Austin was born into a loving family of five: Tyler Kirby (Dad), Emily Johnson-Kirby(Mom), Karolina Kirby, and Jo Kirby. They were the idyllic blue collar family. His mother Emily was a stay at home mother while his father worked at the Wells Fargo as a loan officer. From an early age, Austin was taught that his main goal was to provide for his family and to be a good christian to his fellow man. 

Ever since he was a kid, his father instilled the value of earning an honest wage, he used to run a paper route around his neighborhood at the age of ten. By fifteen, he was working at one of the ritzy restaurants as a bus boy to ensure that his sisters had everything the other debutants had. He spent his weekends working on vintage cars with his grandfather. Austin loved his family and gave so much of himself to them and the church. 

Austin’s natural affinity and talent to baseball came with some serious perks. He was one of the best pitchers in the tri-state area. He loved the game more than he was willing to admit but pipe dreams didn’t pay. He knew that his life couldn’t be hung up on the edge of his cleats. Austin needed to procure a future that would safeguard the livelihood of his family.

By his seventeen birthday, he walked into a recruitment office with his father. Austin, the sappy kid, held the stories of his grandfather’s fight in Vietnam very close to his heart. He wanted to be as noble as him. He enlisted before his eighteenth birthday and turned down the sports scholarships that he had been offered to Duke and shipped off to Fort Benning. 

Austin has been deployed twice and served two tours in Afghanistan. Once his contract was complete with the service, he came home and enrolled into the Police Academy.

Greer had been doing really good keeping her jealousy and insecurities at bay for the time being. She was so wrapped up in everything about being in love with Austin, it made it hard to get distracted. Unfortunately, he couldn’t join her in the bathroom, and it was in said bathroom while in a stall that she heard a couple women discussing her boyfriend’s ass and how amazing it looked in his costume. 

She knew Austin’s ass was great. It was Austin’s ass. That didn’t make it any easier to hear, and she marched her way directly across the bar back to his side as quickly as she could after she washed her hands. “There’s at least two women here who think your costume is the best out there. Had to listen to ‘em talkin’ about how much they wanted to cop a feel while I was in the bathroom, trapped there like a helpless mess.” She slid her hand up onto his shoulder and leaned even closer. “They’re just lucky I didn’t get out of the stall in time to see their faces, otherwise I’d probably be rippin’ every strand of hair outta their head right now.” 

Austin leaned into the bar waiting for Hunter to reappear from the back with whatever grand prop he had in store for the evening. He was quite the craftsman in this respect; all the theatrics were a good outlet for the man of many suitors. It was remarkable but Austin was happy to say he finally scored his happy ending. His heels glided through the space with such heavenly grace; almost like he had been skipping through clouds. Who would have thought the woman of his dreams would finally accept his love? The last couple of weeks had been pure bliss. A Greer inspired paradise that Austin didn’t want to wake up from. Tonight was no different. The two were in moving in tandem. It pained him how sappy he must have been perceived by the people who saw them together. The sight sickeningly sweet. 

Austin’s lips cocked up with a smitten grin at the sound of her voice. “I thought you ditched me for my sister...” his words stilled at the jealousy that piqued in her voice. His hands smoothing around her waist as he pulled her in flush. “I am flattered and equally offended by objectification by strange women. Although, if you agree, I guess we can take this as a win.” He kissed the crease between her brows. “I am lucky that you’re my girl. Doesn’t matter what they said. As hot as it would be to see you get all protective, I would never want you to rumble with one of the regulars from the tank, okay?”

“come on, who’s to say i don’t actually like the girl?” austin knew him better than that though. most of his friends did. sure, davis probably did like her but he was sure to lose interest before too long, he always did. “i’ll be careful. what if she’s out to play me, huh? ever thought of that?” 

“You’ve got quite the track record, you know?” Austin vividly remembered the line of women begging to smack the taste out of the man’s mouth. “I doubt that highly, man. I ain’t saying that you’re out to hurt her but she’s not like other women. She’s softer,” and a virgin. “Just be careful because you never know what this may turn into.”

