along. There’s no such thing as a yucky middle child -- especially because it’s impossible for someone as beautiful as you to be one. I have an older brother and sister. I’m the youngest.”
