Questioning

On Sunday, I sat and listened to the pastor and friends talk about how nothing in this life matters.  

I beg to differ.  Everything matters because this is our only chance at this experience.  

I don’t really believe in heaven or eternity or reincarnation, but if these things do in fact, exist, I can’t possibly believe that this experience is for nothing.  

Even if reincarnation is a thing, I won’t experience this life again.  I won’t see things through these eyes.   I won’t have these opportunities and so I can’t help but think that this life is vitally important. 

I understand the deeper meaning of not being consumed by the things in my world or my circumstances, the Buddhists call this non-attachment I think.  And yes, I agree that these things don’t matter, but I hesitate to throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak.   To say that none of it matters is to throw one’s hands up and wait for the next life.  But to quote the great prophet, Jimmy Buffett, “I’d rather die while I’m living than live while I’m dead." 

The fact is, no one knows for certain what comes after, if anything at all.  This moment is all we have.  Don’t waste it.  Don’t squander it.  It matters.  It all matters.  Because it’s all we have.