Waking up in Austin’s arms felt more right than literally anything else Greer had ever done. Since they’d ended up together, she was wondering more and more what she’d done to earn such perfection. Austin was everything she’d wanted and more. The only thing she didn’t love was how long it’d taken her to realize that he was, in fact, the great love of her life. “Well, since you’re putting your jeans on,” she purred, moving to prop herself up on one elbow, “I’m taking it as a sign that you are off the menu. In that case, I could go for some waffles.” 

Shifting even closer to Austin, Greer reached out a hand and rested it on his waist. “But baby, you don’t owe me anything. Working nights is part of the gig, I get it. I used to work nights too.” Greer let out a mildly playful sigh before pressing a kiss to Austin’s shoulder blade. 

Glancing over at the clock, he smirked at the slight tardiness of their morning together. 7:35am. He had allowed himself to be whisked away in the euphoric lands of her presence for an hour over schedule. Austin chuckled at his already fraying structure. Greer had always been the sledgehammer taken to his stone walls; why would his rigidity be any different. “As much as I would like to spend the better half of today with you in bed, there’s things to be done. I made a few commitments to fix a couple things here and there for Hunter. For a grizzly man, he ain’t too good with a wrench.” Austin pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “Waffles it is.” 

“Emphasis on used too,” he hummed. “This is new for us. I don’t want to be that kind of man that leaves you hanging. Hence breakfast in bed and dinner at that place you like. Reservations are at 7 sharp.”

The pallid light cascaded over the hard floor and illuminated the golden colored pup at his feet. Austin slipped into the freshly ironed pair of jeans tossing a glaze back at the sleepy goddess that sprawled around the crumbled duvet. "What are you feeling for breakfast? I pulled a double the last two nights and I owe you something good.” Austin fastened the button before settling along the edge of the bed to put on his shoes.

“Can we go to your house?” Her voice was still quiet, her mind even more contained to the space where he was holding her. The lights, the other people, the events of everything that had unfolded earlier was already slipping away as Greer focused on Austin’s face, his hands on her and the way she felt like she was grounded not to the parking lot beneath her feet but to the man in front of her. “I want to see Cash, and I don’t want to sleep alone.” For the first time in a long time, for as long as she could remember anyway, Greer needed Austin by her side all night. She needed to know he’d be there when the nightmare hit, that he’d be there when she woke up. 

It was strange to Greer to realize just how much of Austin her life was dependent on. He’d been her best friend forever, but boyfriend after boyfriend had come and gone. Austin, however, had stayed, and that much was clearer now than ever. Even when she was dating someone else, Austin was her person. She’d go to him with anything, any emergency or issue, before she’d go to the man she was dating. There’d been a couple times that her exes had dragged his name into a conversation, and Greer always shut it down without second thought, but right now… She was beginning to realize there was something deeper inside of her in regards to the way she felt abut Austin Kirby. Austin had stayed. Austin would stay. Even when he’d been physically half-way around the globe from her, he was mentally and emotionally by her side any time she needed him. Austin wasn’t going to go anywhere.

She swallowed back the emotion that wanted to come rushing forward, from the way her eyes threatened to spring out tears to the way her voice felt even shakier as she tried to form some words. “I need you,” she admitted, adding to the statement she’d made what could only have been a heartbeat ago, but felt like longer. It was always Austin, he was always the one she would need, and Greer felt both lighter and heavier at realizing this. She moved a hand up to Austin’s jaw and let her fingertips brush it gently before hooking under his chin and raising it just slightly. “I’ll always need you, Austin,” she said with sincere finality, hoping that he knew just how much she meant the words. Greer wanted to kiss him, she wanted to show him right then and there how she was feeling, but it was almost too much. Instead, she pushed herself up onto her toes and pressed a quick kiss to Austin’s cheek before sliding her arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. When she finally let herself release him, Greer kept her hands on Austin’s shoulders, wishing for the first time that she could read his mind and know just what he was thinking. 

