Final Final Proposal: WHERE THE CHOICES DONâT MATTER
So, still doing a visual novel, but this time Iâm going to focus on one aspect of my life and itâs how Iâm in the hell known as chorus battles which is an online singing competition for groups. Itâs going to be about me, how I get into these things, the process of getting into it, the during process of the competition, and also the resulting product from all of this work.
As I said before, thereâs going to be choices, but theyâll be more like dummy/extra choices, should the player choose the wrong choice(the choice I wouldnât have made) then it will just lead to a âNah, this isnât rightâ or even a âpredicting scenarioâ of what would happen and how it would fail, thus the player is then forced into the route of the correct/my choice.
I donât think this game documenting my life should be too long, so I think there will only be give choices in all? The first choice will be whether or not to join this chorus battle, or CB for short. The second choice will be about who to recruit. The third choice will be whether or not to even continue. The fourth choice will be about getting involved into a certain scuffle. The fifth and final choice will be about whether or not to watch the final product. As stated previously, the player doesnât actually get to really choose because theyâll always be forced onto the path of my life. These choices are subject to change in type but the number will stay the same.
I will mostly reuse the sprites that kaitlyn made for my previous visual novel work to save time to represent me throughout the visual novel. For when it is appropriate the background may change to things relating to the story of this cb hell. And then after all the choices have been made, the visual novel will end with an actual entry created by my group that will be encoded into the visual novel. This game will either be partially or not voice acted at all due to the amount of programming that will be required for this extensive project.
The program I will be using is TyranoBuilder.
Final Project Proposal Self
After some deliberation about what my selfie could be as well as what would be the most creative and I can only think about falling back into visual novels, but this time instead of a kinetic novel(the one where you just read) this one will have actual choices.
Unfortunately, I donât think thereâs enough time to really flesh it out and have the choices represent actual values but they can at least represent âroutesâ in which the player can learn more about the parts of my life that make me âmeâ. There are three aspects that I really want to depict within my visual novel and they WERE what would have been depicted in my video over break if twitter hadnât been so dumb.
Anyway after some prologue/dialogue from me I will present three choices onto the player, Singing, Voice Acting, and Cosplaying. Each one will depict different parts of my life about how it started, how I got interested, how I got into it, how Iâm doing in it, what I plan to do with it in the future, and etc.
Also at the end of Singing and Voice Acting will be an actual video coded into the video game that depicts one of my works from that aspect of my life, for the Cosplaying one Iâm not too sure but probably just a series of photos from my cosplay album.
Chinese International Student Interview by: Drew DâAndrea
Levi Xu- Freshman International Student Interview
How was your experience growing up in China?
âI spent my middle school years living in a boarding school. Â I liked it a lot because in that school I met my best friends. Â They made me feel really happy, even though my grades lowered because of it. Â I wasnât nervous about getting into a good high school, because i was confident in myself. Â One of my friends had a villa nearby the boarding school. Only on the weekends could you leave the school. Â We used t go to his house and play on the weekends.â
What did you have to do to get into high school?
âUnlike the US, in China, we had to take an entrance exam to get into high school. Â I prepared for the exam for three years beforehand. Â The exam was hard, and you get ranked based on your grade. Â If you are really talented academically you can go to a honors high school. Â I went to a normal high school. Â In high school we had to choose a certain direction to take, such as science or art.â
Was your social life similar to middle school? Or different?
âI didnât make new friends in high school, i just stayed with the friends i made in middle school. Â I regret not meeting people in high school.â
How did you decide to come to America?
âmy parents thought it would be a good idea to go to college in America. Â I learned english for one year in china, and then I started college in New Jersey. Â I donât have any family in America, except for one aunt that my family does not know very well. Â I had to learn a lot of things about American society while being here.â
Do you miss your family back home?
âOf course i miss them, and think about them a lot. Â I talk to my parents on the phone every week. Â I do not feel really homesick, though mainly because I am so busy with everything at a school. Â Making new friends also makes me feel a sense of belongingâ
Was it hard to get used to living here?
