Mogar and Vav! (A redraw of this lovely picture)
“We think you need a haircut.”
i miss this bear
“I’m sure he’d be so excited by that idea. But let’s uh. Start with the trees here at the park. They’re shorter. He can work his way up to the ones in the woods. If he argues just tell him it was your idea. He’ll listen then.” he hums, reaching down to lightly rub at his healing leg.
“…Yeah. So am I. It was kind of scary not being able to use it. I’m so used to running around and climbing on shit. Didn’t know what to do with myself.” he sighs, shaking his head. “It still hurts when I put a lot of weight on it but. It’s getting there.”
“Oh, definitely,” he agrees without hesitation. “Mogar thinks you both should start small,” he shoots Xray a mildly amused look, humored by the fact the other hero is focusing only on Vav’s ability to climb. Despite having just established his own weak points on that level.
Humming softly he looks away, expression thoughtful. “Mogar knows how it feels,” his voice is a little faint, remembering with sharp pangs the panic and helplessness he had felt without Mother. Giving himself a shake he refocuses on Xray, deciding that is not a good train of thought to go down right now. “Mogar is sure the Green One will recover. Be back to normal -- parkour. Very soon.”
He snorts, leaning back and glancing back at him. He’s much calmer now. Relaxed even. And it shows in his expression and posture. “To be fair, Vav hasn’t ever had to really climb during our escapades. We usually have a ladder. And I’m usually the one climbing it. But he tries.” There’s a fondness in his voice that’s unmistakable.
“Both feet on the ground would be wonderful. Especially with my leg still healing. I’m finally to the point I can walk a bit without the crutch. Don’t want to risk fucking that up.”
As Mogar registers the tension beginning to leave Xray’s body he follows suit, growing steadily more relaxed. He remains perched on the back of the bench but his shoulders slump more, easing into a more casual posture. “Mogar is not surprised,” he admits with humor clear in his voice, claws flexing against the wood of his perch. “Perhaps we should train him. Climbing is an important skill.”
“Oh, yes, that is. Good point,” he acknowledges, shooting Xray’s injured leg a slightly wary glance. “Mogar is glad the Green One is almost healed,” he murmurs, because he is. Seeing a herdmate injured is terrible.
He can see the confusion on Mogar’s face. That pulls a laugh from him, head shaking slowly in disbelief. He was almost certain calling people a dick was just something everyone knew. But then again Mogar had grown up in the woods. Maybe that wasn’t something animals also called one another. Could Mogar talk to animals…? That would be weird. But also not surprising. Oh wait shit he’s getting off track-
“Yeah! Yeah that uh. I’d be okay with that. We can hang out or something sometime when I’m back. And I don’t mean the kind of hanging out you did with Vav. I’m pretty good at climbing trees but even I have a limit. I mean like. Go on patrol together or just. Take a walk. Hell. We could even just sit here or something.”
The laugh earns a squint and a huff, but the corner of his mouth twitches for a moment. It slowly fades as he notices Xray seeming to grow more and more lost in thought, tipping his head to the side as he considers. Wonders what the other is thinking. Wonders if he’d understand, even if he knew what it was. Decides he probably wouldn’t.
A laugh escapes him - it’s short and abrupt and ends as quickly as it started. “The Blue One was not very good at hanging either,” he admits with a shake of his head, eyes sparkling with mirth. “Mogar is fine doing things that involve keeping both feet on the ground. Seems safer.”
Oh god damn it. That sure was some serious sentiment tossed his way just now. And he can feel his cheeks lighting up a bit, showing his embarrassment like a neon sign. Vav is really the only one who says stuff like that to him so hearing it come from anyone else, especially someone like Mogar, is kind of a shocker.
“Yeah. Don’t mention it.” he mutters, rubbing the back of his neck and letting his gaze shoot up to the sky. “…I know I can be kind of a dick sometimes. And I don’t really. Y’know. Act all buddy buddy with you. But. I respect you too. You’re pretty cool. We’re uh. We’re buds.”
“The Green One is not -- what?“ His forehead furrows in bewilderment. Did Xray just call himself a dick? He doesn’t resemble anything of the sort! After a few moments of utter confusion and desperate attempts to find context, he simply gives up on that train of thought entirely. Must be another one of those bizarre city folk things he doesn’t understand.
