DJ Paul - Underground Vol 17 for da Summa
Three Six Mafia legend is back with yet another album and this time he is paying homage to his debut solo album, the 1994 "Underground Vol. 16 For Da Summa". Listen to it here. Its scary how over 20 years later the sound is still relevant and DJ Paul can still capture the essence of Memphis in a contemporary way. He has some expected features on the album like Lord Infamous (RIP), Lil Wyte, Layzie Bone, Lil Jon on the album with him but it was refreshing to see Dave East, Jon Connor, Yelawolf and Riff Raff to get on the project. From the production to the classic outro, this sound will always be a staple in the rap lexicon. DJ Paul is a pioneer and a true legend. This latest piece of work has solidified his greatness in my book. Stream the album below, keep it on shuffle.

A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - The Bigger Artist
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie has blessed us with his debut album , The Bigger Artist and its a strong project. The song that caught my ear a few months ago was Drowning, Featuring Kodak Black and since then he has been on my radar. This album is good. Its versatile and doesn't really have lulls. The Trey Songs, Chris Brown and Robin Thick features gave his album a different dimension that was refreshing. "Undefeated" featuring 21 Savage slaps as well. I got a feeling a few more hits will grace the radio and A Boogie might be a new artist that will be here to stay. His project feels mature. Check out visuals below and go get his new album. Keep it on shuffle.
Cornerboy P - The Corner Store Mixtape
Cornerboy P one of my favorite artist lately has a new project I cant get enough of. His last project The Art of Finessin did the same thing to me. I don't know if its the jet life vibes or his effortless flow, but its infectious. He hit home with an Anita Baker sample on "Hella Girls", and his visuals always slap. Check out the videos below and look up the project - its everywhere.
Nore and Pharell got a hit. More importantly, how long will this island vibe gonna be relevant?
WifiFuneral - Boy Who Cried Wolf
Ok, first of all, if you haven't heard of the young Florida rapper, WifiFuneral watch this interview with him and Rosenburg below. The song that caught my ear from him is here.
Now that you are acquainted, Wifisfuneral is a new artist that is on my radar and his new project, Boy Who Cried Wolf has dropped and it is impressive. His sound on this project feels familiar and production wise I could not help but get Three Six Mafia / Hypnotize Minds influences. Bars/Rap wise he has some serious Lil Wyte influences especially on the intro track Tic Tac. Production is done by Cris Dinero and its simply a great project. I think wifisfuneral is one of the best artist in the new school. Keep it on shuffle.
On Radar: Brian Brown - Desires. Love this vibe.
On Radar: SwaVay - Quicktrip . Love this track, check out SwaVay, he got the juice.
In The Mix - Don Trip: Free Roy, Free Fletch
Don Trip, one of my favorite artist put together an EP that is in my rotation right now. Its just 7 tracks but it packs a punch. The first track Puzzle Pieces is the epitome of what Don Trip is capable of, its 2:40 of bars. No hooks. No adlibs. Just Don Trip rippin’ over a dope beat. If you are not familiar with Don Trip, search for his older projects as well, he will impress. First track off the project is below. Add this to ya mix. Keep it on shuffle.
In The Mix: A$AP Ferg - Still Striving
A$AP Ferg is my favorite A$AP Mob member for many reasons. His music is one but another is his work ethic and consistency. He dropped his best work last year Always Strive and Prosper. I loved it, its creative and a very well rounded body of work. I liked it so much I copped a vinyl of it, here. Now a little over a year later, he drops another full body of work entitled Still Striving. I stop defining projects as albums or mix-tapes because the distinction is becoming more and more blended but this project feels more like a traditional mix-tape composition wise. There is no narrative for the project like a mix-tape, which is unlike the other A$AP Ferg projects but it is all original production and just 14 tracks like an album. Regardless, its jammin. The production is aggressive and something you add to ya “Friday night before the club” mix. From track 1 to 14, it doesn't stop and this time Ferg had alot of help, there is a big feature on every track! Ferg invited Meek Mill, Cam’Ron, Dave East, Lil Yachty, NAV, Famous Dex, Playboi Carti, Migos, A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti, Rich The Kid, Famous Dex and MadeinTYO to the party. Then to top it off he did a remix to one of his biggest tracks entitled East Coast and did posse style with Busta Rhymes, A$AP Rocky, Dave East, French Montana, Rick Ross and the OG, Snoop Dogg. Its really a fun project and its refreshing to get some more light hearted, freely expressive tracks from A$AP Ferg. The remix to that East Coast track video is below. Keep it on shuffle.
A$AP Mob - Cozy Tapes Vol. 2 Too Cozy
A$AP Mob dropped their second installment of the Cozy Tapes, the first one dropped last year and was very successful featuring the hit “Yamborghini High” which I bumped entirely too much. Round two of the Cozy Tapes might be even better.
Rap groups, camps, posse’s, clicks, collectives work for me. From No Limit mix-tapes, D12 albums, Three Six Mafia posse songs to D4L debut album, I love when its 8 artists on a fuego beat. I think a good rap group breeds competition and also pushes creativity. A$AP Mob anchored by A$AP Rocky have alot of other artists in the camp that can spit. On this platform they really shine, I’m definitely a Smooky MarGiella fan now. What’s more exciting about the project is the production. Making a track that 6 artists agree upon is hard and a lot of the times these songs don’t have one direction/emotion, so the beat has to be dope and often times the track changes to adapt to what the next rapper wants to do with it. It seems like the song takes on a new form every time A$AP Ferg gets on it. I love Ferg for that. With that said, here is the production list for the project.
