Perth’s crossover kings Bounty Hunter are coming in hot with two revisited tracks. We had a quick chat with the lads to touch on this blast from the past and what is in store for the future..
Hey boys! So we first heard these tracks a couple of years ago, why did you decided to revisit them?
Tom: It’s been about a year since our last release and we are itching to write and record with the new line up so we thought it would be fun to get a sample with a new singer and it lets people we know we are still alive and working on things.
How did you guys come about getting Dec on vocals - and Dec how’ve you settled into the Bounty Hunter family?
Tom: Dec and I have been good friends since high school playing in bands I wont name and have kept in contact. We unfortunately lost our second singer and I knew Dec had some pipes, knowledge of the style we were going for and is also a good friend of a couple of the other guys in the band.
Dec: It’s been great, man. I really couldn’t have asked for a smoother transition into a new band. I’ve known the guys through years of gigging in various bands, and they’ve all been super welcoming!
We still get those thrash/metal vibes on these tracks only this time they’re revamped with some really well-done hardcore vocals. Tom, has the vocal change-up effected the way you write music?
Tom: Too be honest the vocal style wont really change the way I write music but Dec’s versatility is definitely encouraging me to push for a heavier, more aggressive approach.
What kind of bands influence you the most when writing for Bounty Hunter - and Dec what were your vocal influences when tackling the songs?
Tom: It’s strange I usually become obsessed with an album or an artist so some of our songs are like soundtracks to certain periods of time were I was digging a band. For example I was listening to a lot Motorhead when I wrote Guerrilla. Authentic bands influence me most when writing for bounty hunter. Bands trim the fat, make solid music and stay away from boring music that just so happens to be the flavour of the month. Dec: I didn’t necessarily have any influences going into the vocal booth. To be honest, I kind of just got in there and went for it. Yelling as loud as I could for as long as I could. My only objective was to try and switch it up from their old vocalist(s) a little bit, but still have the vocals flow well with the riffs.
Tell us about the lyrical inspiration for these tracks, who wrote them? And also what kind of content can we look forward to for the next release?
Tom: The lyrics were written by myself and a previous member. For my part, I wrote a fair chunk of guerrilla and I got the inspiration from a vice documentary on cannibal warlords in Liberia.
Dec: Tom and I have been going over a few ideas, but nothing really set in stone at this point. Tom wrote a good majority of the lyrics for the last releases, so it’ll most likely be a joint effort this time around. Lyrically, I wouldn’t mind exploring some darker themes.
I can tell these tracks are only taste of what’s to come! What can we expect from you guys in the future?
Tom: I really want to push to start recording for another record in the next few months. You should probably expect to hear more obnoxious riffs and guitar solos. I have been really working with Cam on broadening our songwriting skills so maybe look forward to hearing something out of the ordinary.