“Mogar understands,” and this time he does, giving a sharp shrug. “He does not act very buddy buddy either. That seems to be the Blue Ones strong point,” he shoots Xray a small grin, then rolls his shoulders. “But. Mogar is glad we are herdmates. He would like to - know the Green One better. Later. When we have time.”
He goes quiet for a few moments, eyes a bit fogged with thought as his fingers drum against the seat of the bench. “…Would. It make you feel better if I stayed in contact with you too?” he finally says, quietly. He then quickly raises his hands, palms out. “I mean! It’s. Kind of obvious that I should anyway. I mean you’re part of the team now. But. I thought it might. I don’t know.”
He sighs, stopping to rub at his face a bit awkwardly. “I thought. it might, y’know. Be kind of important to throw it out there verbally. That I’m thinking of your. Feelings here and everything. And asking.”
Mogar blinks at the suggestion, not sure how that would help make him feel better at all. Being contacted would not make Xray any less alone with the Mad King - after a moment of consideration, he realizes the intent meant behind the offer. “Yes, Mogar would like that,” he responds gently, watching Xray’s nervous fidgeting out of the corner of his eye.
Finally he smiles, small but genuine. “Mogar appreciates the Green Ones attempts to reassure him,” he acknowledges with a small amused shake of his head. “Mogar - knows we are not very close. But he does care about the Green One. And respects him, very much,” he admits gently. “He would like to know he is safe.”
The mention of the trip immediately has him tensing Every part of him is ready for an argument. But then Mogar is reassuring him he’s not going to argue it any longer and he let’s out a long exhale of breath in relief. He really didn’t feel like arguing about it anymore.
“…Thank you. I. Understand why you and Vav are against it. Just. Let me say that now. I don’t blame either of you. But at the same time I have to do this. It’s important to me that I do. And I have to listen to myself.” he says slowly, quietly.
The tension that takes over Xray’s body makes him feel relieved to be able to soothe it away. At the same time he feels a small prick of guilt for having contributed to the tension at all - he was hardly very rational about the entire subject. There’s no disguising how much he despises the Mad King, but he allowed his feelings to cloud his judgement.
“Mogar understands,” he responds, then frowns, “No he does not,” he admits, giving a small shake of his head. “But it is not up to him to understand,” he goes on with a shrug. “Mogar - hates the idea. He does not trust the Liar. But. He trusts the Green One. If he feels he must do this, Mogar will support him.”
“No big deal.” he breathes out, rolling his shoulders to try and relax a bit more as he walks over to claim his usual seat on the bench. Being here kind of helps really. And he latches onto that. Onto the familiar view and the feel of the wind brushing over him. He visibly relaxes, giving a soft breath as he leans back and tilts his head to look at Mogar.
“So what is it you wanted to talk about? Everything alright?”
Mogar exhales softly through his nose and directs his gaze elsewhere, rummaging through all the thoughts buzzing in his head. This is a conversation he’s been thinking about for a long time now, and he just hopes all the words don’t desert him at the last moment. “Mogar - wishes to discuss. The trip,” he finally begins slowly, words coming out careful as he focuses on trying to choose the right ones.
“The one the Green One is taking. To see the Liar,” he elaborates, pausing a moment. “Mogar is not going to discourage him. He apologizes for his harsh words from before.”
Holy shit he’s nervous. He and Mogar haven’t exactly had best bud alone time. Or any alone time for that matter. And they definitely didn’t sit down and have discussions of any kind. So hearing that Mogar not only wants to see him, but wants to see and talk to him alone? Well it’s a shock. And he can feel the bit of anxiousness gnawing away in his stomach and throat.
It doesn’t take long for him to reach the bench. His legs know the path all on their own by now and he’s almost sure he could walk here in his sleep.
When he sees Mogar he clears his throat, giving a small awkward wave.
It’s obvious at first glance how incredibly nervous Xray is right now - Mogar feels a small wash of exasperation. He is painfully aware of the fact the two of them are not nearly as close to each other as they both are separately to Vav; which is fine, for the most part. Vav and Xray have a very special thing Mogar would never dream of trespassing upon.
But Xray is still a part of his herd, and he regrets the fact that he has yet to prove that the other has nothing to fear from him. Giving himself a small shake he raises his own hand to mimic the wave, acknowledging it for the gesture of greeting that it is.
