Post and Beam Dwelling Revisited

Chamfer House revisits a post and beam dwelling designed in 1977 by Kevin Borland. It sits within an established garden overlooking Port Phillip Bay in Victoria, Australia.

The clients approached Mihaly Slocombe Architects soon after moving in. They wanted to protect the timber structure and ceilings they loved, while also updating the house to suit their young family. Our design is a sensitive restoration and renovation that touches every room yet retains the house’s core personality. We unkinked the plan, pulled back a touch on the 1970s psychedelics, and reconfigured the living and sleeping areas to better connect with the garden.

Hello! In a few of your recent posts, I saw some very eye-catching pieces of furniture, and I was wondering if architects were responsible for(?) or had a say in how a room was furnished. Also, do you have any favorite pieces of furniture in terms of look/style?

It depends on the project and the team. Many institutional (healthcare, education, culture, civic) clients want the architect involved when choosing the furniture either by actively preparing the furniture package or by being consulted on it. On the flip side, residential, retail and corporate clients tend to have their own team or preference.

Favorite pieces of furniture? What about some of my favorite chairs?