Except for the fact that english is the main language, many things were surprisingly easy to get used to. Â Except for the language difference, America is not that much different to when i was living in China. Â Being on my own in a different country was scary at first, but i got used to everything pretty quickly. Â It is hard however to be away from my friends from school. Â I was very close with them, and being in a new place, and not knowing anyone, was hard at first. Â But once i started meeting new people in my dorm, and joining clubs, i found people that i got along with, which makes being here a lot betterâ
Is there a main difference between China and America?
âGetting used to english was very hard. Â I still have trouble with it now. Â I know english pretty well, but if people speak very quickly, or use big words, then i get confused. Â I also notice that meals are different. Â The portions in America are much larger, and in china, everyone shares meals with each other.â
Do you plan on living here in America, or going back to China?
âI think it would be best to stay here in America, but i feel that it will be harder to find a job here, because of my difficulty with english. Â This summer i plan on returning to China and be with my family. Â I know that i will stay at Rutgers for at least four years.â
This was a really insightful interview about a Chinese international student especially since their education is vastly different than ours. It was very interesting to know about the life before and after of a Chinese student. However, this was a really bland presentation if only because of itâs simplicity. Itâs not bad in itself, however when compared to the stylistic choices of other interviews as well as what weâve learned thus far, perhaps maybe a few images, static or gif, would have added more to this? Unless it would have actually distracted from the questions and answers, then I totally understand. I think at the very least it would have been nice to have seen a photo of both interviewer and interviewee to feel a bit more connected to this.
JUST READ
âCall me a nerd or a geek, but connecting vivid imagery with exciting stories helped an introverted kid like myself dive into different universes. Itâs something that really changed my life.â -Liam Panero
Graphic novels and comic book series are a staple in the hearts of the young and old across the country; they offer a sort of addicting balance between nostalgia and excitement for the future that no other concept can replicate. However, for Liam Panero comic books arenât just a cherished childhood memory. These publications gave him something more, which was the ability to transform a once painful experience into a beautiful love.Â
JULIA :Â âI really wanted to talk about the topic of books because to me, they are sort of a gateway to another world. Theyâre magical and I grew up constantly reading, so books ultimately let me escape some of the things that went on in my life.Â
But for you, Liam, Iâve learned that it seems to be the opposite. Textual books act as a sort of anxiety for you, and words themselves are not friendly. However graphic novels, or comic books, seem to combine the world of text and illustrations in order to help you experience the storytelling magic. So, can you please explain what provokes these anxieties toward linear text and how graphic novels have become this childhood gem that really helped your comprehension.â
LIAM : âI am dyslexic. In the 3rd grade I was taken out of schools for tutoring, I had those experiences. But at the end of the day, those sessions just taught me tricks and shortcuts to help me deal with my disability.
It isnât something that just goes away. My anxieties towards books isnât just nervousness, I literally get migraines from looking at words in that format. Reading a paragraph was painful, it was so hard to focus and read lines. I associate textual books with pain.Â
My dad instinctively got me into comic books, which was more of an excitement for him because he grew up with the original Superman and Batman series. No one really understands how important these books are for someone like me. Call me a nerd or a geek, but connecting vivid imagery with exciting stories that helped such an introverted kid like myself dive into different universes, is something that really changed my life.
JULIA : So did you find that the visual illustrations graphic novels offer allowed you to comprehend the captions and dialogue better?
LIAM : Absolutely. I find that the images, which are done by incredible artists that need more recognition, sort of served as a usable door to the comic world. Just like how you imagine the places you read about in text, I get that through beautiful and ultimately cool illustration.Â
âReally before I knew it, I started to read book after book..â
JULIA : Do you remember the first comic book you read?Â
LIAM :Â If Iâm going to be honest, I really donât. The way I got into these Marvel and D.C. worlds was through the movies, they intrigued me as a kid. So, after seeing those films I wanted to learn more about their stories. Really before I knew it, I started reading book after book, so much so that I canât even remember my first.
âComics helped me cope at the time with my disabilityâŠBut, the most important thing that comes out of that is soon I may get to bring them to life.â
JULIA :Â In your opinion, did âraising yourself on comics,â rather than traditional text, inspire your career? I look at you and I see someone who was shaped by graphic novels, is this assumption true?
