vore is such a fascinating case study on content moderation - specifically, why things slip through at scale - since it's all about intent

if you try to hide it with a simple keyword heuristic, you inevitably end up censoring Jonah and the Whale

at scale, intent is impossible - not hard, literally impossible - to detect, since intent is not a property of the work, it's a property of the author, and a property of the reader, neither of which any content moderation system, including an AI, is or ever can be

but even then, not all vore content within the community is even sexual! some enjoy it platonically, or find comfort in the idea, or use it to cope with trauma, and all of that is both completely benign and only barely different from a genuinely sexual vore story - hell, any singular story is often both, only differing by their audience

it sits in a perfect grey area that makes moderation teams have to rethink what they thought they knew about content moderation - it causes any lazy assumptions a less knowledgeable team may make to fall flat on their faces, exposes the fact that the world is huge and humans are messy, and forces them to confront the question of "what are you actually moderating against?", which is a genuinely hard question with no perfect answer

and these problems exist for everything - stories about sexual abuse or drugs, medical diagrams, political speech, and much much more - but vore specifically brings up every snag you can run into at once, in a way that almost nothing else does, and that makes it impossible to ignore