Austin needed to phase out all of the emotion that swirled dangerous along the fringe of his mind. The dread that filled him his crumbling frame morphed from fear to rage. His skin flushed warm with the excess of adrenaline that piled up on his shoulders. Tonight could have been the moment he lost his shot at true happiness. Greer could have died over a few bucks and whatever bullshit excuse that would bound off their lips. It all would have been over and surely so would he. Pulling in a tight inhale, he allowed her plea to wash over his scorched bones and settle his fury for a moment. “Of course,” he said gently. The less he said the better. He couldn’t quite grasp words to articulate his concerns or his relief. All he needed right now was to take her away from the chaos that swept up within the tight confines of the streets. 

Austin’s hold on her tightened as she folded into his embrace. Greer had been through many a scuffles verbally and emotionally through her life. She never batted any eye in the wake of whatever storm barreled towards her. Yet, here and now, he started to see the cracks splintering her armor right down the middle. “Cash will be happy to have his cuddle buddy back.” His words lacked the levity that this moment needed but it was all he could offer. Her words drew a shiver down his spine. 

I need you.

Who knew three words would be able to invoke such powerful feeling in a stoic man like himself. Austin dipped his lips low to speak words only for her ears. “I ain’t going no where, Greer. Hell or high water, I’m yours always.” The truth woven into every syllable. He had told her in so many ways that he loved her but the sentiment had always fallen on deaf ears. Austin would sing his love for her till his last dying breath. 

“Let’s go home.”

“With my family. To know they’re safe at the end of the day settles me. I spent a long time away doing what I thought was right. I had to put myself in another mindset but they were never far from my mind. The scent of fresh linen and apples always bring me back.”

hot tea: when was the last time you kissed someone (if you haven’t had your first kiss, who would you like that first someone to be?)

“The last time I kissed someone was at the Swinging Door. This girl looks all sorts of lost and there was a man hittin’ on her at the bar. I couldn’t stand there and let her feel uncomfortable. I asked if she wanted an angel shot, that’s a little somethin’ I picked up from Hunter about helping someone out an uncomfortable situation. She shook her head and said she was alright but that she wanted her ex to know she moved on. Before I could excuse myself, she entangled herself in me and leaned in. I wasn’t gonna blow her cover so I let her kiss me. It wasn’t bad. I then escorted her home and told her if ever were in trouble and needed help with this man, I’d come roll down the block in my squad car. It’s never a dull night in Tupelo.”

“I believe that we’re all made for one person. I ain’t saying that we can’t love other people but I feel like God specifically created someone for us. We may not find them in this life time but maybe when we move on beside the Lord. I know y’all are gonna start on how I’m speaking crazy but that’s how I see it. I think Greer was made specifically for me. She’s my soulmate.”

“You mean you’re in love with me? Finally goin’ to admit it after all this time?” Hunter lifted a hand to his chest, feigning to be flattered. “Here I was thinkin’ I’d never measure up to the likes of Greer Fontanella, but you finally said the words I’ve been dyin’ to hear.” There was something entirely too fun about teasing Austin for Hunter to pass up, and he knew it was one of the best parts of their friendship. They could go from serious to fun and back again a dozen times in a single night. “I don’t think she’s as opposed to your kind as you think, but so be it. I like you single, less of your attention gettin’ stolen from me.” 

"I’ve been in love with you since the night I laid eyes on ya,” he blew a feigned sigh of relief; as if he were truly unburdened such a confession off his shoulders. “You just never had room for me in your heart.” Austin bowed his head to mask the mirth that curled up on his lips. “No one measures up to Greer because she’s in a whole other class. You know that. You’re number one in different ways. I have a system,” he cooed. “All I know is that Shiloh worth more than a toss in the sheets. Even is she doesn’t think that she deserves more than that. Plus, Wyatt Tucker isn’t gonna be the man who takes me out, ya know?”

“You’re playing with fire, Davis.” Austin peered back at him from the brim of his mug. “Hadley’s not the type to be played. I am not saying you’re out to play her but I know Rhett will be the first of four brothers who will try to grind your bones into dust. Tread lightly.”