LIAM : Comics acted as a sort of gateway to storytelling. I couldnât learn the traditional, or academic, way, but imagery really allowed me to immerse myself in stories. My dad always told me that it was okay that I couldnât read books or novels, as long as I understood the story. It was the story that mattered. My career path is producing, but I study integrated digital media and film at NYU. Currently, I am working on producing a short film called âWhat Here Needs Loveâ with my best friend, which will hopefully get admitted to Sundance or any other film festivals next year. To me producing is the gateway to movies, just like how comics are the gateway to text. They donât directly relate, but thereâs a joy in applying my passion for storytelling with the knowledge I learned from comics.
From my past, I learned how vital stories were. Just like text allows for you to create worlds and spark imagination, graphic novels really allow me to dive into places and have that same experience. With reading Iâll always be a step behind, and Iâll always try to improve that.
Simply, comics helped me cope at the time with my disability. Theyâre a modern myth that need more attention. But, the most important thing that comes out of that is soon I may get to bring them to life.
_______________________________________________________________________
Books, much like people, come in all shapes and sizes. It isnât just the standard text version that launches intellectual validation. No reader should feel inferior because they cannot finish a 500 page novel in week or less, nor should one feel superior for being able to do so. Storytelling sheds its light on multiple spectrums, for it graces the minds of its audience with open arms and zero judgements. Whether it is the words or graphic illustrations that provoke the imagination, the true goal of authors, graphic or textual, is simple: to tell their stories and hope to touch those who read them.Â
Despite this being a text only(excluding the usage of images) interview, I absolutely love this. The text formats are different to emphasize certain points and aspects and the fact that you made sure to list the names of the interviewer and interviewee really made this personal and lovely. I liked reading about this because it was interesting and insightful. If there was anything I was to be critical about, I suppose it would be if there had been more time, would you have considered in making this into an actual sort of comic interview? Maybe not full blown drawings, but even just simple stick figures to really hone in on that graphic novel feel. At points I felt there was too many walls of text which goes against the interviewee but for the most part this was good.
Interview
I interviewed my friend who transferred from Rutgers Newark to see how he likes the transition and how his life is going overall.
Question 1: Â Thanks for letting me Interview you Kieran. Could you start off by telling me a little bit about yourself and maybe why you wanted to transfer to Rutgers New Brunswick?
Answer: Well, I went to high school at JFK and I played soccer there, I realized I was good enough to play at the college level so when I got an offer from Rutgers-Newark I decided to take it. My first year at college went terribly. To start off, I tore my ACL the second practice we had, that was a major blow to me because essentially the only reason I came to Rutgers-Newark was for soccer and that was taken away from me. Not being able to play caused a severe break in the relationship between me and the head coach, we argued on a lot of things and I decided to leave the team. Not playing soccer took a lot from me because I wasnât really enjoying the social scene and just overall wasnât having a good time. My brother went to Rutgers New Brunswick and told me that it was a lot of fun and that heâd help me get into his frat. I knew from there that both for academics and to have a good time New Brunswick was the place for me.
Question: What would you say is your favorite part of New Brunswick so far?
Answer: Well aside from the girls, Iâve made a lot of new friends and I really enjoy the variety of things there are to do here. My injury healed up so I can play club soccer now.
Question: So what would you say the biggest difference is between Rutgers Newark and Rutgers New Brunswick?
Answer: Definitely the size, the New Brunswick campus looks at least five times bigger than the entire Newark campus so it was a little difficult to get around at first but Iâm used to it now.
Question: What is your least favorite thing about Rutgers New Brunswick?
Answer: The food is definitely my least favorite thing here. Iâm already sick of it and the only other food options besides the dining halls are all unhealthy so it sucks.
Question: The last question Iâd like to ask is if you could do it all over again, would you still come to New Brunswick?
Answer: 100% Iâd do it again because Rutgers New Brunswick is a great time and there is almost always something fun to do.
Thank you for your time
I think this was a very short and sweet interview, I donât think it was too short due to the length of the responses as well as the usage of gifs/pictures which definitely distracted/added to the length, so thatâs a good point. The interviewee also seemed to have a bit of humor to him which made things a little more interesting. If I were to critique this however, it did feel a bit bland. The questions were okay, but maybe the overall format of how this interview was presented? I might just be picky, but it might have also been nice to have like a sort of picture depicting both interviewer and interviewee so we really get a sense of who is asking and answering these questions.
