“It means they’re losing hope.”

“Since when is not reining in your kids an indication of lost hope? What are you saying, Renée?” Auda looked at Renée. She felt her temper begin to rise. Why? She was never like this, she never felt like this. She squeezed her hands into fists and released them, taking a deep breath. She looked back at Renée and her face softened. 

“I’m sorry. That was weird.”

“Sure thing.” Verina replied with a slight smile, thinking that Auda was lucky that she wasn’t doing this job for the money. She filled a glass with water and a couple of ice cubes before sliding it over across the bar. “So you’re new around here or just now finding time to explore?” she asked curiously. 

“Just exploring. Thought it worthwhile to enjoy all of the town, you know?” Auda pulled the glass of water nearer to herself and held it between her palms. The ice clinked against the glass. Auda liked the sound. “Do you know of any obscure spots that are worthwhile to visit?”

“It’s slow for now,” Verina said, wiping down the bar absentmindedly. She was guessing that Auda might need someone to talk to if she was just wandering around town without a goal. 

“We’re not the cheapest bar in town, but we keep it classy.” she added, hoping Auda would stay and talk if she wanted to.

“Yeah. Yeah, it’s pretty decent in here. It’s a lot warmer than outside.” Auda smiled shyly. It occurred to her how ridiculous she must seem, sitting at a bar with no intentions of ordering anything. She hesitated, biting her nails. “Actually...could I have some water?”

“Fuck, I don’t fucking know. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s fucking frustrating. I’m sort of living with one of my charges. And then, I’m also kind of living with … three other people. Sort of. It’s complicated.”

“Sounds like it. Why so many people?”

“But they weren’t even that young. They could have just as easily asked one of their friends to take off her shirt.” They shook their head. “I just wonder how they got in without anyone noticing.”

“Couldn’t have had anything to do with you. Parents need to supervise their children. I’m surprised those kids weren’t being watched given everything that’s been happening.”

“No. I mean, it bruised a little I think, but I was fine.”

“Good to hear. You must’ve been pretty brave.”

“A morgue? Is that exciting?”

“I wouldn’t call it exciting. The morgue is full of cold, stiff bodies. It’s just standard procedures day in, day out.”

“I’m Sam, by the way.”

“Auda. It’s nice to meet you, Sam.” Smiling, she reached out to shake his hand.

“I just walked on it and my foot slipped.”

“Well, it’s a good thing you didn’t get stuck. That’s a tight spot. Did it hurt you?”

“Yeah,” he said, almost laughing. “Yeah, they can.”

“I’m sorry that you understand that feeling.”

When Auda came in, Renée sat up straighter and looked away from the book they were reading. It was a newer one, and lacking in character development, and Renée was glad for an excuse to put it down. Smiling, they watched Auda settle at the foot of their bed, and studied her for a bit, before she spoke. Auda’s words made Renée smile a little, just at the predictability of the sentiment. “Mm, not particularly random. I did have to prevent a group of about seven children from walking in on a breast exam, not sure what they thought they were doing there.”

Auda laughed out loud. “They probably thought they were being completely hilarious. ‘Guess what I saw yesterday?! A real, live boob.’”

Auda raised her eyebrows. “Not at all. I work in a morgue. If anything, I’d be the one finding all of this boring. Or, at least, I wouldn’t find it to be extraordinary.”

Verina was mildly surprised that anyone coming into Juicy Lucy’s wouldn’t want a drink of some kind. 

“Well, I’ve been working all day.” she replied, wondering if this person made a habit of telling every service worker they came across that they looked tired. She knew she was probably more on edge than normal, so she tried to keep her tone neutral. “The bar isn’t really the best seat if you came to watch.” she added, gesturing towards the stage. 

“Oh. Right.” Auda glanced at the stage indifferently. “I didn’t really come here for anything in particular, actually. Just wandering around the town, thought I’d see what it was like in here. I don’t want to waste your time, though.” She looked down at her hands and began to run her right thumb over the nail of her left middle finger, a somewhat unconscious habit she’d picked up to help her cope with not knowing what to say.

“How’s that going for you? Where’s your friend?”

“It’s going just fine. I expect they’re at work or something right now. We live out near the woods. It’s very peaceful. How have you been doing?”

“You can’t, I suppose. But I still did. More fool me. I just want someone to care. That doesn’t seem like it’s asking too much.”

“Not at all. It’s never too much to ask for basic respect. Look, I doubt I’ll be able to change anything, but do you want me to see what I can do?”

Auda pushed open the door to Renée’s room, finding them there as she expected and feeling the subtle irritation of the past few hours at the morgue melt off of her. She sat on the edge of their bed, looking at her hands. Sighing, she looked up at Renée.

“I hope you weren’t as inundated with random, distracting visitors as I was today.”
