“Oh, it’s all right, Miss.  I am rather relieved; I didn’t have any idea what it was that you were talking about, so I was rather hoping that I was not the one being addressed.”  She gave the blonde woman a small smile and inclined her head.  “I apologize for interrupting your call.”

Henry stood idly in the door way for a few moments, attempting to decide if he should turn back around to leave the slave alone and find another bathroom. He had no intentions of wandering around a strangers house trying to find another bathroom so he simply entered the room and shut the door behind him. Whatever had happened in the room before he had come in was none of his business. He didn’t want to hang around for long so there wasn’t a misunderstanding like he was trying to impose on someone else’s slave. Henry noticed the blood on her hand, but ignored it and went straight into the bathroom.

When he emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, he approached the girl and pulled the handkerchief from the breast pocket of his suit. He offered it to the girl, dangling it in front of her while still keeping a bit of distance between them. “Do you need some kind of medical assistance up here? I don’t know if the House makes house calls, but…”

Aurelia sat on the bed while the stranger went into the bathroom, the wad of toilet paper quickly soaking up the blood coming from her nose.  It wasn’t the best place to be, but she didn’t want to go back out there looking like this.  It was...distasteful.  Bad enough being seen by one person, let alone the entire party.

She held up her hand when he offered the handkerchief and shook her head.  “No thank you, Sir.  I don’t wish to ruin your handkerchief and I...it isn’t as serious as all that.  Nothing is broken.  Just bleeding a lot.”  She folded her tissue again and put it against her nostril.  “My Master said that he doesn’t wish to see me for the rest of tonight, so I have time for it to stop.”

Work had been slow all morning, and Flora was purposefully dragging out her daily tasks in an effort lessen the painfully slow pace of the day. She made herself a coffee and left it in her office, heading off to the bathroom before she carried on with the paperwork on her desk. She stopped as she opened the door, seeing a girl stooped over the sink, blood dripping from her nose. Looked like a bad rental. “That looks nasty, dear. Let me help you.” She slowly approached, not wishing to startle her at all. “How long has it been bleeding for?”

“...About five minutes, Miss,” she replied warily.  The other woman was advancing on her slowly, and while that was better than quick movements it still put Aurelia on edge.  “It should stop soon.  You needn’t bother with me, I will be fine.”  She ran the tap to rinse out the sink and washed her hands for the third time, scraping dry blood from under her fingernails.

“Well yes.. I believe it might be someone’s perfume or cologne. It was very strong and I couldn’t bear to just torture myself by breathing it in any longer.” Again with the sir. He told her his name, why wouldn’t she use it? Was she some kind of worker here? Could that be the reason? It would make sense if it was. But she wasn’t dressed like any of the others. “I don’t feel the need to show off. To anyone. People can just see me as I am. Nothing more, nothing less. Besides.. There are other ways to show off, than to bring arm candy along with me everywhere.” 

“That is a rare quality, Sir.”  No less admirable, but all the same, not the easiest thing to find in this city.  This man -- Anthony -- perplexed her as much as she seemed to perplex him.  Like they were on completely different wavelengths despite exiting in the same space.  “What ‘other ways to show off’ would that be?  Don’t you want to take advantage of the city?”

Anthony shook his head. He just wanted to use the restroom, so he went into the nearest establishment. “I am here alone.. I just needed to wash my hands and grab a few paper towels to blow my nose. My allergies have been acting up.” 

“Is it the season for allergies already?” wondered Aurelia.  She replaced the wad of tissue with a fresh one, disposing of the other in the trash.  It seemed as if the blood was finally stopping.  “Why not come with someone, Sir?  These kinds of parties are usually where people show off.”

Someone’s property? It was a little upsetting she thought that of herself. The poor girl looked traumatized by his actions. What was he to do now? Just pretend none of this happened and walk away? Anthony forced on as big a smile he could as he nodded. “My name is Anthony. It is great to meet you. And if you want me to leave you alone and go. I understand.” 

“It’s...nice to meet you too.”  Aurelia inclined her head slightly.  “I mean...this is the men’s bathroom, Sir.  If anything I am the one who should be leaving.”  She cocked her head to the side, trying to figure him out.  A strange man, to be sure.  “You are not here with someone?”

Meddling? Who was she? Was she someone important’s wife or girlfriend? “Meddling? What do you mean by that?” He asked. Anthony was still completely unaware of the slave trade. He’d been here a while, but he had been living a very sheltered life since his arrival. “What is your name? Why shouldn’t I help you?” 

“Exactly that, Sir.  Meddling.  Disapproving of how people treat what is theirs.  You don’t want to get on the wrong person’s bad side, da?”  It was honestly common sense.  “My name is Aurelia.  And I do thank you for helping me, please do not get me wrong.  It just does not seem to have much of a point.”

“Why am I helping you?” Anthony asked as his left eyebrow rose up while he tilted his head in confusion. “Because.. I don’t know..” He added before shrugging. “I try to be helpful whenever I can..” He had literally no idea how to respond to that. It’s like helping certain people here was a sin, or something. 