CW Interview in Three Languages
(A/N: My computer crashed and i lost my files for the project so I wasnât able to update it but at least i was still able to record it with a screen capture software, if youâd like to play it there are dl links in a previous post!)
This is the interview I did with my boyfriend, Oskar Westin. He lives in Sweden and is currently visiting me now. Heâs half-Finnish but only grew up being born into the Swedish language, he learned English because itâs a global language, and he learned Japanese because he wanted to! This is an interview in all three languages with various questions for each. (I even try speaking all of them...)

Interview Proposal
For my interview, I want to have a discussion with my sister. Â She is currently a freshman on the Montclair State University Womenâs soccer team. Â While she was in high school, she tore her ACL as a Junior. This was difficult for her because she had several division 1 schools interested in offering her scholarships prior to her injury. Â By the time she returned for her senior year, much of this interest had waned, as coaches were unable to offer a player with a major injury a position on their team. Â
While she no longer had interest from division 1 teams, several lower profile schools still had interest in her. She eventually decided that she was going to play soccer for Montclair State which is a division 3 team.
During a game this fall, she tore her other ACL and she is currently rehabbing to come back and play for the upcoming season.
The main topic of the interview will be discussing her rehab process and her decision to continue to play soccer. Â Rehabbing from an ACL tear is a major process. Â There is also very little external motivation to continue playing soccer at the division 3 level. Â She is receiving no financial compensation or scholarships for playing soccer for the University. Â I want to explore what makes her want to continue to play soccer despite her second major injury and the lack of motivation to continue to play the game.
Considering that we are at different schools at the moment, the interview may be difficult to conduct in person. Â It is more likely that this interview will be conducted via phone, skype, or email. Â Iâd like to present it in a way that is visually stimulating. Â While I am not familiar with many video editing applications, Iâd like to look into video animation applications to present my interview.Â
I really think that your idea for your proposal is very well thought out and a good choice, not many people would have the opportunity to interview someone who had a chance for scholarships for something they love and then lose it because of something they didnât have much control over. In fact, this kind of story where they continued to do this sport because they love it and even tore up their other ACL but still want to play is something youâd probably watch as a documentary on an actual life-changing sports channel or something(I donât watch many sports, Iâm sorry). As we spoke, you did seem really unsure about how you want to execute this. Like I said thereâs either a way to record a skype conversation through third-party recorders, or like you said you might do it on a google hangout. I donât know if it would work in your situation but you could always maybe do the interview like over a soccer video game if you happen to have FIFA or something? There are a lot of channels on youtube that nowadays have decided to just talk over gameplay(theyâre normally new reporting channels though). Or make a really appealing video I suppose, or even just make a college of important quotes from the interview or ones that really struck you. Though it depends on what you feel more comfortable with, technology or handicrafts.
Interview Proposal
For my interview, Iâm thinking of interviewing my boyfriend(yeah cliche, easy, or so you would think) who is visiting all the way from Sweden. But itâs not about the long distance that I want to interview him on(because I mean Iâm going through it too), nor is it really whatâs going on in Sweden that I want to ask him about either. Rather, I want to ask him about being multi-lingual. He currently knows 3 languages, Swedish, English, and Japanese. So I want to interview him about how it feels to learn three languages because of 1) being born into the language, 2) having to learn the language in order to communicate with a majority of the world, and 3) learning a language for personal interest.
If possible, I would like to do this interview in all three languages(with proper English translations) though Iâm not sure if I should also speak in Swedish and Japanese(Iâm also trying to learn both myself).
But for the interview itself I would like to do it in kinetic novel format if there is enough time, which means a visual storybook of sorts, I plan to commission a fellow classmate for artwork that would represent myself and the interviewee in the novel. As well as input audio/voice acting in the kinetic novel so that everyone can hear the languages instead of just reading.
Response to Ocean Vuong Conference
We started off with how poetry came into his life and he feels that he was already introduced in his motherâs womb because she would always sing. That poetry is deeply interwoven in the mundane acts of life and I really feel that. Itâs like how everything can be art, so everything around us can be poetry. He also said that poetry and speech were always side-by-side so it seems natural but that meaning and written word came very late, however poetry was always there.
