help.
After being freed from their theses, the mage trio still hang out in Magnificus’ tower. Goobert’s still formally apprenticed since he hasn’t given up on Magnificus and the Scrybe’s been getting better about their treatment, but Pike and Lone are just there for the room and board, the books, and the companionship. It’s also the best place to practice magic, although, uh, accidents do happen!
Do you think all the mini bosses interact between them? Like, the archivist and the mycologists maybe could be friends, the archivist giving cards to the mycologists, and the mycologists giving the results
G0lly would be so sad to ever give any animal of the internet to the trapper and the trader and see them killing it
I feel like all the Magnificus pupils and Grimora's skeletons could do very well together too
In canon? Perhaps in the beginning, there was more mingling between the mini-bosses, but I think that after a while, the Scrybes’ growing animosity and competitiveness towards each other created some distance between the inhabitants of each island, like an unspoken rule. The Mycologists “aren’t welcome elsewhere,” P03’s workers are constantly working and its alternate personality matrices are linked to its body, Magnificus’ pupils are stuck in their theses, Grimora’s spirits might be tied to that land, and Leshy’s subordinates seem to mostly keep to themselves.
That being said, I can see a couple of exceptions! We know there’s some competitiveness between the “fishers” of each Scrybe (the Angler, the Dredger, Kaycee, and Goobert), so I think it’d be funny if they had a friendly-rivalry type of relationship. I wonder who’d have the best poker face on game nights? The Trapper/Trader is also found on each corner of the map, so I can see them passing along messages to those who want to keep in touch!
In my post-game au, there’s a lot more mingling as a result of mended relationships. I can totally see G0lly and Lone nearly making a competition of making as many friends as possible, the mage kids and the skeletons throwing some epic gRaveyard parties (with Grimora completely on board), or the Mycologists, Archivist, and Inspector making and cataloguing some intriguing cards.
send me a number (1-100) and a character and I’ll draw them based off of my spotify top playlist
Okay so, since I’m not sure if it’ll ever get fully written, my fic/au idea goes like this:
Act 1 starts off based on @randomgamefan’s excellent Playtester AU, since I’m a sucker for the whole “protagonist gets sucked into media” premise. (In this one, Luke’s an only child after the death of his sister and doesn’t have much contact with his family.) Luke’s computer crashed and G0lly’s upload failed, but one rushed copy did manage to be created on Luke’s computer, a sort of imperfect cut and paste of the original Inscryption; all that remains on the floppy is the OLD_DATA… but that doesn’t mean the copy is free of it. Luke wakes up generally confused, meets the Scrybes, and finds out he’s in the game... or part of him at least, according to Grimora.
(He was never shot. When he viewed the OLD_DATA, he couldn’t eject the floppy in time and it took his mind, leaving his body comatose and crashing the computer. Since he never called the press, Amanda wasn’t alerted for the last resort and she took the disk and his evidence once the house was empty.)
He tries to help out, but what little working relationships the Scrybes had before are completely shot through now, and the damage to the game, a mysterious illness, and other strange occurences aren’t helping matters. Cue some detective work while trying to play peacekeeper, filler slice of life, a massive battle with the source of the illness, and finding out how to get Luke back into the real world. Outside the Scrybes’ knowledge, during the process of getting him home, Luke tries to bring them with him by focusing on all his encounters with them.
Act 2 is where things gets fun and where the idea for this whole thing originated! Luke wakes up from his coma and rushes home once he’s discharged. He finds his house neatly ransacked but empty, until he checks the floppy disk drive and finds four official-looking Inscryption card-game cards depicting a three-legged stoat, a face-marked stinkbug, a one-eyed wolf, and a moss-covered grizzly bear… and they can talk (P03 is so pissed about being a stoat again and it wants everyone to know it; Leshy is living the dream). More than that, they find out that the Scrybes can exit their cards as the beast they’re depicted as during the daytime, and assume their true forms during the night. After fixing the computer, the rest of the game’s characters can all still be interacted with and use the floppy drive to interact with the real world (though with a time limit).
I call it the Roommate AU! This part is basically funny slice of life, small conflicts, and relationship building, while also setting up the pieces for Act 3. Including but not limited to:
- Trying to keep a frequently-wandering Leshy out of sight of the neighbors before they call animal control
- Stoat-P03 using a Roomba as transportation
- Luke waking up to find Grimora holding a seance in his living room and immediately going back to bed
- Decorating Magnificus like a Christmas tree
- Found family and the requisite angst and comfort that comes with it
Act 3 is where everything comes together for one last big conflict that requires all that built-up trust and teamwork to overcome. The details of said conflict are still up in the air, but would likely include GameFuna really coming after Luke after one too many close calls rather than being the looming but indulgent threat from the previous act, making a true Inscryption game using all of the Scrybes’ expertise, and other things.