Aurelia just stared.  And stared.  “Well...thank you, sir.”  It wasn’t as though the urge to help was foreign to Aurelia, but she was unused to that urge coming from the outside towards herself.  “You should be careful who you help, though.  People will think that you are meddling.”

Anthony gulped softly, confused as to why she was so adamant about refusing any sort of help. “Well at least let ME help you..” He replied as he walked over the the paper towel dispenser. He pulled one sheet out and began to rip it up and crumple then into tight, little wads. “Here, use these to plug your nose up.” He replied while handing her a couple of pieces. 

Aurelia watched as the man tore up some tissue for her and took it with slowly, with some hesitation.  “Thank you, sir.”  She stuck one of the wadded-up tissues in her nostril and it immediately turned red.  “Why are you helping me, exactly?”

“Nice to meet you too, Aurelia.” The name was a little difficult for Summer to fit her mouth around. If it proved any bother she’d shorten it. Befriending another newcomer wouldn’t provide her much benefit when it came to learning the ropes, but she could use another friendly connection. “Why should I dwell on misery when I can be happy instead? You could try, if you wanted. You might look pretty with a smile on your face.”

Aurelia’s face remained neutral.  “I smile when the occasion calls for it,” she said, not cruelly, but more matter-of-fact than anything.  “I consider myself an optimist, but that does not mean I don’t think about my current situation.  I would rather not have any delusions about why we are here or what is demanded of us.  If you get too happy, you fall that much further down.”

So she was a female after all, was she sick? Did someone hit her? “Wait wait.. No it’s okay..” He responded as he blocked her way. “Please finish up.. Would you like me to get you some help? A doctor or something?” He added with worry in his tone. He couldn’t help but wonder why so many people, including her people called him sir? Did he really look that old? 

“No,” said Aurelia, perhaps a little more curtly than was strictly necessary.  She took a deep breath through her mouth and tried to calm down.  “No...sir.  I will be fine.  It will stop bleeding soon, I don’t need a doctor.”  This man didn’t look like a Master, nor did he act like one.  He didn’t have the same air of cruelty that others did.

What was this? Did Anthony accidentally walk into the women’s restroom? No, he couldn’t have. There were stand up urinals. But there was a woman in here. A man in drag possibly? Not wanting to stare he walked casually over to the sink next to them. When getting closer he noticed the droplets of blood on the floor and base of the sink. “A.. Are you alright?” He said softly as he slowly approached her. 

Aurelia tensed and looked up slowly at the voice that inquired after her.  Not anyone that she recognized.  Maybe that was good.  “No...I mean, yes.  Sorry, Sir.”  She must have walked into the men’s bathroom by mistake.  Proof of how preoccupied her bloody nose had kept her, if she couldn’t notice all the damn urinals lining the wall.  “I am sorry.  I’m leaving now.”

Henry had been wandering, looking for a bathroom to relieve himself. It was loud and packed. He wasn’t too familiar with anyone at this party and he was sure he had only been invited here because of his family’s name. People were always looking to get some sort of donation or funding out of them. He didn’t take any offense to being invited for a shakedown. It was something to be expected. Unfortunately for him, he entered the wrong room and came face to face with a young girl. “Uh, sorry…” Henry stammered and after a quick observation he saw that she was a slave. He noticed quite a few of them downstairs. Another thing to be expected at elite Sterling parties. “I was looking for a bathroom and got lost I guess.” 

Aurelia sighed and grabbed a bunch of toilet paper, folding it up as neatly and quickly as possible and holding it under her nose.  Her blood stained it quickly, but she was starting to get a cramp from hunching over for so long and the slight respite was better.  The door opened as she left the bathroom and she couldn’t help but flinch when the man entered the room; for a split second she thought it was the Master who had rented her for the evening, come back to wreak more havoc on her face.  She looked away quickly.

“You needn’t apologize to me, Sir.  I’m sorry; here, the bathroom is there.”  She pointed behind her, noticing too late that her hand was still a bloody mess from trying to stem the flow from her nose.

“Only if you choose to take it,” Summer replied, grinning at the girl who had approached. The wristband the young woman wore told Summer that she was a fellow slave, but that didn’t say anything about how long she had been around. However, Summer was sure she had at least seen her face around. Perhaps when being shown her room, or at dinner. It was hard to keep track of all the new faces, and not many were as forward and as friendly as her. “I’m Summer, new girl on the block and absolute sweetheart. May I ask your name?”

“...Aurelia,” she replied after a beat.  “It’s nice to meet you, Summer.  I am a little bit new, myself.”  She sat down and looked over at the far wall of the cafe, which was covered in windows that let the sunlight stream in.  Maybe coming into the cafe was a bad idea after all.  She let out a little sigh and nodded at Summer’s wristband.  “I see that you are the same as I am.  You seem cheerful despite that.”
