What we can do, if we have the will, is make it harder for those who want to kill innocents to obtain firearms. After 20 young children were massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Congress took up two modest pieces of legislation: a ban on military-style assault weapons, which no hunter needs; and a requirement for universal background checks before buying guns. Both had overwhelming public support. Neither became law. Can this time be different? Only if we hold Congress, Obama and the presidential candidates of both parties accountable. Only if we remember Mother Emanuel.

It is time to break up the largest financial institutions in the country. Wall Street cannot continue to be an island unto itself, gambling trillions in risky financial instruments while expecting the public to bail it out. If a bank is too big to fail it is too big to exist. We need a banking system which is part of the job creating productive economy, not a handful of huge banks on Wall Street which engage in reckless and illegal activities.

American democracy is not about billionaires being able to buy candidates and elections. It is not about the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson and other incredibly wealthy individuals spending billions of dollars to elect candidates who will make the rich richer and everyone else poorer. According to media reports the Koch brothers alone, one family, will spend more money in this election cycle than either the Democratic or Republican parties. This is not democracy. This is oligarchy. In Vermont and at our town meetings we know what American democracy is supposed to be about. It is one person, one vote — with every citizen having an equal say — and no voter suppression. And that’s the kind of American political system we have to fight for and will fight for in this campaign.

Students are now fighting back after being unjustly suspended
This week, the organization DoSomething.org is launching a campaign called #SuspendedForWhat, encouraging students to tell stories on social media about why they may have been unfairly punished in school and advocate for greater change by meeting with and pressing their school districts directly. It’s this consciousness that will allow students to advocate for real change.
Meet Chargaux, a talented string duo composed of Charly & Margaux, who also head up a Brooklyn-based art collective. Violin & viola, vocals, visual arts, the total package. These gorgeous girls have been making black girl magic happen for the past five years, from teaching violin and viola to children in schools and summer camps, to composing original string arrangements for contemporary artists, to funding and releasing their own original music. What I’m trying to say is, shawties got the juice(s and the berries too #TeamNatural #represent #yasss). This cover they did of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” got over HALF A MILLION views. So, imagine my surprise & dismay when I discovered that their Indiegogo campaign to fund a US tour had only received 46 donations, totaling just 10% of their goal :/
To put that in perspective, if they had an actual nickel for every time someone watched just THIS ONE VIDEO, they’d have enough to fund their tour, plus about $8,000 change. Can we each spare a nickel?
These lovely young ladies are clearly gifted individuals with a passion for spreading the love of beautiful music. They deserve the chance to do it live!