I really liked how he thought of memories that memories are by images and then sounds. It really is through visuals that people most remember something so Iâm happy to hear that he felt the same way. Itâs really interesting to hear how he has memories of his Vietnamese culture when he lived in a tiny village and then in kindergarten he was thrust into a whole new culture. And that he got yelled at when he dragged his hands across the walls because he loved to feel things. But because he didnât quite understand why he was being yelled at and why he might be in trouble, he continued doing things and inadvertently became a bad kid. However, he felt more connected through touch but when faced with the language of English something seemed blocked off and he didnât really know what was happening. He would see the mouths move but not grasp the meaning. Also had a nice little laugh about how he couldnât do the Pledge of Allegiance back then and he doesnât think he can do it now.
Apparently there is a tradition in the Vuong family of learning disabilities, they learn that they are inept at learning but itâs really like dyslexia and such. This comes from how information in his ancestry came through a lot of uncommon ways.
Itâs interesting to hear his process of overcoming his disability by slowly going through every word, every letter, and how everything would slowly materialize. Again his sense of imagery is prevalent in this process as he breaks the words apart to make something visual and solid in his own mind.
âI want to throw upâ said his brother who had a worse case of dyslexia when walking into a bookstore, I never thought about this before how disorienting it might be to have words and letters jumble up until now. It sounds a lot more painful than I could imagine and Ocean Vuong seems to have gotten the lighter side of it.
He spoke about how poetry felt very safe, that his words felt safe in them and that the community of poets are working through these poems.Â
I really like how he talks about poetry and how he talks about how to express what you see without naming it. It felt really refreshing because it is not something that I have heard before nor something that I particularly thought of before myself as someone who had written poetry as well.Â
Pfft, had another laugh when he used a picture of his mother and aunt for one of his books but the titles covered their faces and his mother was like but why and he was like itâs artsy, and she was like ok whatever. I always love it when these speakers are comfortable and casual because it makes the atmosphere less restricting and makes me more intrigued by the stories they have to tell and the person themselves.
Itâs also really interesting to hear how at family gatherings people will come up to him to say âhey wanna write about a real story how about thisâ and he likes this because he feels that through him they become mini-authors and find the importance of their life when they might not have felt as such previously.
Similar to the previous writer we went to hear,, he was also nervous about grasping the reality about himself being a writer. But you know, he did it, and at first he was nervous about who was watching and listening but eventually those worries faded away. I personally think thatâs a good step forward, not everyone can keep going without being crushed by pressure and he made it.Â
âThis is important to me and I can only hope that this is important to someone else.â
He tells as story of how someone doesnât go into something looking for something they know for the sake of collecting but rather they go in looking for something they do not know to understand more. Which is really interesting, because usually you would go in looking for something specific, something familiar, but by looking for the different and strange, you can be brought into new heights, new sights into the world.
Someone asked him if his writing changed once he knew that more people were writing but heâs not sure which I think is a pretty honest answer and understandable. How can you really know if youâve changed or if youâre the same after certain events?Â
As it is with most writers, he feels that writing is such a refuge and I can also really understand that. It is always nice to have a creative outlet to express your feelings and thoughts, not particularly to or for anyone else, but just for yourself.
âThis is a question I think we should all ask ourselves, not just artists. For myself, I think love at is itâs best has the change to appease itself, and replicate itself, and a sense of familiarity, this culture has ecstasy as love, but love is best when itâs dependable, and mundane, and just there. It embodies an infusion of everything you do rather than just a pinnacle of the day and to him thatâs the most valuable form of love. Love with a capital L. Love is something that has durability and something you have to upkeep. In his shorter life then love is something you could just obtain or have or give and take but itâs something you make and itâs hard work. Love is an architecture that can encompass more and contain us and be durable and be a norm. Not a pinnacle and a moment but normal.â - a bunch of paraphrasing of what he said when answering my question of âWhat is love to you, what is your ideal form of love?â
I really like how he answered my question honestly, because even if I had never thought of it this way I think I can understand and I think I can also desire such a thing. Love is usually spoken as a rare moment of happiness but it really would be nice if it ânormal.âÂ
His family was proud of him and called him a scholar and scholars were quite rare back in Vietnam. And I think thatâs something common in a few Asian countries, when the child becomes smarter than the parents they feel so proud of them being involved in academia or such.