“This is the last time I take the graveyard shift for you, Bree.” Austin shed off the weight of his vest and wiped the sleep from his eyes. Despite the slow shifts, he was thankful for the distraction. He hadn’t really been sleeping all that well lately. “I did enjoy wrangling Old man Tucker out of the Krispy Kreme last night. He’s sleeping off the sugar and booze in the tank. I wanna clear out of here because Wyatt arrives to collect ‘em.”

“We all know your mama is the best damn woman to ever walk this planet, Austin.” Hunter pointed at his friend with a single finger, emphasizing just how much respect he had for Austin’s mom. “Don’t you go frettin’ about what my dick is up to these days. You had your chance, you don’t get to be all jealous over me now.” Hunter knew Austin wanted to act like he was completely infatuated with Greer, but Hunter knew better. “Well, it’s her loss. You’re all mine tonight. We can find you a good little lady to take home if you’re up for it. Or we could give Shiloh Dobbin a ring.”

“I can’t disagree with this,” he hummed humbly. Austin knew that Hunter’s compliment had been based not only on the woman’s actions but her genuine affection. The woman had taken him in like a son; Austin couldn’t be more grateful for that. He loved being the big brother to two wildly strong sisters but it was nice to have brother to lean on.  “I have to fret about it. I am not all that fascinated in the act but I want to make sure you don’t catch nothing. I can’t be in love with an man ridden in disease, can I?” Their banter filled with all sorts of silly compliments and feigned flirting. “I’m all yours always. I am content with my beer.” Austin glared at Hunter at his mention of Shiloh. “I’d be a lucky man if Shiloh wanted to marry me but I don’t think we’d last long. She’s a hurricane and I’m a light rain. Which isn’t excitin’ enough for her.”

Shiloh sprawled out upon the male’s bed as she let out a sigh, feet dangling over the edge because she wasn’t a fucking animal. Plus, the scent of fabric softener that wafted from the sheets was an indication that he’d just washed them recently. Golden tresses crowned her head as she turned her gaze towards him. “Six AM.” The brunette echoed with a wrinkle of her nose. “There’s no way that I’m setting my alarm for 5:45AM just to drag my ass over here. Which means one thing, I’m going to have to already be here.” She wiggled her brows at him then. “Maybe I’ll take your bed. There’s enough place but I understand if you don’t feel comfortable lying down next to all of this. Temptations, you know.” A teasing grin played at her lips as she crossed a leg over the other. 

“The order is simple: Cash, Snacks and then your body. I stay for the first two and keep coming for the last one. Unfortunately, I can’t put it first because you’re keeping it under lock and key while Cash and snacks are always so readily available for me.” As she sat up, the blonde looked over him and the pile of clothes. 

“Today is lau-—-—- That’s so depressing. Come on, leave the clothes. We’re going to go do something fun.”

Austin peered back at the sprawling mess of limbs that cascading along his sheets. Cash trotted happily out of his bed to snuggle closer to Shiloh. Traitor. He thought silently to himself. Austin would have reprimanded for his blatant disregard of Austin’s clear restriction on rolling around on the sheets; but he would allow it today. “A six am start time is generous, Shiloh. Those are lazy days. 5:45 is around the time I finish my run to shower for six.” Austin chuckled at the suggestive nature of her comment. “If you don’t mind sleeping with the windows open, I guess I can’t argue with your logic. Temptation?” His brow rose as he neatly folded along the crease of the top sheet. Austin enjoyed the tight pleat in his linens. “You’re the one who needs to be wary of one’s temptation, Shi. You don’t want show up for the show but to wake up to it. That’s mighty tempting, isn’t it?”

Austin didn’t fight the sly grin that curled up along his lips. Shiloh had always been a thorn in his side and a wonderful temptation that he continued to curb. She didn’t deserve to be used for her beauty. Austin couldn’t give her anything more than that; his heart belonged to someone else. Although, that didn’t mean he didn’t think about it from time to time. “Cash and snacks are superior wants I must say.” 

“I have to finish..” his words tapered off as he turned back to her. “What do you have in mind?”