There we go! I’m currently writing some bits and pieces, but for now it’s just ideas. I’ll probably post some drawings/snippets if people are interested. Feel free to ask me about it!
you wanna talk abt inscryption? who’s ur favorite of the scrybes, fave mechanic in the game… and what’s that fic you mentioned gonna be about? :o
I would love to talk about Inscryption!! Many thoughts, head full.
Choosing a favorite is hard, they’ve all got such interesting designs and motivations! ...I do have a type though, and that type is screen-faced robot jerks, so P03 comes in first, with Funky Forest Man and Cool Corpse Grandma coming in at a close second.
For mechanics... I think the totem mechanic was pretty neat! I never got the option of the unkillable sigil, but I‘m a firm believer in Stinky Squirrel Supremacy. It’s an interesting power-up for the fodder cards, or for another tribe of cards in your deck if you so choose. P03 takes this to the extreme in his campaign, of course, and you can get some insanely good sigil combos. I forget the third one, but I definitely had sentry and spikes on mine.
As for the fic! Not sure if I’ll get around to publishing anything, since I’ve still got another fic actively in the works, but I’ve basically got it all outlined. (I am forever cursed with long and involved and plot-heavy fic ideas and limited motivation,,,) I’ll still post a short summary about it separately, and I’ll likely post art and scene doodles/snippets regarding it if people think it’s interesting!
Guess who fell head over heels for a certain horror card game?? Man, you know the brainrot’s bad when you’ve already got a three-act longfic planned out in your head huh.
I have many more Ideas but for now I’m on a kick for funky little wizards, so here’s my designs for ‘em! I gave them all neat little outfits because they deserve it ✨

So I’ve been thinking about Unn.
She’s going to be playing a very important role in LiM, after all, and there’s really not much lore about her. So I thought, what if while she was fading in strength, her form was fading also? What if she used to be more decorated, mossy like the Mosskin, but when she lost focus and started to fade, all her adornments became vulnerable to the acid she swims in? I liked the idea of that kind of creation myth, where the Mosskin were formed from her moss as they stepped out from her Dream.
So yeah! Sea serpent slug Unn! Moss grandma deserves a pretty coat. The thorns are mostly for decoration and to mimic the spires on top of the building at the Lake, since she rarely gets angry and dislikes battle, but when she does get pissed off, you’re in for a world of agony.
If it's not too personal, can I ask why you disappeared for half a year? You're not required to give us updates— neither on the fic nor about your situation— but you disappeared off the face of the earth for a while, and I was getting slightly worried.
Ah, I appreciate the concern! It’s no trouble to answer, but thank you for the courtesy.
To answer your question, half of it is this: time management has been an oft-battled foe for me for a long time.
I’m getting better, but it’s very easy for me to lose track of time when it feels like that thing I did a month ago was yesterday. Add writer’s/artist’s block and forgetfulness into the equation and the time delays can get pretty long, not to mention my habit of doing lots of often-unnecessary research to try and make sure that certain topics in my writing make sense.
For example, for one section of the newest LiM chapter, I spent several hours in a rabbit hole of ranks and hierarchies for the right titles for royalty, the possible equivalent position of the Watcher, and how the sentry system in Hallownest might be organized if I ever make explicit reference to it. I’m a little bit of a perfectionist, so sometimes it takes me a bit before I realize that it’s way past due and to just let it be.
The other half, which is related to the other, is that I sort of fell for the creative-in-a-pandemic trap of setting myself up with too many projects at once and burning out on all of them.
I did a lot of pre-planning for several different projects, both HK-related and not, but when it came to putting them all into motion I found myself exhausted after a few weeks. Among these are a side-blog, LiM, at least three animations, and a third vine compilation... and those are only the Hollow Knight-related ones! I also had to dedicate the majority of my energy to my creative coursework, especially my senior project animation, so lots of things fell to the wayside.
But! Now that I’ve graduated, I‘ve been spending much more time figuring out different schedules for the various projects I have in mind (a much shorter list this time) around the other things I have to do. Among these is Life in Miniature, for which I’ve planned out the next arc and started writing some buffer chapters to minimize future delays. It won’t be every week, unfortunately, since I can’t keep up with that comfortably while also looking for jobs and updating other things, but I’m going to try and make sure it doesn’t go for longer than a month or two at a time.
So yeah! There’re other factors, of course, but this is the gist. Thanks again to you and all the other readers for sticking with me! Please, don’t hesitate to leave comments and send asks about LiM, things I’ve got in the works, and other stuff, it helps keep me focused and I love getting some of the worldbuilding out of my hefty Google Doc lol. I’ll be posting more here too, so keep an eye out!