âI never thought Iâd see all these white people crying for my sonâ - his mom crying at one of his events and asked why. It seems funny but it does have a powerful connotation on how she spends a lot of time working on the nails of white people and kneeling before them but here there are white people clapping for her son, he is the one being praised and mentally being kneel-ed to in a way which makes her so proud and surprised.Â
His writing has slowed down due to him making money by giving readings and speeches but he doesnât mind it, he rather likes it because doing this is part of his writing process. All of the normal and mundane and ordinary routine things he does are also part of his poetry.Â
Music is helpful in his artistic mind too which is not too surprising. The beats of a track invoke something in him, and heâs still trying to figure out what the music he is interested in mean to him and how it affects him. âItâs pain hammered out in song. So I think thatâs the first inkling of poetry for me.â - more paraphrasing.
âIâm very suspicious of the word âwriterâs blockâ and how itâs constructed by capitalistic society.â - paraphrasing, but I agree actually. that it shouldnât matter how much you write and produce but because of this society to have nothing means being lazy to which writerâs become ashamed of when they just have nothing to say. Thus, him feeling if he has nothing to say then he wonât say anything is sort of a tiny resistance and I really like that. It feels like an important thing to know that no one really thinks of.
To wrap everything up, Ocean Vuong is an intriguing young mind and I really like his ideas and thought processes as well as the way he feels about certain things such as Love and poetry and languages as a kid. I honestly feel that he is a lot more interesting to me than the previous speaker, I donât know if it is his personality, the way he speaks, or maybe just simply because I feel more connected to him as an Asian. I think Iâll try to keep up with his works from now on and I really hope he continues to rise in success but more importantly that he can become even happier than he is now. Along with grasping a mundane love.
Questions for Ocean Vuong
Does your name happen to have influence in the subject matters you write about, like for example in âSomeday Iâll Love Ocean Vuongâ okay obviously your name is involved, but I mean how the subject includes looking far beyond the horizon, looking forward into the future, is this a reference to how the ocean seems boundless and does indeed look like it stretches into the horizon?
What is your idea of an âideal loveâ because the aspects of love in âHome Wreckerâ intrigue me so I just wanted to know how you feel about both platonic, familial, and romantic love and how you differentiate them?
Probably the most random question, but do you like walks and would you choose a park or beach-side? Does fresh air help you think more about your poems and what theyâre about or do you find creativity indoors with yourself or others?
Turn Frustration Upside Down!(or at least try to salvage your old ideas)
Film Proposal
I thought about what I could do for my film and a few ideas came here and there until I found one that I really wanted to stick to. I just want to be simple but also sporadic. I plan to document my life and the things around my life, whether it be the happenings of the world around me physically or the world within the internet. See, most of my life has been spent stuck to a computer, rather my laptop(regardless of how shitty my current one is) is practically my best medium for the world outside. I don't like going outside, so my clips might not have many outdoor settings, but there are plenty of things to see indoors, whether it be through the screen of my laptop or even the activities I can do outside of it. Basically what I am to do is show the life of an almost NEET(Not in Employment, Education, or Training basically) person.
The things I will be showing from this world are probably me stressing both in person and in text about a few of the things I do. Some people seem to think if youâre not doing something out in the âReal worldâ youâre not doing actual work, but my hobbies and work through digital means is very time-consuming and stressful. Iâm going to be showing off the 2(and sort of a half) chorus battles(singing competitions online in large groups) that I am organizing(in charge of) how I attempt to regulate their work and how the final products are always full of relief because the process is full of stress. There might be a few clips where I sing(perfectly or with so many mistakes I get frustrated, anything can happen in 15 seconds).
I also do voice acting, which I might show as well. Â Voice acting is my job actually and itâs mostly done(for me since Iâm not a professional) through the internet, I have to make connections, record my stuff, audition for things, just like everyone else but I can do it through a computer and not in person. It requires just as much, if not more work than acting so I wonât anyone try to put it down. Besides the stuff on the computer though, I also do things such as cosplaying(itâs a shortened form of costume play) and in fact getting ready to plan for a few travels to certain conventions. It can really drain your money though, either by buying premade(which I do because my hands arenât that good) or by buying materials to make your own. The whole video will be done without showing my face until the very end to show that who I am isnât just the identity of my face but also through the things I involve myself with.
