“Oh, so the thirst is your doing? That’s all you? Okay, I see. Noted. What would I do without you here?” The half-smile he throws her way is too damn smug. “Wouldn’t be Elswood School without Elswood Mandated Hivemind Ed.” With the way this town operates, every day that he goes without being struck down or locked up by the (Wo)Men Behind The Curtain is a motherfucking miracle. He talks way too much shit and is far too paranoid. Maybe all the philanthropy balances it out.

Ashe lets out a little chuckle when Laila mentions her not-so-secret crush. “He did, actually. He’s planning on proposing and he asked for me to give you two my blessing. Said he wants a spring wedding.”

“You’d die. It’s not just you though, everyone needs me around to survive this life. I’m just special like that.” The smile she throws back at him is a complete and total mirror of the one on his face. Ashe and Laila looked nothing alike, but after two minutes of listening to them talk or even looking at their shared facial expressions -- it wasn’t hard to tell they were siblings. She often times got in trouble all throughout high school for making a look that was a little too similar to her older brother. “What you see is what you get, I guess. I spend most of the time trying to figure out what the fuck is going on in some of these books people recommend me on instagram.”

If you look closely, you can see the hearts in her eyes. “That is so wild. I have always wanted a Spring wedding. How does he know me so well? Dad would probably fight you though? Can you beat him? He can see the future. You tried to sneak out once and he knew about it. Met you at the window. Could you even fight him?”

He had been hanging out with the crew, telling them that he needed to get going if he wanted to pick up Laila on time, but every time his ass rose a motherfucking INCH off Kurtis’ beat up couch, something new was happening that he didn’t want to miss. ‘A couple more minutes’ happened more than a couple times.

“I’m not late it’s only…” he pulls out that good old Elswood issued phone and checks the time. Well, fuck him. “…I’m not late enough for you to be tellin’ me I’m late…and that’s impossible. I’m irresistible.” He smiles, pockets the phone and wraps an arm around her shoulder. “Whatcha learn today? Y’all start on the alphabet yet or are you still workin your way through colors n’ shapes?”

She has to admit that this a nice change of a pace from James -- not that she doesn’t love her dad, she does, but there is something about Ashe that is nice in its own way. For Laila’s own benefit, she pulls out her phone and glances down at the time before rolling her eyes. Ashe being late is a custom at this point, nobody is surprised when he shows up to an event at least thirty minutes. James still has hope though, which she supposes is a good thing.

“You’re late enough, which means I can tell you all I want.” She rolls her eyes at the arm on her shoulder but does nothing to move it. “Who lied and told you that? They think you’re cool because of me, just like everyone else.” What did she learn in school today? Did anyone actually learn anything during their senior year? “The usual. Power control and history, which I guess go together. What about you? You spent time with the other loser boys? Did Bryce ask about me?”

“Maybe…pegasus just grow up like that? Aren’t there some animals that just - leave the nest forever at a young age? They do come back to visit sometimes, though, so that’s good?” Luna tries to be optimistic, because she really seems own about this, but her advice abilities are pretty limited. She tucked her lip between her teeth quickly to state off a chuckle, the crooked smile on her face bitten back. “Um - can you bribe it? With sugar cubes? People do that in movies with horses…they’re similar, right?” Luna lifted a shoulder in a lazy shrug - she didn’t know much about pegasuses (pegasus? pegasi?), but they were basically horses with wings, in theory.

“See, I’d go with your theory, which I think is a nice theory by the way, but he came out the book fully grown.” She reaches into her bag and pulls out the book that once housed that massive creature. Laila could count on one hand the pegasus had actually come to visit her. Of course, she’d never actually used sugar cubes before. It was a good idea, so she turned the book to page sixty-two and materialized a few sugar cubes. “Let’s see if your idea works.” She gathered a few of the cubes up in her before sprinkling them along the ground. “I probably shouldn’t spend my time waiting for a fictional creature to come home, but it’s nice knowing he is alive sometimes.”

James had sent her a text message during lunch to let her know that Ashe would be picking her up today. Of course, he didn’t have to pick her up -- she was more than capable of getting home by herself. Her dad (there wasn’t a damn thing foster about him) had always thought it important for him to be there after school, to talk to her, to ask about her day, to just be present. In the few moments that he couldn’t be there, (this was number three in all the years he’d been taking care of her) he would send Ashe instead. This was always annoying because a lot of the girls (and boys, he’d just never admit it) seemed super into him. Which she didn’t get -- it was just Ashe? The one that snored too loud and always dared her to the most stupid shit. He totally wasn’t her best friend or anything, just her regular older brother.

“You’re late,” she starts fresh out the gate and leaves her friends behind to greet Ashe. “Let’s get out here before all my friends start making heart eyes at you.”

“If you wanted to give me food, I’d come see you every day.” Eun-Bi’s gaze flicked up from her work to Laila and her book, and then back down to the seeds she was coaxing onto a wet towel. “I’ll even call you mom if you’d like.”

Laila opened her mouth to respond and decided to bite into her carrot first. She chewed it slowly because it gave her the time she needed to think of a proper response. “Not that I’m not grateful or whatever, but how do you see a flying horse shooting through the sky in town and react this calmly? I get people have powers, but a pegasus just shot over your head and you’re acting like that is just regular degular.”

Luna had seen a lot in Elswood - from people disappearing into thin air to people turning into animals right before her eyes. She’d never seen a pegasus, though. “Yeah…” she hummed absentmindedly, nodding along as the stranger bit into a carrot and nonchalantly watched the mystical horse fly away. “Um…it does seem a bit….rude?,” Luna agreed, a frown on her face, her eyes still trained on the sky until the pegasus was gone. It seemed rude to just walk away after that, and she shifted her backpack as she thought of something to say. “Have you tried….talking to them about it?” That was probably a stupid question, and Luna winced the second it was out of her mouth, but she wasn’t sure what to say to someone lamenting the lack of visits from the creature they brought into existence - there was sort of no protocol.

“I know, right? Who doesn’t speak to the person that brought them to life for long periods of time? It’s just... Ridiculous.” She crunches away at another carrot and looked into the sky. Laila had been the perfect mother to the flying horse when it first popped out of her storybook. James had almost had a heart attack though -- he was used to her making things appear, but a whole flying horse in the house was different. “I have. Once, it was on top of the pizza shop because I think it really likes my dad or pizza? One of the two. I walk up and I’m all smiles because it is essentially my kid and I want to check in. It just flies off. Leaves me standing there looking like my name is boo-boo the fool.”

“You’d think that if you created a horse, they would come see you every once in a while.” She could hear it overhead and looked up from her book just in time to see the legendary Pegasus that hovered over Elswood shoot through the sky. Laila bit into a carrot and squinted up as it zoomed off into the distance. “I bought that thing to life and I’ve seen it twice in the last five years? Not a hey mom how are you or even like some free flights to the salon. It just floats around and grabs some food like I don’t even exist. How disrespectful is that?”

Headcanon 001

As a child, Laila was obsessed with the idea of being a princess. Every book she read her developmental years were centered around the idea of a young girl finding her prince charming and living together in a huge castle. She loved that idea so much that one day while reading she accidentally turned her house into a miniature castle complete with a white horse (her father’s car) and a large moat. Under normal circumstances, there might have been some push back, but who could really say no to a little girl that just wanted to be a princess?
