Mythology AU: one of the characters is a god, condemned to be alone and immortal forever, and the others are servants, royalty, and priests, who are more upset about the fact that they won't meet their immortal friend in the afterlife than they are about actually dying.

Canon divergence where the incredibly irrelevant minor character – whether it's the school bully who never reappeared after fifteen minutes, the cashier at the 7-Eleven or the student at the back of the class – turns out to have incredibly important information.

A character meet a version of one of their friends from an alternate universe, and can't help but think that they're wildly different.

College AU, but two characters have been transferred to a university abroad and are forced to be roommates since neither of them have anywhere to go.

The main character accepts the villain's offer to go evil. Their OG-universe self finds out, and has to travel back in time to fix their alternate selves' actions.

The standard high-school AU... except they characters are the opposite tropes you would imagine them to be. The quiet character is the suave popular kid, the extroverted character is a lonely geek who talks too much and the calm character is the unfriendly trouble kid.
