“What’s wrong?” His eyes are sharp, tracing over you like he can deduce every secret you’ve ever had just by looking at you. And knowing him, he probably can.
“What do you mean?” You try to ask innocently, leaning forward to run your fingers across his shoulders and through the hair at the nape of his neck.
Your distraction doesn’t work. If anything, his frown deepens.
“What’s going on?” He stares you down and you falter. Something must show on your face because his brows furrow and his hands reach for you. When one slides up your back and across your shoulder blade, you flinch.

Tears well up unbidden in your eyes, and you fluster at the burning in your waterline. Your head shakes, frustration with yourself bubbling up. “You weren’t supposed to find out!”
That makes things worse. Now, his face turns dark and he’s reaching for you again, sliding off the couch to stand and look at your back.
“Did someone hurt you?”
“No!” You turn to stop him from lifting your shirt and seeing your skin, but he flawlessly follows your movement, not allowing you out of his grasp. “No, I promise no one hurt me.”

Rafe is acting weird.
Well, he’s always acting weird. You just know how to read him, so usually you can figure out how he’s feeling even if he’s being… well, Rafe.
But right now? You have no idea what’s going on. You can’t identify any immediate threats, and unlike before, you know if something was happening, Rafe would talk to John B and John B would tell Sarah who would absolutely tell you. You wouldn’t be in the dark, following him around blindly without a care in the world.
Except, that’s exactly how you feel. Like suddenly someone has drawn a cloth over your eyes and covered your ears. Rafe makes no sense to you.
He’s… jumpy. Since when does Rafe jump when you call out his name? Like he’d been deep in thought and you’d yanked him out of it painfully. He tries to act like everything is normal, which is maybe the worst part, because you can see through that but not deep enough to see what’s really going on in his mind.
“Do you think Rafe is acting weird?” You finally ask Sarah one day while the two of you are standing in the kitchen. Everyone else had gone out on a supply run together, leaving just you and Sarah behind to keep watch.
Sarah licks chocolate pudding off of her spoon and sets it down. She shrugs, but there’s a strange purse to her lips. “I don’t know.” She says, blinking at you. “Not really.”
“Really?” You ask, a bit skeptical as you lick chocolate off of your own spoon. “You haven’t noticed anything?”
“No.” It comes out a little too quickly, a little too pointedly. “Not at all.” She’s quiet for another moment before she abruptly stands. “I have to go uh… find something for John B. I forgot.”
She’s out of the room before you can even blink.
Things don’t get better. In fact, when everyone comes back from the supply run, things get much worse.
Now everyone seems jumpy. Though not necessarily around you, but around Rafe, which almost makes you more nervous. He hardly talks to you while you help him unload supplies into the medicine cabinet. He gives you a short nod when you ask if they ran into any zombies, and then a half-shrug when you ask how long it will be before the next run.
You spiral, because of course you do. You and Rafe have been solid since you found him, but it wasn’t so long ago that you felt as though you’d never be abandoned by him only to find yourself opposite the angriest glare you’d ever seen. What if you’d done something to make him angry, and now he didn’t want to be with you? Or worse, what if something had happened to him and no one had told you?
You ask him more random, unimportant questions, only to get the same not-quite-verbal answers. You stop talking then, and unpack silently. He doesn’t try to continue the conversation, and you try not to throw up.
Dinner isn’t much different. It can sometimes be a lively affair, especially when John B and JJ break into Ward’s old bottles of Jack Daniels, but tonight it feels more like a funeral. You think that feels fitting.
Rafe grinds his teeth. It’s quiet enough that you can hear him grinding his teeth. You keep your eyes down on your bowl of soup. You didn’t think you could stomach much else.
“I’m going to bed.” You finally say, setting the bowl aside and standing from your chair. You make a point not to look at any of them as you do, quickly making a break for the door. “Goodnight.”
“Wait,” Rafe’s voice makes your steps stumble, but you don’t stop, and you don’t look back. “I’ll come with you.”
Your heart sinks and you continue to walk, internally pleading with yourself not to cry. “Okay.”
He doesn’t say anything until the two of you step into your shared room, and you sit on the edge of your side of the bed. Rafe stands at the foot of it with his hands in his pockets, shaking his head slightly like he’s trying to figure out what he wants to say. Your throat tightens. The two of you had fucked on these sheets just a few nights ago and yet now you don’t know what to feel.
“Did something happen?” You ask, hating how pathetic you sound as you curl yourself around a pillow. That catches his attention, evidently, because his eyes finally rise to meet yours. His lips purse, his eyebrows furrow, and you continue, fists curled into the soft fluff of the pillow, “I just thought… I don’t now, everyone seems… nervous. Especially you.”
Rafe curses under his breath, one hand leaving his pocket to run through his hair. His eyes dart around the room before he seems to settle, jaw clenched, and sits by you on the bed. You watch him with weary eyes, still awaiting a response.
“Nothing happened.” He says, his hand now reaching to hold your own. The feeling of his palm against yours instantly settles you, a weight dropping from your shoulders. “Everyone else is nervous because of me.”
“Why?” You ask, leaning more into his side, and he takes a long breath. He stares at your fingers for a long time, long enough that you open your mouth to question him again, but you stop when he turns your hand palm down, fingers separating your own. You watch as his other hand leaves his pocket, his fingers unclench, and suddenly they’re sliding a band onto your ring finger.

