La ley del deseo (1987)
dir. pedro almodóvar
Charlotte Salomon died in the gas chambers at Auschwitz while pregnant at 26. Before she left on the train, she handed her portfolio titled Life? Or Theatre? to her doctor and told them to be careful with it because it contained her whole life. This is a remarkable series of a young Jewish woman’s short life and the phases she went through-from falling in love-to her mothers death-to living in fascist Natzi Germany. (April 16, 1917 – October 10, 1943, Auschwitz-Birkenau)
The American Friend (1977)
SUBLIME CINEMA #431 - THE AMERICAN FRIEND
Wim Wenders did the first Ripley’s Game adaptation; the second, and perhaps superior Malkovich version is more true to the novel, this one taking place in Hamburg instead of France - but it’s a wonderful early Wenders, showing his visual flair that developed so sublimely over his career. The late great Robby Muller photographed Dennis Hopper better than anybody else ever has. The cinematography here is just gorgeous, and timeless.
