And so to continue a Badgerwood Drums theme, the third of my trilogy of custom drum tributes to my favourite films is the Brenda Bristols Premier Projector kit!

Where to begin; the drums or the film? I'll start with the drums. I've had a pair of matching Premier Projector toms (12x10" & 14x12") and a punchy but odd sized 20x18" Projector bass drum in my workshop for a few years. The intention was to combine them all and do a "faithful restoration" collective re-wrap job, going for a Clem Burke-style red sparkle finish, however...

...I DON'T DO FAITHFUL RESTORATIONS!!

So, apart from cleaning up all the chromework on the lugs & hoops and waxing the bearing edges (got to love those beefy 1980s Premier re-rings!) it was taken apart and put back together again with a new mismatched set of Evans hydraulic heads and a bespoke uniformed new wrap. This is where I went a bit niche!

I've always loved the film An American Werewolf In London, but it's the film-within-the-film 'See You Next Wednesday' that's the real inspiration here. It's the porno film that plays in the background when David meets hisundead friend Jack in a Piccadilly Circus adult movie cinema (this is pre-internet, kids!) and stars a personal hero of mine, a certain Linzi Drew as the character Brenda Bristols.

I could waffle on like a fanboy about Linzi, but I'll just recommend reading her autobiography Try Everything Once Except Incest And Morris Dancing for all the juice. The fact that Linzi grew up just a couple of streets away from where I was born (and now live) also ties in with this kit and the general anarchic/creative vibe in BS3 right now.

So the wrap features a square image of Linzi from the film repeated in a chequered red white & blue pattern. The bass drum head artwork also features an image of Linzi that was digitally modified to look like a watercolour symmetry painting with Badgerwood Drums wording in the finest late 70s/early 80s porno font (the devil is definitely in the detail here!).

The best post script of all... when I posted pics of this kit on my Instagram, the first person to 'like' was none other than Linzi Drew Honey herself!

And so, to coincide with the much anticipated third season of Twin Peaks, the latest Badgerwood Drums custom build: the 'Black Lodge' kit. I've been a massive David Lynch fan ever since seeing Blue Velvet back in 1986 and so had been wanting to combine my love of custom drums & Lynch's films in some way with my next project (similar to my Kubrick inspired 'Overlook Hotel' kit – see previous posts).

I was inspired by the bold look and iconic imagery of the chevron carpet & crimson curtain décor of The Red Room (the waiting room to the Black Lodge!) and so picked this as the basis of my colour scheme. I also wanted to upcycle an old set of drums again (rather than use brand new shells) as I'm a recycler at heart, plus the challenge of breathing new life into tired looking old drums is what Badgerwood Drums is all about.

The hardware was dismantled, bared, primed, sprayed & lacquered, the tired & scratched-up old wrap removed and replaced with a brand new bespoke chevron-patterned wrap, a new set of Evans red hydraulic Level360's applied throughout on batter side (in keeping with the Red Room theme!) with old style Evans CAD/CAM heads on the reso side, and finally a custom bass drum display head featuring a portrait of Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn's character from Twin Peaks) as illustrated by the fantastic Elicia Donze (euclase.tumblr.com). Despite encountering some very stubborn & corroded screws in the dismantling stage of this project, and some doubts about going with white (not black) hardware, I have to say this kit turned out, well, pretty damn fine!

Another Badgerwood Drums custom job is finally complete. This 'Overlook Hotel' customised kit was inspired by the Stanley Kubrick film The Shining, with the wrap finish specifically referencing the famous Aztec print carpet design of the hotel. The bass drum head artwork is also a nod to the final shot of the film.

Drum sizes are: 22x20" bass drum, 16x14" & 15x14" floor toms, 14x7" snare drum, and a 12x8" rack tom. Heads are Remo Fiberskyn 3 Ambassadors throughout.
