what the fuck is UP rpc, time to talk about asian fc ignorance!
time and time again, people have been shouting “don’t interchange asian faceclaims!” which only sticks to 12% of the writers who see it while the rest either don’t care and/or ignore it. well you know what? no matter how accepting of poc you think you are, if you believe all asians are the same, guess what? you’re a racist.
here are some “All Asians Are The SameTM” things that i’m sure you’re all well aware of (and may have turned a blind eye to):
EXHIBIT A: JAMIE CHUNG (gif credit)
jamie chung is korean. she cannot and should not be chosen to portray mulan, a chinese heroine from chinese folklore.
EXHIBIT B: LANA CONDOR (gif credit)
lana condor is vietnamese. she cannot and should not be chosen to portray jubilation lee (x-men/marvel, chinese), saya kuroki (deadly class, japanese), lara jean covey (to all the boys i’ve loved before, korean).
EXHIBIT C: CHO CHANG (gif credit)
cho chang is a chinese/half-chinese character from the harry potter series. stop using korean faceclaims or lana condor if you don’t want to use her film actress, katie leung.
EXHIBIT D: COLLEEN WING (gif credit)
colleen wing is a japanese character from iron fist/the marvel comics. her live action actress, jessica henwick, is chinese. stop miscasting her.
now i know some of you are thinking “but the casting directors chose them!” yeah, and most of those people were probably white, so it sucks that they didn’t know any better but if they wanted to cast someone correctly, they would have.
“at least they’re asian!” yes, and while i would prefer a miscast over a whitewash, it doesn’t change the fact that it only promotes the “all asians are the same” mindset which is not only harmful but also offensive. do better.
