Of course the fact that I have absolutely no clue what I am doing means that when I go ahead and eat these later it ought to be a bit interesting.
Time to Sucker Punch a Robot
Because who needs sleep? Clearly not me, that’s why I’m doing renders at quarter to five in the morning.
Well. That sucked.
So on the one hand, there’s the whole promise of living the ultimate cat lady fantasy - you know - dying alone, with no one around to notice, only to be eaten by your cats (it’s the ciiiiiiiiircle of liiiiiiiiiiiiiiife)
And on the other hand, there’s the crippling certainty that platonic AND romantic relationships are hard, that I’m good at neither, and that I may never be in a relationship again because I don’t know how to broadcast that I want to date women to the women I want to date and all the people I want to hang out with live too far away
You’re not going to be allowed to die alone, the family has already sworn to that. :p

There’s stuff that I find kinda sketchy in his stuff, Sandman especially, but like mostly I just never quite had the sort of revelatory experience with Gaiman that others seem to have had. Like my experience with comics was hitting Grant Morrison first, and then Alan Moore, and THEN Gaiman rather than like Sandman being my first experience with that kind of comic, and Morrison and Moore seem to just pluck parts of my brain that Gaiman doesn’t as much?
I mean don’t get me wrong there’s some really really good stuff in Gaiman’s body of work. Season of Mists in particular is some AMAZING comics writing. And Good Omens is a classic. But yeah it’s like, I feel like he gets put in the same class as Pterry as this person who has these Really Profound Things To Say and he never quite gets to that point with me?
I think part of the problem is that reading Gaiman’s comics is a lot like losing their virginity for some people. Like, they grow up reading the Big Two, and you have all the flashy superhero dynamics of the X-Men and Superman and the Justice League. True, there’s drama, there’s danger, but in the end the good guys always win, the status quo remains deified, nothing really shifts. the Big Summer Crossover might kill someone off, but we all know they’ll be back in a year or two.
Then you run into something like Sandman, where it’s dark and gritty and “adult”. And you realize there is more to comics than just superheroes punching out bad guys. Comics can be mature, and that even as you’re growing up you can still enjoy them. Because there is no big summer crossover for something like Sandman. That character you’ve been getting attached to for the last five issues? They’re not going to walk off dying. Yes, that coffin just got lowered into the ground and that’s where they are going to stay. That couple that broke up doesn’t have the page count to reconcile and the bad guy just might actually get away with it. Just like in real life.
But just like losing your virginity, its a one time experience. If you’re first time is with Alan Moore or Grant Morrison or Jhonen Vasquez or issues of Heavy Metal, then Gaiman just sort of falls into equal company with the rest of them. He’s got his good moments, he’s got his bad moments, but there’s nothing that stands out and says, “Yes, this man is a Master.” But the people who did have that first time experience are always going to remember it as special because it was their first time experience. There might be some corner of their mind that admits that someone else is doing it better, but Gaiman will still have that bit of their formative years. And because so many people have had that experience, when they talk to someone else looking for that same experience they reach back to what they remember....
Well, that’s it. I’m officially single.
So, I’m fairly sure that the soap opera writers currently scripting my life, having failed to properly develop the whole evil twin plot line promised way back in last season, have decided to bring on a bunch of sitcom writers to try and inject a bit of new life into the proceedings. Unfortunately, I’m fairly sure they think that the term “punch line” means that someone is actually supposed to throw a punch.
Now I just need to sit back and wait to see how badly this all explodes in my face...

Never ceases to amaze how changing your day by eight hours can fuck up so much over time.
The problem with arguing with myself is that I hate losing and keep getting fucking pissed off at the winner.

I don’t even think an open vote sci-fi/fantasy award would be a bad idea. I just think replacing the Hugos with one would be fucking stupid.
I mean I have yet to see a single award ceremony in any format that wasn’t awful but realistically speaking I do think even non nazi-run Hugo awards show a pretty severe bias towards… eh, old shit basically. I’m sure the $40 fee isn’t helping that.
Pretty much a combination of the $40 fee and the lack of a permanent home. Getting all the nominees for the $40 is nice (at least when the publishers are willing to put them in, which I think Orbit(?) is the only major SF publisher who balks at doing so) but that’s only if the person has both the money to pay for the packet as well as the time and inclination to read through it. The second half of the problem is that WorldCon isn’t really a con, so much as a series of events that gets tacked onto another con by the SFWA. The bulk of its attendees, and by extension voters, were those who could afford to travel each new destination or who were being sent there as representatives of theirpublishing houses. Meanwhile, many of the people attending the host con either didn’t know or didn’t care too much about WorldCon to participate. Hence why things such as Girl Genius ended up winning so many awards that the creators begged off due to lack of mantle space. You had the same people voting for the same stuff over and over, with no new blood coming in and no rules to tell them they couldn’t.
By contrast, this year’s graphic novel category got more nominating ballots than 2013′s Best Novel category got total actual votes. So there’s a fairly decent chance that Homestuck might actually get noticed next year.
As for a simple open vote award, DragonCon just announced that they’re going to be hosting one starting this year, with free registry, nomination, and voting. Considerng how much larger D*C is compared to WorldCon, it will be interesting to see how similar their nominations and awards come out.
Of course the first one of my hobbies to actually make any money would be the 3d renders.
And of course the piece in question would involve gay elves.
Now if only I can figure out how to actually claim the money...
On the same note, if we only get one or two Wolfir in Shadows over Innistrad and someone asks about it, it’s not completely unlikely that the answer would be something like: “They didn’t test well,” despite there only being a very minimal amount of Wolfir in the first place.
There’s actually an in-story explanation on Howlpack Resurgence. Apparently the Cursemute wasn’t a one-and-done deal, but a constant act of Avacyn’s power. She apparently stopped maintaining it, and so no more wolfir are being created. Considering the wolfir in the third set were basically supposed to be furry equivalent of angels, I expect most of the original wolfir have either been destroyed or died, especially since they never had the ability to return to a human state.
1. I don’t mind Werewolves being back. They had left that door open and I was fully expecting it. I don’t quite like the direction they’ve taken with them (it’s just a rehash of the original, except for Arlinn’s pack), but the mere presence of the Werewolves doesn’t bother me at all.
2. Given how much Werewolves there were during Dark Ascension (in-story, not on the cards), you’d expect a lot more Wolfir and you’d expect them to take an important role in the fight against all the baddies.
3. Wizards made a deliberate choice regarding the mechanics of the Cursemute.They could have done it the other way and it wouldn’t have contradicted anything.
See, I never got the impression that wolfir were supposed to mark the end of the werewolves. I always thought it was more, “If you never wanted to spend a couple days a month as a ravenous beast, come say grace and we’ll turn you into hybrid creature. Oh, and you’ll be expected to go fight the werewolves who refuse to submit, maybe the occasional vampire, those jerks!” As far as I was aware, the more spiritual minded and more pack minded individuals just fled deeper into the forest once the angels returned.
That’s why we still have some wolfir - they were the best of the best, the most skilled fighters and cunning predators rolled into one, the ones the werewolves were never able to defeat. The weaker wolfir have all been culled at this point. And since Avacyn doesn’t want to create any more, they don’t get replaced. In the meantime, the angels have gone nuts, so Arlin is mustering the pack and Avasbruck is having another election...