“No!” You turn to stop him from lifting your shirt and seeing your skin, but he flawlessly follows your movement, not allowing you out of his grasp. “No, I promise no one hurt me.”

You sigh, your shoulders dropping in defeat. Your wring your hands in front of you and Brendon stops, looking at you and allowing you to answer in your own time.
“I got something for you.” You finally admit, voice smaller than it should be. “But… I didn’t want to show you until it was ready.”
“You… got me something that’s on your back?”
You nod, and reach down to lift your shirt, turning your back toward him again. There, right on the back of your shoulder, is a new tattoo, still covered with the clear wrap from the tattoo shop.
The design is of two sharks: a nurse shark for you, and a great white for him. Still swollen with freshly injected ink.
“Honey…” The pet name is enough to have your eyes burning again, and you bite your lip in anticipation of him saying more.
When he doesn’t, you ask shakily, “Well, do you like it?”
He pulls your shirt down gently over the wrap before his hands move to cup your cheeks. He places a long kiss to your lips, and by the end of it, you’re smiling.
“I love it.” He tells you, and there’s a soft tenderness in his eyes that always makes your stomach flutter. You lean forward to kiss him again, and his hands slide into your hair to pull you closer, kissing you harder. He pulls away first, and you press your forehead to his, the tips of your noses bumping.
“I love it.” He repeats, and then, “I love you.”
“I love you too, Bren.”
He smiles for just a moment before shaking his head, pulling back and meeting your gaze. “You were going to try and hide it until it was healed?”
You shy, giving a slow nod, “I was going to try. You figured me out in less than three hours…”
He scoffs, pulling you to lean against him again, but careful of your shoulder.
“What?” You ask at his scoff. He gives you a side eye.
“Did you really think I’d be able to keep my hands off of you until it healed?”

You really didn’t think this through.
It had sounded like a great idea at the time, and really, you still think it’s a great idea. It’s just… the hiding it that’s not working out.
And Brendon sniffs it out instantly. You should’ve known he would.
“What’s wrong?” His eyes are sharp, tracing over you like he can deduce every secret you’ve ever had just by looking at you. And knowing him, he probably can.
“What do you mean?” You try to ask innocently, leaning forward to run your fingers across his shoulders and through the hair at the nape of his neck.
Your distraction doesn’t work. If anything, his frown deepens.
“What’s going on?” He stares you down and you falter. Something must show on your face because his brows furrow and his hands reach for you. When one slides up your back and across your shoulder blade, you flinch.
Brendon pulls back like he’s burned you. The look on his face is hurt and suspicious, and when he speaks again, his voice is far rougher than normal, each syllable drawn out. “What’s wrong?”
Tears well up unbidden in your eyes, and you fluster at the burning in your waterline. Your head shakes, frustration with yourself bubbling up. “You weren’t supposed to find out!”
That makes things worse. Now, his face turns dark and he’s reaching for you again, sliding off the couch to stand and look at your back.
