Revenge

I recently noticed that I have a lot of close friends and family members who love to get revenge on people. I don't know how I've become so close to people like that since I'm not vengeful at all. But, it almost always makes me laugh (as long as it's not against me)... I randomly remembered when Roman got revenge on someone who didn't deserve it.

The story...

There was a cute guy in our history class. Roman did things to get his attention almost every day. BUT, this guy was not gay and paid no attention whatsoever to Roman. This made Roman so upset. This guy also came into class AT LEAST 20 minutes late EVERY day. Roman dealt with his rejection by finding him on facebook (In order to do this, Roman went to our class roster (this class had 60-70 people in it) and went through every guy's name until he found him so that he could have his full name) and reporting him to our professor as being late everyday (our teacher took attendance as part of our grade). The next day, he was, of course, late. The professor talked to him. Our professor even looked at Roman (with that "You were absolutely right" look) when he walked in late. She made him stay after class and then e-mailed Roman that the student's grade would be affected if he continued to come in late. And, he continued to come in late.

I asked Roman if that made him feel better. He said, "Hell yes. No one fucks with me." LMAO. SMH. I love you, Roman. <3

24: A Song From My Favorite Album

It is hard for me to choose a favorite John Mayer album. I LOVE all of them. If we included his live albums, I'd probably pick Any Given Thursday. But if I have to pick from his studio albums, I think Room For Squares has a slight edge over the others for me. I have so many memories attached to almost every song. I've already used several songs from that album for this challenge, but there is one that I love and haven't used yet... My Stupid Mouth.

This song perfectly describes a first (or even second or third date) with someone that just goes wrong. It's boring: "I played a quick game of chess with the salt and pepper shaker." You said the wrong thing: "My stupid mouth has got me in trouble...I could see that she was offended. She said, 'Well anyway...'" You felt uncomfortable the entire time: "She looked out the window, rolling tiny balls of napkin paper," (I have definitely done that). At the end of the night, you're beating yourself up over things you should or should not have done. This song reflects an uncomfortable date perfectly.

Sidenote: I love that this song was playing toward the end of Your Body Is A Wonderland (John often references other songs of his in his music...I love it).

Well, my friend Ashley loves to blog about music, so I decided to take a jab at it. Of course the lyrics are self explantory, but the main reasons I like the song “Breathe Me” by Sia is because (1) The title and (2) “I’m needy.”

First, the title of the song is “Breathe Me.” This relates more to me than the person of interest because I love the smell of cologne. It never fails. Whenever I come across an amazing cologne, I melt right into my shoes. I swear colognes get me into the mood. Okay, that was more of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. Aside from this, I like the thought of someone else taking in your scent—your pheromones. I always thought that it was romantic when someone wears a shirt to bed that is covered in their lover’s cologne. I honestly see myself doing that. It’s an adorable gesture that means “I miss you dearly.” Sadly, the only time I have actually seen this done was when my mother’s second husband passed away. She slept in his shirts for about a month, but I digress on that sad note.

Secondly, out of all the verses that jumped out at me, “I’m needy” sums me up perfectly—even Ashley would agree. Unfortunately, it’s true. I am a handful and I require a lot of attention. Moreover, because I am a needy person, I tend to be jealous of my crush’s or lover’s interaction with specific individuals. This should not be confused with envy, as I do not worry about my ability to talk to others on an intimate scale. Back to the point, I usually see others as competition, but let’s not undermine the trust that I strongly believe should be basis of all relationships.

Overall, I love the simplicity of the song. The piano introduces the listener into a dark, confusing world. However, the piano is the appropriate instrument for the first few verses because the tone and setting must be established. Then, after thirty seconds, a xylophone slowly speeds up the tempo before a sudden pause. Then, the piano, xylophone and drums pick up the beat. Suddenly, the violins are introduced so as to represent a sudden rush of emotions—similar to the emotions in the lyrics. Although my analysis may be far-fetched, that’s honestly how I feel about this beautiful song.

22: Favorite John Mayer Trio Song - Daughters

I enjoyed the Try! album a lot (though I didn't really care for the covers...I'm not really a fan of his covers, except Free Fallin), but I loved this version of Daughters.

Sidenote: I'm trying not to repeat any songs so that's why I chose Daughters over Gravity. The John Mayer Trio version of Gravity is amazing (but every version of that song is amazing...I love that song)!!

