What's it like working at Sephora? Do you like it pros and cons? THanks Trish ^^
Hi! Sorry I didn’t respond so quickly- not too sure how long this was asked previously.
I really loved working at Sephora because of my coworkers, but it definitely killed my passion for wanting to do make-overs on actual people. After I quit Sephora, it was a huge relief off my shoulders.
-Quarterly/monthly bonuses
-Free make up/skin-care/devices/etc.
-Being able to make connections with Brand Reps + get training from them to get free products
-Get the first scoop on upcoming releases
-Extensive training of how to apply skin care + make up on others. You would also be able to have a private training in-store from brand reps.
-20% off discount that can be used online as well (this is for non-sephora brands), 40% sephora brand. For holidays, you would get 30% off non-sephora brands and additional discounts from other brands as well. You can use this discount at any sephora, as long as you can provide ID.
-If you were recognized as employee of the month, you would have a celebration where you’d get free make up + make-overs.
-You’re able to grow your knowledge about make up, make samples for yourself, and try whatever you want tbh.
-Overworked and under appreciated - promotions are hard to come by tbh unless you’re a cashier.
-poor management. I had managers be transferred pretty often to work at other stores. Often times, new management would be even worse.
-HAVING TO DEAL WITH RUDE CLIENTS. Some people are really entitled, and some are nitpicky about what they want for a make-up look.
-I was always pressured to have better time management for clients, but I never got that aspect down. You’re expected to create a nice look for them within 45 min-1 hr, I don’t think that’s enough time as well. ESPECIALLY DURING PEAK HOURS (afternoons on weekends). You might have like 4-5 make-over’s that day with a small break in between + your 30 min lunch where it wasn’t enough to eat a full meal.
-Unable to move into other areas. I was in the color world, where the benefits was the fact that I was able to get more make-up product as “gratis”, however I really loved organizing and wanted to be more into operations (doing shelving/moving products around, inventory, etc. they had more of a relaxed schedule). I was placed in this section for a bit, but they ended up fucking me over by over-working me in color
-not enough staff to cover breaks, make-over’s, etc. Having to juggle 10 clients at once doing make-over’s, sales, etc.
-constant micro-managing depending on your manager, especially about your time
-you were constantly expected to move “worlds” (ex: skin, cashier, color, operations) - this is fine, but you were doing more work than expected
-you were never guaranteed enough hours to work unless they really liked you. They do play favoritism (depends on your manager)
-lots of drama with upper management that I was never part of, but I heard that upper management claimed the good free make up first, and dispersed what was not as useful/not that great to other people.
This is all I can think of for now, but I can always add more when it comes around to it! Sorry for the late reply xo
