CLAUDE-IO.:
“You can sit there and call yourself a flower that’s about to wilt all you want, but nothing you say can hide the fact that I’ve got you all figured out, oh Hilda the Battle Queen. If anything, battle seems to be where you blossom the most. That’s not to say your petals aren’t always on full display, but let’s be real here: have you ever actually listened to yourself when you’re swinging that axe?”
Pausing for but a moment, Claude followed his words up with a coy wink that was as mysterious as the realm he hailed from.
“I’m not saying I’ve heard you chant your name before, but I am saying that you should definitely do it more often. Who knows? Maybe that’s just the muse you need to get Lord Holst off your back before all of House Goneril descends upon you like moths to a flame.”
However, despite how fun and whimsical their back and forth was proving to be, both of them perhaps knew such an air could only last so long. As they stood before each other with banter to spare, there were hundreds– thousands of soldiers losing their lives in the wake of the almighty emperor’s insatiable conquest. It was hard to accept that this was the world they were living in– that these once great halls of Garreg Mach were dilapidated and stained with the blood of knights and students alike that fought and died here to defend their home– but that was simply the reality they shared.
Forever aware of this, the Leicester Alliance’s future and Almyra’s last hope looked at Hilda once again, his brows furrowed and his lips slanted with a pain caused by the weight of all resting upon his shoulders.
“You’re right that days like that really are all I really want anymore, but I guess fate herself is a mistress not too keen on letting any of us sleep with a good head on our shoulders. I’m not usually the one to sit and brood or wonder when things will get better or how things will get better, but one thing’s for certain: a no strings-attached trip is what all of us need after this long, bloody war’s finally– f i n a l l y come to an end.”
Sighing and content that his one moment of weakness for the day finally came out without much of a fuss, Claude retained his smirk once more.
“I’m not so sure why you sound so excited, though. Isn’t the kind of day where you laze around without much of a purpose the one you’re always having when you make everyone do everything for you, or has my keen eye for spotting you skipping your duties for the week finally begin to wane?”
“Geez, you didn’t have to be so blunt.”
Simply by seeing his expression shift into one of sadness, the weight of the world resting on his shoulders, did her own cheery demeanor begin to melt into one of concern and melancholy. He certainly had a point - how could she be so carefree considering what was going on just outside of the walls of the monastery? How could she even kid around when the two of them were always so quick to jab the other with observations about their respective facades?
Just another manic “take-your-pick” Moon on the yearly calendar.
She shook her head, and rested her hands in front of her - crossed, as she allowed the seriousness to take hold. A rarity, but reserved only for those closest to her - Claude being the number one.
“Well, you know as well as I do why I do this. Forget about the axe - that’s just a family thing.” She began, though a hint of playfulness still remained on the tips of her words - dancing about, such fun! She could do this all day if she wanted to. “That goes without saying, don’t you think? And hey, you can’t argue with this, can you? I do so much more than I ever did before the war started. That kind of stuff shifts your perspective.”
“At some point you have to ask yourself what you’re really doing, y’know? I mean, look at... like, anyone from our class. Once carefree school days are over, that’s it, right? You can’t really go back after that.” She concludes, looking away a moment before allowing a smile to return to her lips - small, suggestive, and as always, playful.
“You’re lucky that you can scheme all you want, but nobody’s really seeing the man underneath. But you can’t show them that, I guess, because everyone’s suffering enough as it is. I bet that’s what you’re thinking. It’s kinda the same thing with me. Sure, expectations and all that. I just can’t stand it, but that’s old news to you. You ever think of this?”
“Me being the same old Hilda is kind of like a motivator for the army. It’s a reminder of what times used to be like. I mean, not me and only me, but you get it. I don’t wanna change something tried and true. That wouldn’t be, well, me. Risk-taking is only good in fashion, and sometimes in battle. You’re really the risk-taker here. I’m the one who tells everyone that it’s gonna be okay, ‘cause I’m just Hilda, and no war is ever gonna change that. Same for all of them. It’s gonna be okay, I say, by asking others to do what I’m supposed to do.”
“I’m so surprised Lorenz hasn’t settled down yet. You’d think with such a winning personality, someone would have snatched him up by nooow! Guess nice guys do finish last!”
EYEPATCH MAN?:
@axepectations liked for a starter.
In retrospect, you could say Hilda and Nori had a lot in common. Initially, at least, neither one liked to do more work than was necessary. Neither one was particularly eager to be at the school. And they were even in the same house (Golden Deer)…But they’d never interacted. Partially because Nori was newer to the school - but also probably because Nori hated socializing.
Yeah, the most he’d probably given to any students the first day was an irritable grunt. So when he approached Hilda of all people…No doubt there would be some surprise.
