being STARED at is something noh is used to --- but isn’t something he takes very kindly. “ i’m not from here, no. “ he responds in a clipped tone. the idea of being studied, how benign that may be, grates on him as well. studying could EASILY turn into being bound to a lab table while various scientists prodded at your insides, seeing what makes you tick. “ ------ if you don’t mean to stare, then don’t do it. “

i feel like them being A Thing probably started out as some kind of joke? like. a weird game of gay chicken or some shit. tommy, testing physical boundaries out of curiosity; noh, pushing back. they go back and forth like that for a while, and it’s super tense and a little awkward because they’re feeling each other out while simultaneously pretending there’s absolutely no interest whatsoever.
most of what they do together is argue. a lot of it’s joking, but some of it is them just. genuinely agitating the absolute shit out of each other. there’s tons of similarities between the two of them, but their personalities also clash a lot, which means a lot of arguing and butting heads over stupid shit.
i also feel like there’s some level of codependency between the two of them? mostly because they Get each other in ways that most people wouldn’t, and that’s not something that you can come by easily. so for all their relationships faults (because lbr it’s….. really not the healthiest relationship there is) and for how much they dislike each other, they still look to each other for comfort and stability, consciously or not.

the tension hanging in the air between the two of them has been thicker than normal lately, as it usually is after their mutually inflicted meltdowns. lots of things said that weren’t really meant ( okay, maybe they did hold some truth, but still ), which always led to radio silence on both ends for a few days until they’d essentially forgotten what they were mad about to begin with.
it probably wasn’t the healthiest of processes, but ‘ talking things out ‘ wasn’t something either of them were comfortable with. ‘ talking things out ‘ meant acknowledging there was a reason for them to talk — the implications that there was something between them worth salvaging that went beyond just annoying the absolute shit out of each other, and. well. that was another thing neither of them were comfortable with ( those things are for normal people, neither of them is normal, they would never be normal, so why bother going through the motions? ).
so, all things considered, to say noh was surprised when he felt a pair of arms snaking their way around his shoulders while he was working would be somewhat of an understatement. he tenses under the touch, jaw clenching, fully anticipating some sort of choke hold and running through about a hundred different ways he could snap tommy’s neck before the boy could even blink.
but then he feels tommy’s face press against the crook of his neck, a soft exhale against his skin, and noh thinks there’s a slight chance he misread the tone of this whole situation. “ is there something wrong? “ he asks quietly, to no response. noh hadn’t expected one anyways. a hand is lifted to cover one of tommy’s, gives it a gentle squeeze. he knows — they both know — there’s a lot being said with both gestures.
