Sonic Underground episodes will be goofy as fuck and then have one scene where Manic says some shit like "Sonic had one gnarly family and Sonia was pretty spoiled haha but I've always had to fend for myself on the streets just to survive and I've always wanted some place where I felt like I belonged & i honestly dont even know what I'd be doing right now if it weren't for you guys, dude" and the most acknowledgement it gets is Sonic going "cowabummer, dude"

basic lore

this takes place in a universe separate to the usual canon/s and is set in the modern day - it's been quite a while since this universe's version of sonic underground, so manic and his siblings (as well as scourge) are somewhere in their early 20s

manic currently lives in a small apartment in downtown station square. it's cramped and cluttered (he still has a compulsion to "collect" things), but he likes cramped and cluttered, so it works out for him. he got a bit lonely after he and his siblings went their own separate ways again, but they try to touch base every once in a while. out of the three, manic's life is the least eventful by a pretty significant margin

while he hasn't revealed anything yet (and isn't planning to), scourge, not from this dimension, has gone through an earth-shattering event that's significantly changed his demeanor compared to canon. he's still abrasive, reckless, and crude, but seems to have grown at least a fraction of a conscience, "getting soft," as he would put it. the real question is... what kind of event could have possibly made him change like that?

kingpin, also not from this dimension, is a young hedgehog (about cream and charmy's age) that bonded with scourge somewhere between scourge's canon event and when he met manic. though he was considered a pest at first, a worn-down scourge eventually caved in, unofficially "adopting" the little guy and bringing him along for the ride. kingpin doesn't talk much, but he likes to draw and will show up with the boys from time to time

manic met scourge (and kingpin) relatively recently. scourge won't go into where he came from or what he was doing before they met, but manic let scourge crash on his couch, one thing led to another, and now they're roommates. manic appreciates the company, and scourge... he gets free food and warm place to sleep, which is more than enough for him (he'd never admit it, but the friendship is pretty nice, too)

sometimes scourge will disappear with little to no warning, leaving kingpin with manic. he usually comes back a few days later, looking way more tired than he did before he left. like a lot of other things, he refuses to talk about where he was or what he was doing, leaving manic in the dark - strange and slightly concerning, but technically harmless

The babylon rouges are kinda like freelance theives, right? what if they met Manic when he was younger?

More rambling under the cut lol

Ok so like picture this, Ferrell (Manic’s foster dad) is dealing with the rouges. (Probably trading/selling stolen goods, as one does) and while he’s talking to one of them, Manic is enthralled with this random busted up extreme gear they had laying around. Ferrell is feeling generous so he haggles the price low enough to get it for Manic. That could be a lil explanation as to why manic has a hoverboard, and it’s also a way to explain how he became the resident mechanic!

I don’t know much about the Babylon rouges, but I do know they care a lot about Babylonian history and extreme gear racing. so it could be very ooc of them to let some random kid have even an old broken one, but at the very least Manic could have stolen it lol.

I just love the idea of manic and the rouges having some kind of unspoken alliance because of their similar histories, and I’ll totally be trying to learn a bit more about riders and the other stuff theyre in!!