On top of the entire A$AP Mob it is truly a collaborative effort, features include: Gucci Mane, Jaden Smith, Playboi Carti, Key, Smooky Margielaa, Lil Yachty, Schoolboy Q, Big Sean, Zombie Juice, Nyck Caution, Meechy Darko, Zack, Quavo, Lil Uzi Vert and even Frank Ocean. Some how all of them fit in seamlessly. Cozy Tapes is fun and one of the most exciting projects that dropped this year. Twelvy has his first solo project out now and Ferg dropped his new project Still Striving last week. With rumors that A$AP Rocky is next up, the Mobb might kill 2017. One of my favorite tracks from the project are below. Keep it on shuffle.
In The Mix: PeeWee Longway - The Blue M&M 3
I cant stop spinnin this mixtape, Pee Wee got another hit with ReRocc, Video for it below, and the full project is available here. Keep it on shuffle.
MadeinTYO: True's World
MadeinTYO has hit us with his 3rd official project entitled True's World which is named after his son True which he and his fiancé had earlier this year. With his rise in 2016 with the smash hit Uber Everywhere, MadeinTYO has come back with more radio hits. Along with the summer festival tours I have seen him slated on and the cosign from 2chainz, I got a feeling he is here to stay. Check out the EP below. Keep it on shuffle.
Action Bronson: Blue Chips 7000
Action Bronson has hit us with his 4th project. It feels like an extension of Mr. Wonderful which dropped back in 2015. The production is incredible. All done by his usual production friends, Harry Fraud, Party Supplies and The Alchemist, the vibe is retro. Think early 70's jazz club in Miami meets NY hip hop scene circa '92, its truly a vision. My favorite track is "The Chairman's Intent" - video below, where Bronson has added some ques from Wutang, incorporating old Kung Fu influences with hip hop tracks:
His creativity and his worldliness is what keeps me intrigued. Over the last 2 years Action has been all over the world and you can tell in his music. His references are getting more and more extravagant and he is painting pictures of his lifestyle as well as he describes how Foie Gras tastes off the coast of Saint Malo on his very popular show, F*ck That's Delicious . He gets outside of his self on one track called "Let Me Breathe", but brings it right back with a combo that rivals the croissant and the donut, a feature with Rick Ross entitled 9-24-7000. The combo is over due, they have to more projects together. Cheers to action on a great project. Full album here. Keep it on shuffle.
XXXTentacion
XXXTentacion has been on my radar since his Look At Me! track caught my ear back in May. Its not often a single track like that gets my attention but after hearing it once you will understand why I couldn't turn away. After that debut track I dug into his first project Revenge and immediately saw his range. Take a listen to one of my favorite tracks he has done, entitle "Looking For a Star" . The man simply has talent/passion and has a lot of things he wants to express in many different ways.
Consequently, since his debut, he has been all over blogs and media outlets for his antics. I wasn't surprised by any of the headlines surrounding the new artist simply because the music he is creating is so volatile/violent and his youth. I know, the rap world is not a place that isn't used to violence in their records but there was something different coming from X's music. A certain grunge, depth of darkness that has never been expressed well in the rap/hip-hop world. Some how he has found it, it was raw in his debut project in May but it seems in a few months he has honed it in for his debut album which is simply 11 songs all under 3 mins (22 mins total) entitled 17.
At the young age of 19 XXX Tentacion is handling topics like depression, suicide, forgiveness and obsession. The raw expression is what I like the most and it results in a product that has no rules. It doesn't feel like a rap/hip hop album, its closer to RnB in my opinion but there are strains of Emo/Alternative metal that keep it unique. Production is the same, mostly piano and acoustic guitar, rarely an 808 or a cliché high hat which works some how. The music is truly like no other and that's what is so exciting about XXXTentacion. He is one of a kind, I just hope he keeps creating. Listen to the album here. Keep it on shuffle.
Lil Uzi Vert - Luv Is Rage 2
After a controversial release date, Luv Is Rage 2 is here. Luv Is Rage 1 was Uzi's first project back in 2015 but this is his 4th official project. My favorite project of his was Lil Uzi Vert vs. The World just because of its quick listen ability and creativity. He has captured that creativity/innovation in this album that's so refreshing and I attribute it to the production. Luv Is Rage 2 feels cohesive but there are 8 producers across the 16 tracks, majority is done by Don Cannon who Uzi is conveniently signed too. To be able to capture creativity and cohesion across an entire project is impressive and a testament to Uzi's team. My favorite track (I cant decide) might be "Pretty Mami" or “No Sleep Leak” or it is "Feelings Mutual" - Its classic Uzi track, emotional with inspired lyrics over a wavy track produced by the very talented Wondagurl.
Uzi does get outside of predictive psychedelic melodies on one track entitled "For Real" where he spitting more bars over a crazy DJ Plugg/Bobby Kritical beat. Uzi also linked up with Pharell this project that is a very exciting collaboration. It fits into the album but I think the duo would benefit even more from a full project (6-10 tracks). In the interview below Uzi mentions he worked on alot of tracks with Pharell. Listen to it here. The project only has one other feature, and that is with The Weekend. I think my expectations weren't met with this collaboration. The track is fine, but the hook is painfully one dimensional. I was ironically "UnFased" . Overall though the project is dope, congrats to Lil Uzi Vert and the team, definitely going to have this in rotation for a while. Whole album can stream below. Keep it on shuffle.
Check out his interview with Zane Lowe as well:
