SLAM Tuesday, week 5!
SO impressed with everyone this week. Dave, Amy, Allie, Flounder, Nate, and Hilary - you guys are amazing! We’re always excited by people who want to share their creativity, so if you’d like to join next week, let me know. I’m hoping we can start exploring different prompt-types in the future, as well.
Just a review for those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about. SLAM Tuesday is a virtual/IRL meeting of friends who have nothing better to do than write fun/stupid poetry on Tuesday nights. Everyone is given a prompt and then there’s a 5-minute planning period. You get 15 minutes to write your poem, after which, you perform it for the entire group. There are absolutely no rules in terms of form or length - it’s all about your own personal creative expression.
Prompt: Hitting on a girl in a bar
Wow. I mean, I’ve had a few tonight, but you’re like a hundred drinks in and I’m pretty sure you think she’s in fucking love with you. Let me take a guess - There’s this girl. There’s this girl and you see her standing there, all talkin’ with her girlies, hair all primped and twirly and she’s just whirlin’ around the dance floor wishing she could kick off her switch-blade stabbing stilettos and just cut that Brittany Spears rug up for the rest of her life, without EVEN realizing you were once but a twinkle in your daddy’s twenty-something eye socket.
But you, my friend, you’ve got one hand on your luke-warm Miller Light, and one hand in your Hollister jean-tight pocket thinking you can lock. it. DOWN if you just blast that ice-brewed view all up on her nasties for the rest of the night.
uhhhhhh do you date me? ARE YOU FORREAL?
Wait wait wait wait wait wait. you really don’t have a clue, do you, boss? Maybe I’m missing something from my side of the room, watching ladies move through from this side to that in the liquor-sticky seat where I was sat attacking with full-Hun force my plans for the evening -
Just me. and my friends. without other intentions but then,
She starts to make a butterfly move your way and I’m wondering, did I just mis-call this game??!?! the seas part as your heart skips a beer-slowed beat thinking, “holy shit! this might actually happen.”
but wait - whoooooshhhhhhhhhhhh
and mountains crumble and babies cry and rivers run dry into oblivion and Atlantis takes one last gasping breath, sinking into the unforgiving ocean, as she doesn’t even look twice slipping right through the masses and the shattered pieces of your broken heart.
Oh, she’s just going to the bathroom…. Yikes. You’re bad, bro.
Maybe next time you’ll stop wondering what size she is and look into her eyes and say, “Hi! my name is *blank*” and it won’t be in some dank-ass bar on a tuesday night.
next time, bro. next time……

UD4SQ Day! A bit wet, a lot of fun.
The lines are so clean.
The color contrasts so stark.
I want a loft. Bad.

Had Christmas in Florida this year. Went to the Mote Aquarium in Longboat key and saw this little Clownfish.
If only there were more windows facing the valley.

In Praise of: 90.1FM WRTI
I have hockey practice until late on Sunday nights. After almost two hours of skating, I am both exhausted and invigorated. Normally I don't listen to the radio much at all, let alone public radio, but late on Sunday nights WRTI (Temple University), has a program called "The Historical Approach to the Positive Music." It sounds like a New Age, kool-aid drinking cult guide, but really its some lively, inventive jazz.
My favorite from last night was Matthias Lupri's "You Just Never Know." Its heavy on the vibraphone, which is not something I've heard much of before. Combined with the empty highways and the yellow and white reflectors on the road, the song made me feel like I was joyriding on a spaceship with evenly spaced stars flying by me on both sides. Considering I had just done suicides for the last 20 minutes on the ice, that's one hell of an accomplishment.
What scares me
From the final Monmouth University poll of the Delaware Senate race:
35%: voters who think Christine O'Donnell is qualified to be a senator
38%: voters with a favorable view of O'Donnell
41%: voters who say they will vote for O'Donnell.
This means that roughly 6% of DE voters are voting for someone they don't think is qualified to do the job, and about 3% are voting for someone they admit to not liking.
The only other explanation is that they intend on voting, but don't know if O'Donnell is qualified and don't know her well enough to have an opinion. Which means that they are voting with no knowledge of who or what what they are voting for. That is what scares me.

One of the other things that came from my visit with Liz was the realization that this is Apple cider season. Had to go to my local orchard today to get some cider, donuts, and apple bread. Mmm.

Now that I'm not actually writing, I can take time to think about ideal spaces to write in. This has to come close.