Everything is to be done through my iPhone camera through twitter video and then uploaded onto YouTube, well all of this WAS the plan until disaster struck. During editing, twitter decided to malfunction and would not tweet out my videos for me to save, then when I let it stay in my drafts for a bit so I could try again at another time, my video was suddenly gone.Â
The first clip of my new video details my frustration, after the first clip I didnât shoot for a while due to the depression and anxiety caused through this madness. However when I finally gained the willpower to continue, I tried to salvage my ideas, remember the good things in my past, and show that as long as you keep trying youâll still get somewhere with something.
I have still used my iPhone camera but for editing(itâs raw footage though) I used Sony Vegas. The reason why all of these clips remain unedited is to preserve the âjump-cutâ style, suddenly being brought to one place to the other, keeping the brain active and forcing it to keep focused on what is happening, what is being said, and what everything means together.Â
Tangerine
The movie that I decided to take a look at was Tangerine and I have to say that it was pretty different than what I normally watch, then again I don't really watch a lot of movies that are recorded on phones. It makes me wonder how much the balance is though between the priorities of having money for cast and extras as well as artistic view because the decision to only record on iPhones is an interesting one. Although it is interesting to note how the film does not really "feel" like in iPhone movie but rather like an actually decently filmed movie, excluding a few parts. There are moments in the film where due to the camera movement and perspective, it felt like someone's personal vlog or just a random recording, so in that case it might be similar to how Cloverfield felt albeit, with a much lower budget and lower equipment specs. However, that in itself is an accomplishment, I never thought iPhone qualities could be so good, maybe it is the brand of iPhone or even just the editor's skill that can do this so masterfully though. I really admire the guys of the actors and the editing skills of the film. However for the most part, the film itself was not really my cup of tea. Not that I am uncomfortable the the subject matter, but more so I am not really pleased by how it was presented. It just felt a lot of unnecessary drama that did not need to happen, then again I am sure that is how life works out as well and in fact, I found myself thinking about how despite how dramatic the film feels for me, I have seen just as or even more dramatic occurrences. In retrospect, perhaps it would be perfect as a sort of Youtube Film type? I feel like I have seem similar dramatic videos on youtube, some with similar or more drastic or simpler content as well. There's just a lot of weird things going on at YouTube really if you just think about it. Anyway back to the topic at hand, the plot didn't really feel like too much of a plot and I didn't feel particularly feel engaged or attached to any of the characters. I guess I felt a little bad for the taxi driver, but I am not overly worried about them. Also, why Christmas Eve, was this a definite major holiday to have a movie about sexworkers and the industry or could this easily have been filmed at any other time? I also did not particularly like the way they presented the LGBT+ community or how they seemed to portray transgender people. There's also that one bit where Sin Dee finds the girl their pimp was cheating on and they beat them up but then they become friends? What is this? Some sort of shounen manga?(To clarify a shounen manga generally features coming of age stories/action stories about young/adolescent males who more often than not make friends out of their enemies after beating them up). Anyway I was not too much of a fan of this movie but it was decent enough.
DeceivingÂ
Nikko & Emmanuel
Unfortunately, I do not know who this figure on the poster is, so it might either be due to my ignorance or because the figure you used is not too widely known? However, I will assume for the most part that whoever this is they really relate to the quote and the message youâre trying to convey. What Iâm understanding is a feeling of patriotism but if the person who is in the image represents the opposite of patriotism, then this would change the meaning entirely to something sarcastic and maybe even mocking. But right now from what I know, it wants people to think about nationalism and be more beneficial to the country.
Chronicles of Cancun
I remember the discussion about this proposal in class and I must say that I do like how this turned out. As mentioned, itâs a parody about how Trump does not want Mexican immigrants coming across the border, but people coming across the border in the other direction is also actually not such a great idea. As depicted it looks like these Americans are just kind of slobs/partiers/not really doing anything beneficial during their visit or even stay. It just looks like a mess(probably even just depicting how we as a country feels like and how we are viewed by other countries). My favorite design choice for this is how it looks like a negative film as if trying to either obscure reality or show that reality is damaged. Iâm not quite sure why the text is so tiny, but it really does make someone look really closely at the piece.