THE ACADEMY IS F***ING UP

My Thoughts on the Oscar Nominations...

I'll start with the good...

My favorite movie of the year, Hugo, leads the nominations with 11. Hugo is an incredible film with amazing directing & acting. It is innovative without trying too hard to be. It captivated me from beginning to end. I haven't been impressed with a 3D movie since Avatar (though only the visuals of that movie impressed me...the rest was unoriginal, predictable and boring). But Hugo managed to use 3D brilliantly. It added to the film in such a way that you felt you were on a journey with Hugo & Isabelle. Scorsese is a genius!

Best Actress Nomination for Michelle Williams in My Week With Marilyn - She deserves that nomination. Her performance was incredible. She is captivating. I love Marilyn Monroe!! I planned on watching this film and thinking that Michelle Williams (or anyone) wouldn't be able to capture the essence of Marilyn. BUT SHE DID!! She's up against Meryl Streep (I have yet to see The Iron Lady). After I see that, I'll be able to more definitively say who I think should win this. But I am glad that Michelle Williams received the nomination.

Now, the bad...

Original Score - John Williams is the best film composer of all time. It's not even a question. He is nominated twice (War Horse, The Adventures of Tin Tin). Great. But what about DRIVE!?!?!? As I watched Drive, I kept thinking, "This music is fantastic." (Sidenote: It's great!! If you haven't seen it, go see it!!)...I'm upset that it didn't get nominated, but I'm not shocked that the Academy voted in Oscar favorites.

Original Song - TWO nominations?!? That's ridiculous.

Best Director - Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life...First off, he is one of my favorites. I looked forward to seeing The Tree of Life because of him and Sean Penn (though Penn played a smaller role than I anticipated). I wanted to like it. I hated it (I will discuss this further when I discuss Best Picture nominations). I thought the directing was underwhelming. I was upset with the progression of the film. The ending was awful. The film tried TOO HARD to be innovative (which is one of the worst things a film can do, IMO).

Ryan Gosling - He had a phenomenal year. Of the movies I saw in 2011, Drive was in my top 5. But his role in The Ides of March is what should have been nominated. AND, if Melissa McCarthy can get a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Bridesmaids (What a joke!! Don't get me wrong, though...I thought that movie was hilarious), then Ryan Gosling should get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Crazy, Stupid, Love. That film was much funnier and he brought more to Crazy, Stupid, Love. than McCarthy brought to Bridesmaids. I understand that their competition is different. I'm just pointing out that Gosling gave 3 great performances and they all went unrecognized. I see him becoming one of the best actors ever. Yes, EVER.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Snubbed. Again. I also think Armie Hammer got snubbed out of a Best Supporting Actor nomination just because Leo was his co-star. I'm not going to discuss this because I have already written a blog about Leonardo DiCaprio & The Oscars. My last complaint: Best Picture nominations. I have only seen 4 of the 8 films. But, I only enjoyed ONE of those films, Hugo.

The Tree of Life - Terrible. Absolutely terrible. You would have to pay me a lot of money to sit through that again. Malick tries too hard to bring in innovative visuals. Oftentimes those visuals didn't fit with the movie or add anything to the screenplay. Instead, it took away from the screenplay. It created a disconnect from the emotions I may have started to feel with the characters. By the time it got back to the story of the film, I was so bored that I just wanted it to end. I always say that if you want to critique the Oscars, you have to watch all the nominated films...but if you critiqued the Oscars without seeing this film, I wouldn't undermine your opinion at all. It's THAT bad.

The Help - I am one of the most sensitive movie watchers. Even bad films can make me cry. There are two things in movies that make me cry more than anything though... Animals and Racism. I brought tissues because I just knew this was going to make me cry. WRONG!!! This movie is everything you expect. It brought nothing new. I didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. I wanted more to happen. It was just predictable, predictable, PREDICTABLE. It wasn't horrible, but it definitely wasn't good. I'd give it a 5.5/10 (and most of those points are for Minny's "pie").

The Descendants - I thought this was going to be an original movie about love and life. It wasn't. It was just a boring film with uninspiring characters. I didn't care what happened to anyone because none of them drew me in. There were a few decent scenes here and there, but I found it to be mostly boring.

With that being said, I have a lot of movies to watch. After I watch all the nominated films, I will give my list of who I think should win versus who I think will win. :)
