Yeah, no. This is exactly how this fan base has become so fucking insufferable. Like I genuinely do not understand the inability to take someone’s words at face value instead of dissecting every sentence until you can manufacture a completely different argument.
Paige was not calling Azzi a fucking role player. She was not saying Azzi’s only value is defense and floor spacing. She was acknowledging something people have said about Azzi her entire career which is that even when she is not shooting the ball, her presence alone impacts the game and makes her team better. But apparently now we have to pretend like that’s a bad thing because some of you are so committed to being miserable.
Azzi has said repeatedly that she is happy. You can clearly SEE that she is happy. She is on a winning team. She is playing meaningful, impactful minutes. She is a rookie who is not even halfway through her first season. Yet somehow her own fan base is becoming her biggest enemy. If they win there is something to complain about. If they loose there is something to complain about and it’s tiring as fuck.
You cannot constantly complain about the way the media talks about Azzi while simultaneously reducing her entire value to shot attempts. Azzi is just as important to this team as anyone else. Her impact is not erased because she does not take 15 shots a game.
And I genuinely do not understand looking at how miserable Paige was last season and deciding you want Azzi to have the same experience. For what? So she can put up individual numbers that everyone would immediately downplay if Dallas was losing? Because last time I checked been there done that and trust and believe it wasn’t a pleasant experience watching someone’s all wnba season be defined by 10 wins.
And why are we acting like we just discovered the world development??? I’m so sick of hearing about how Dallas is stunting her growth when she’s still a fucking ROOKIE. She’s not gonna become a finished product overnight. And acting like you know what she’s gonna look like in 4 years when it hasn’t even been 4 MONTHS is disingenuous. But I would love to hear the explaination for how a terrible coach and a terrible team is gonna help her development? Because all I’m hearing is coulda, woulda, shoulda, about Seattle and Washington. Show me how their players are being developed? More shot attempts does not equal being developed. And please explain to me what role you think she would’ve had on the Lynx. With Courtney and KMac I would love to know how much better her usage would be there than in Dallas? And don’t compare it to Miles because there’s a big ass difference between a pg and a sg.
This is what happens when you play on a winning team. Players make sacrifices. Jackie Young could average 20 shot attempts a night, but she plays with A’ja and Chelsea. All of them sacrifice individual numbers to win. The same player is not the star every single night. And yet they are still WNBA All-Stars, champions and Olympians. That is what these players actually care about. Winning. Not stat lines so parasocial fans can make a graphic for Twitter stan wars.
At some point, you have to admit you do not actually want to enjoy anything. You do not want Azzi to be happy. You want her to be the player YOU think she should be. And for what? To prove a point? She was the number 1 recruit out of high school, she was a first team all American in college, she was the number one draft pick in the WNBA and is on pace to be on all defensive team as a rookie. She doesn’t have shit to prove.
I have genuinely stepped away from this fandom because the constant complaining has become unbearable. And then yall want to get on socials and complain about Azzi not being on there. I wouldn’t be on here either if I had the fanbases they did. At the end of the day Paige did not insult Azzi. She did not call her a role player. She did not say she would never be more than defense and spacing. You can dislike her role. You can want her to shoot more. You can debate her usage. But at some point grow up and move the fuck on. Y’all are acting like kids who didn’t get their way and it’s tiring. Knit picking every game, every interview, every interaction because you want to be angry is unfair to her. Like just stop.
