i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.

there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.

anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.

A Better World - create an alternate history timeline

Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game

Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet

Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games

Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones

Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy

ZenGM - simulate sports

Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi

IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)

Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface

The Cafe & Diner - mystery game

The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game

Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions

Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game

Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game

Miniconomy - player driven economy game

Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes

BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators

if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.

trying to develop my first game but with an extremely limited skillset so instead of going "godot, gamemaker, renpy, or rpgmaker?" I went "scratch, google slides, notion, or html/css?" and landed on html

lowk now that I think about it, it's kinda crazy that I can make websites. no back end, sure, but omg I made something colorful and interactive and functional with nothing but my brain and my own two hands. (and a laptop and a web host but shhh)

trying to trace sources for all the graphics on my website and WOW this is hard 😭😭 I really wish I had done this from the beginning, bc I feel really bad that I have a lot of uncredited work laying on my website but it's also really difficult to track down some of them since I got them from other people's hoards or from random tumblr posts that didn't credit them 😭 like I'm totally chill w my graphics being shared without credit but I HIGHLY doubt everyone in my entire collection was, so I wanna try and fix it but there are a lot to go through 😔💔

I'm prone to wandering through my house, exploring all the corners I've already seen, and pacing on the very tiles I grew up treading. Why do I explore the places I already know? Do I fear the world so intensely that I can't imagine living in it? Why do I cage myself?

I don't want to.

I want to go outside and walk until my feet blister and my calves ache. I want to play music to strangers just to see who listens. I want to learn to skate and make friends who already know how to. I want to leave when it's dark, and come back with souvenirs but no explanations. I want to live somewhere where the air is comfortably cool year-round. I want to live independently and enjoy the freedom it brings. I want to live.

it's not great by any means but it's pretty much my first time drawing since art fight last year, so it's decent by that margin imo :3

he looks a little plain rn but that's bc I wasn't great at art BEFORE taking a several month-long break. Also, I gotta do some research so I can give him cooler clothes. anyways. this is Nikolaos, aka Niko ^^

he's my EPIC: The Musical OC, one of the 600 men :'D specifically, he's the youngest! (he does not replace Elpenor, he's just younger than him, being 20 at the beginning of EPIC aka 10 at the beginning of the war.) also just for funsies, he's half water nymph, but he's passably human 😭 anyways, I made him bc he's the pov for the fansong I threw together, I'm still making the video for the final version, but the instrumental is here if anyone wants to hear it :3
