â A Look Into the Past : From Birth to Present Day.
Audrey had always been a happy child. All bushy-tailed and bright-eyed, splashing in faerie streams and watching in fascination as the sun bled away to the stars and a sky full of wonder. She and her mother resided in the Bronze Mountains, in a small house set into the earth, collecting herbs and growing what they could for food. Anything they couldnât obtain by their own means led them to venture between the lands of the fae in the east and those of the witches in the west until the Black Rotâs progress became too close for comfort.
Not a day ever went by where Audrey did not feel loved, for as long as she could recall, her mother was always there, always protecting and guiding her. The young woman raised her daughter on her own, a father nowhere to be found and not one to be mentioned in the twilight hours of uncertainty to a young girl. She was the strongest person Audrey had ever met. Her mother worked hard to support the two of them, working jobs no one else would to earn a bit of coin for warm blankets and meat in the winter months.Â
A terrible sickness came to their home one winter, gripping her mother in a vice-like grip and refusing to let go even once the weather warmed. It was a simple disease, but it stole her motherâs strength and would leave her bedridden for several years, eating away at the woman Audrey had known all her life. A young woman at the time, she set out to find work, to pay for a physicianâs visit and the medicine he would bring. When the medicine did little to bring her mother back to her, the shifter braved the forests surrounding the mountains in the hope of finding a cure among those living there. She found nothing and after weeks of venturing back and forth, Audrey returned home to hold her mother's hand as she grew weaker with the coming winter, frail and unable to grip her daughter's hand in return.
On the cusp of deathâs door, her mother begged her to take the money sheâd been saving and go to Black Watch to make a contract. Her daughter would be safe within its walls, protected from the Rot by the magic of the city. When her mother breathed her last, it absolutely devastated the young shifter, clinging to the memory of her mother so strong and full of laughter even as she and a few close family friends watched the womanâs ashes float into the night sky. Audrey grieved for as long as she could, blaming herself for not doing enough for her, for not being able to keep her mother safe like she had done for her. It was with a heavy heart that she left the only home sheâd ever known, adventuring out further east than sheâd ever gone to the Black Watch, buying her way into a contract with the Hightown Auction House.
â Just Below the Skin : Aesthetic, Traits, & More.
Soft blankets. Starry night skies. Salty food. A fresh pawprint in the snow. Red fur and a bushy tail shifting into bushy hair and fiery words in a flutter of magic. A soft melody.
âLife is meant to be lived in.â
Audrey has a strength to her that she does not see in herself; a stubborn, fiery spirit that she gets from her mother. She still carries with her that wonder of the world that she had as a child, so intent on exploring every nook and cranny there ever was and ever will be, but more so than that now, she holds a deep respect for the simple things life has to offer. From the glittering light in a stream to the wonderful chirps of new life up in a tree. Living in the mountains gave birth to a young woman with such a bright, passionate energy and wildness to her that is almost endearing. It is from her mother, from her life then that has made her into such a genuine person, perhaps not always with her words, but always in her actions and how she treats people.Â
Ever since she came to the Black Watch, she is almost skittish around strangers, hesitant to offer a name and reluctant to reach for an offered hand. The city is louder than she expected, and perhaps that has something to do with it after living peacefully all her life. As if accounting for the bustle of the crowds, Audrey is quieter in her day to day life, flitting about to do chores with a simple hum but little else, working diligently and quickly. But she canât quite change who she is at the core of herself, unafraid to give in to her own desires and wants, no hesitation in her movements as she impulsively throws herself into the crossfire of an ill-mannered gentleman on the street or takes the blame for something she had no hand in. As if she is atoning for not being able to save her mother. Her loyalty has no obvious bounds; she gives those she trusts everything she has with little expectation for anything in return and even when that trust is broken, she clings to the remnants. For all she has is the memories of what once was and will never be. Thatâs not to say she forgives and forgets. One who crosses a fox and is given a second chance should be wise to not take it for granted for they will not be offered another.Â
