Above The Crowd, Below The Lights is an ongoing webcomic by Matthew Cosgrove and Charlie Champion about the burgeoning love story between Kristian, front man of theatrical metal band Voyd, and Nor, front man for theatrical rock band Oxy. The story is based on a shared love of music, theater, art and middle aged people falling in love.

inspo anan- I was sure ghost would be on that list lol. do you guys know sleep token? they also do the whole anonymous members (wayyyy moreso than ghost by this point) and lore shtick :-) their music isn't for everybody, but it blends a lot of genres from album to album and even song to song

this comic makes me so happy, as a Big time fan of theatric bands. this concept is so awesome!!!! what's been shown so far of the costumes is so awesome!!!!!! i am hooooooked ❤️❤️❤️ were any specific musical (or other) artists inspiration for the concept/designs/etc???? sorry if it's been asked before >_<
Charlie: I'm so glad you're enjoying it! As you will see with a later character, costuming is super important in this story, especially to Voyd who have an anonymous band. Visually, Voyd takes a lot of inspiration from groups like Ghost and GWAR (though less extreme in one case and more extreme in the other). They were also heavily inspired by David Bowie and 80s punk fashion. Also Cats a little bit. There's some Cats in there. As for Oxy, their costuming is slightly less elaborate than Voyd's eldritch monsters, but they have a bit of a medical gimmick as well. They were more inspired by bands like My Chemical Romance and Evanescence, with elements of grunge and punk as well. You're more likely to see Nor on stage in a t shirt than Kris. I will say that when it comes to costume design, I really have to hand the visual kudos to Matt. I give him ideas, but he really pulls most of the weight there.
Matt: Thank you! Glad you’re liking it so far. We took a lot of inspiration from bands like My Chemical Romance, Ghost, Metallica, Evanescence, etc. but wanted to extrapolate from those styles than just copy pasting. Charlie had a lot of lore ideas for Voyd with space and eldritch horror elements that I tried incorporating into the stage and costume designs (which y’all will see more of next chapter) tbh I looked at artists from the 70s like David Bowie and Cher, so lots of flared sleeves and spacey patterns. For Oxy they have more of a schlocky grungy vibe, so I would pull up Trent Reznor circa 90s Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie during the Hellbilly era, even a little of Lady Gaga’s costuming as well as movies like Repo! The Generic Opera
