This post has blown up to an insane degree that I never anticipated so here’s some clarifying info:

The account in question was an Instagram account, this was back in 2018 when artists could have their NSFW alts on Instagram without getting deleted, however I don’t think these wire sculptures would have gotten flagged for nudity anyway. He has since deleted the account (I’m assuming, because I definitely didn’t unfollow him). I can’t track it down again because I never even got this guy’s name, and I don’t think the username even incorporated his real name. I asked some of the other dudes he used to hang with (about a main account, I didn’t mention the dragon furry one cuz they’re all straight dudes and I didn’t know if they knew about it) and they said that he doesn’t really use socials anymore as far as they know.

Also “massive” dragon furries is a bit misleading on my part, I just meant they had huge inflated muscles. The largest sculpture was probably as tall as a toaster.

I don’t know if you ever mentioned this but did you go to school for art? I’m about to go to college to major in but it’s a little intimidating, advice even if you did or didn’t would be much appreciated :).

Thank you! And yea I did, in a roundabout sort of way. I went to SCAD for animation right out of high school, dropped out after a year, went to community college for animation and dropped out again, moved to the city until I ran out of money, tried community college again for marine biology (I still don’t fully understand this choice) failed at that, and pivoted to fine art. I just got my associates degree in art and now I’m transferring to Rutgers for art history (I was not accepted into mason gross, the Rutgers art school). Despite all that I still definitely recommend it. There are very few opportunities to surround yourself with art as completely as you’ll be able to in an art school. Some of the most valuable skills I’ve learned have come from college art classes I wasn’t even thrilled about taking, like oil painting for example. If art is something you’re truly passionate about, you’ll do fine 👍. You’ll also be shocked at the amount of students who aren’t passionate about art at all, but somehow still do fine.

I try not to be snobby about this stuff but omg how do you get to be on a panel of judges for a residency and even consider saying something like "my main critique is I wish the artist had explained this work to me with their words". There are some genuinely incurious ass motherfuckers out there. I follow you because your work isn't just funny comics, it's narrative and engrossing and original. I get sucked into the little details and I am consistently surprised by (and jealous of) your capacity to imagine the bizzare/fantastic and draw it dynamically. Every time I go outside I hope to see the sort of things you draw. Occasionally I do--but I have to look very closely.

Hope you get the residency of your dreams and the people there are sharp enough to tear your work into little pieces, constructively.
