Not having a mobile phone is a little strange, but not entirely unheard of. Basil had spent the majority of their life living completely technology free, and it was only in the last few years that they had integrated themself into the world and learnt about things like smartphones and social media. It was a lot to take in, but they had adapted. Blinking over at the other person, they kinda give a little pause for thought, considering them. “They’re kind of frivolous anyway – not really a necessity. At least not most of the time. Convenient, though, and they can help keep you safe in a pinch.” Basil shrugs. “I prefer to not be subtle, personally. At least in most ways.”

             sawyer was forcibly REMOVED from the cultist survivalism compound they were raised in only six months ago. life in the real world has been culture shock at it’s best, mostly because NO ONE seemed to act the way the people they’d grown up around did. ‘ i don’t trust technology. ’ which is true enough - the distrust is ingrained in their system right now. internet, cell phones - even electronic locks that open with a keycard. they don’t like them. ‘ social cues are hard for me to pick up on. it’s easier for me to communicate when people are forward. ’ they like the other already, though - they’re calm and a generally comforting presence. sawyer can appreciate that. ‘ it feels like some of these people are speaking in code. i feel so stupid sometimes. ’

their CELLULAR phones, honestly how cute was that, it made him feel a little bit better about his age. however, their DISPLEASURED expression causes carter to keep it a little less than sarcastic.  “  some  people  are  really  attached  t’electrics,  y’can’t  take  it  personally….”  a  pause,  “  I  would’ve  taken  the  phone  and  threw  it  into  the  lake.  “

             ‘ they shouldn’t be. ’ their tone is still annoyed, INDIGNANT. ‘ they miss everything around them. what happens if there’s an emergency and they’re too busy looking at their phone to properly handle it ? that’s not even to mention the fact that they BLINDLY TRUST whatever information it gives. ’ they shake their head a little. ‘ i wanted to. but i don’t make enough money to replace it. ’

“Well, not everyone likes human interaction.” Peyton says as he shrugs his shoulders a little. He was sometimes like that, though it really depended on the day. “It also could have been an emergency text that they had to answer. Or maybe they just wanted to be polite and not tell you that?”

          ‘ that’s no excuse to be rude. they could just tell me they didn’t want me speaking to them. i don’t understand why people think i would take offense to that, ’ they frown. ‘ there’s no such thing as an emergency text. a phone call, MAYBE, but text messages are easier to ignore or forget about. ’ then again, they don’t even have a phone, so they might just be talking out of their ass, here.

Lifting their shoulders in a slight shrug, Basil puffs their cheeks out a bit, turning their head to look at the other person in partial consideration. “Because no one ever says what they fuckin’ mean, y’know? It’s all about the subtleties, the small things and the details. They want you to take a hint, but they won’t tell you. It’s stupid.” Basil is a little bitter about the entire story too, truthfully. They find it easy to empathise with others, and they tend to exercise that ability a bit too liberally. “I barely use my phone even when I’m not out here…” That’s more just a stray thought than an actual contribution to the conversation, but oh well.

             ‘ i’m not very good with subtleties. ’ which is the truth if they’ve ever spoken it. frown curves their lips & furrows their brow slightly - back in the compound, bluntness was emphasized. required, really. the members were not believers in wasting breath, & that’s how sawyer was raised, as well. ‘ i agree, though. it’s stupid. ’ a pause before they offer up a piece of information that seems to startle most people, ‘ i don’t have a phone. not a cellular, at least. ’

“They were probably to caught up in their social life to be listening to you.” Bailey said as she shrugged her shoulders. She wasn’t quite sure what else she should really tell the them. “Maybe they aren’t an adventurous type person.” 

            sawyer frowns a little - squints at the tiny blonde. unimpressed. ‘ social lives happen when people are social. it is not social to ignore a person who is talking to your face. it’s rude. ’ even they know THAT. ‘ you don’t have to be adventurous to speak to someone. i don’t consider myself to be adventurous but here i am, speaking to you. ’

“I guess some habits are hard to BREAK, even when you have all these amazing things to do.” Desirae stated first, glancing at the other. “Of course I’m probably guilty of this just a little, only cause I’ve just been taking a few snaps of my time here & with friends. That could be the case for others as well, as for the person you’re talking about I’m not sure, either it was something important or they’re just RUDE.” 

              ‘ it sounds like a stupid habit to make. ’ maybe they’re a little BITTER, but they’re not being dishonest, at any rate. why constantly check a screen when there are more productive things to be doing ? they pause their grumbling, though, and listen to what the girl has to say. ‘ snaps ? as in photographs ? that i can sort of understand. within reason, of course. preserving the moment is important to some people. ’ sawyer’s never really had an opportunity to be a photo person, but they think they’d very much like to have photos in their bare apartment someday. ‘ it felt rude. but i’m not the best at social cues. ’

          eyebrows furrow slightly, confusion written on their features. ‘ .....what is coachella ? ’ they’re not EMBARRASSED, just curious. there’s a lot they don’t know, they’ve realized. ‘ liquor ? how will being drunk help you survive ? if anything, i’d assume it was the opposite. ’

            ‘ people are on their cellular phones. ’ sawyer turns to the other, confusion and ANNOYANCE evident on their features. ‘ there are things to do. there’s swimming, and hiking, and cave diving. so why ? earlier i was speaking to someone and they started typing. while i was speaking. i don’t understand. if i was boring them, why didn’t they just say so ? ’

you are thinking about the place that hurt you and how big it is and how far away it is and how all you want to do is go back there but in actuality you’d rather kill someone, or yourself, although that’s no big loss. your body’s a bad omen and wants anything but this, so you keep giving it the same thing, immersion turned sour and still hoping for something to fix it. you’re still thinking about that place and a girl’s standing there saying don’t look back don’t look back but you’ve already done it and your mind is shot pool balls and when they stop moving you can’t bring yourself to care anymore.