“You dropped this,” He sighed, handing them lipstick. Oh, Nori! That’s unexpectedly kind of you! Except Hilda had probably dropped it like a week ago at least, and Nori had just been too lazy to return it.
“Oh, look at that!” Hilda exclaims at the sight of the relatively untouched (and unused) tube of lipstick being handed to her by the rather... unusual looking man. She had seen him before - being students in the same house would certainly do that to an individual - but had of course never had it in her to talk to him.
Too much work, after all.
“You’re just too nice. Thanks so much! I’ve been looking aaall over for it, but just couldn’t find it! Oh boo, I thought, ‘cause it was so expensive, too... and the latest it thing!” Though a week had passed, so it being “in” was out the window at this point, she still gave him a relieved smile, soft and sweet. “But now I don’t have to worry ever again, with diligent eyes like yours, uh...”
“Eyepatch.. Boy? Man? I... assume you have a name. Can’t be enrolled without one. And, uh, I reaaally don’t wanna call you that... assuming that is an eyepatch. But it’s a really weird eyepatch. Kinda cute too, though.”
HOPE EDELGARD DIDN’T HEAR ME... ( @vonhrxsvelg )
“Oh nooo! You couldn’t possibly mean... gosh, I couldn’t possibly do THAT! I mean, just look at me, and then look at you - there’s just no comparisooon!”
Her words come out squeaky, high-pitched, in response to a fellow student - nameless, unimportant, but still asking her of all people to complete a menial task - and completely insincere to the trained ear. Perhaps to Claude, or to members of other houses who were not as acutely aware of her little mind games (especially with men, the easiest of targets), it would be easily read as such. But alas...
This boy was not so lucky. Without putting up much of a fight, he simply bowed his head and picked up the rest of the bricks near the end of the Academy building, taking them off to their destination.
Keeping her worried expression for a moment longer, she allowed her lips to pull back into a satisfied smile. To accompany it, a small giggle.
“Hee hee, sorry... just wasn’t feeling it today. ...Maybe another time?”
CLAUDE-IO.:
@axepectations.
“You mean to tell me that you’re going to do more than just complain about all those wordy letters you have to write to Lord Holst?” Almost as if he couldn’t live had he passed up the chance to tease Hilda once again, the revolutionary smirked the moment their eyes met. “I mean, you know me: I don’t judge. However, here I would’ve thought wanting to have a vetted interest in the war meetings miiiiight have been a bit too much effort for you to handle.”
Arms behind his head and his eyes casting a coy look towards his closest friend, Claude cooed.
“All jokes aside, you know better than anyone that we always welcome having you. After all, I’ve come to find that there’s so many roles on a battlefield that only Hilda the Unconquerable could ever hope to fill. To you that may seem like more work– and it is– but there really is just no way around it.”
“Oh Claude, did you forget? I’m not unconquerable - I’m just a delicate flower. Step on me on the ground and I’ll just wilt! These arms of mine are as breakable as twigs, you know. Actually, you should know as well as I do that lifting that axe of mine is too much work to begin with.” Comes Hilda’s immediate reply with a shake of her head, though lips just barely hiding a small smile of amusement at his wily words. He certainly knew how to charm a girl - but sadly for him, or maybe for the onlooker amused by the whole situation, she was immune.
Impenetrable and unconquerable - at least deep down.
And she can hardly stifle a chuckle.
“If I have to fight, I have to fight. I mean, I’m not disputing that, you know.” She continues, allowing her smile to grow just enough. “It’s just the sweat that I hate, and the ache in my arms afterwards. It’s not like lifting a pile of books - I mean, we’re fighting for something, aren’t we? It’s not like we’re just lounging around the monastery like old times, buuut...”
“I take it having the right to be as lazy as me is part of your whole dream, isn’t it? In a free country, you can just lie on the grass all day, or make as many accessories as you want, or... oh! Go on as many trips with your friends as you want, no strings attached! If you put it like that, that sounds sooo much more fun.”
TIME TO GET SERIOUS, MARIANNE! ( @vonedmund )
“Hey, Marianne! I have a... itty-bitty proposal. But you kiiinda have to hear me out, okay?”
Hilda extends an arm in truce, knowing better than to simply run and approach her fellow classmate - perhaps the one who was the least social in the entirety of Golden Deer ( no shit, Sherlock - or no duh! ). She smiles widely, pink eyes sparkling with both determination and excitement - a dastardly combination.
“Actually, let’s make this a little fun. Remember that thing I do? You know... that thing? C’mon, guess. Just guess! I know you know!”
like this post for a starter, and i’ll randomly choose pre/post-timeskip for the setting ! most likely will be fairly short.