“Hello Green One - Mogar appreciates you seeing him.”
Even after Xray has agreed to meet him Mogar hesitates, pacing back and forth across the tree house. The past few days have been spent in deep thought, with assistance from the exasperated yet accepting Kazooie. She still thinks it’s a completely harebrained idea - Mogar has to agree. But it’s not his idea in the end, and so he resigns himself to simply accepting it for what it is. For all his issues with the Liar, his loyalties to Xray run deep, and he won’t risk harming the fragile connection they’ve managed to built.
With that in mind he clambers out the window of his nest, stalking his way into the city. By now he’s become a rather familiar site to the city folk, given how consistently he’s been patrolling. So he manages to make it to the bench with only a few spare glances, perching on the back of it as he waits.

Oh. Well. I can meet you somewhere..?
Would the Green Ones bench be suitable?
Hm? Uh. Yeah. Yeah that’d be alright. I have time right now, so.
Mogar would prefer -- private talk. If possible.
If the Green One has time, Mogar wishes to speak before he leaves.

A King’s Welcome ♔ Closed
“Yes, a souvenir.”
Of course, there had to be one word that the Mad King couldn’t catch coming out of his mouth, despite efforts to stick to a smaller vocabulary. It was easier said than done, it turned out. Still, Mogar’s habit of repeating what he doesn’t understand is a helpful one, at the very least – and, even if he doesn’t comprehend what he hears, it shows he is listening.
He is listening, and he is learning – and though that active intelligence is a double-edged sword in the Mad King’s hands, for now, it is an admirable trait.
“A… keepsake, of sorts. A treasure you bring back from a new place, to show you went there, and remind you of the good time you had,” the Mad King explains, seeming pleased with himself by the end of it. He’d challenge anyone to come up with a better dictionary definition than that off the top of their head. It at least proves it shouldn’t be much trouble for him to keep educating his guest.
At least in vocabulary, it seems. In the sciences… that seems a touch more difficult. The Mad King levels his gaze back to Mogar, and releases a thoughtful hum, one hand going to gently scratch at the stubble on his chin.
What can he show his guest, to make him more comfortable with him – to effectively manufacture a bond of trust, from Mogar to him? When all the ‘good work’ Monarch Labs is doing doesn’t interest him, what can be done?
And, perhaps more importantly – does Mogar, with his one track mind and singular goal, even care?
It seems like that might be a question for the king to puzzle over for a little longer yet.
“Well,” he eventually settles on, casting Mogar another small, friendly smile, with that same little glint in his eye, “maybe you’ll enjoy the view from the top, then.
“Of course, for that, we’ll have to go back into the elevator. If you need another moment, just to prepare yourself, I completely understand.”
Since Mogar didn’t expect the Mad King to acknowledge his unspoken question, he is pleasantly surprised when the other makes efforts to explain the origin of the foreign word.
In terms the bear man can understand, no less. That much of the Mad King’s behavior is deeply appreciated, for all a majority of it just aids to confuse him. Few would have the patience to try and clear things up, as Mogar has had the misfortune of learning several times since he began mingling with the city folk.
Most just prefer to shout angrily or flash bright lights in his eyes. City folk are strange and confusing, and he can’t help but enjoy the far calmer nature the Mad King offers.
“Mogar has a few of those,” he comments almost a bit absently when he reflects on the concept of ‘souvenirs’. He supposes his pelt would be considered such a thing, even if he does not often associate it’s retrieval with ‘good times’. Some part of him wants to ask if it would still fit, but that would require explaining it’s origins and he’s fairly sure he doesn’t have the words for that. “Not many, though,” he rarely finds himself in a position to collect much of anything except food.
The strange folded paper will be a nice addition to his small collection, no doubt.
While he waits for the Mad King to make a decision he absently fiddles with the fur of his gloves, occasionally shooting distrustful glances towards the activity still whirling along on either side of them. For the most part he keeps his eyes focused on the Mad King, however. The other moves far slower and far less chaotically, and as such is much easier to track.
When the fond smile is back in place and the Mad King is speaking he instantly stands up straighter, snapping back to full attention. “The top?” he asks, wondering if they are going to the roof. He is fond of roofs, they offer good vantage points and countless escape routes.
Though he visibly cringes when the elevator is brought back into play. The look he shoots towards the empty box is one of pure loathing, as if the elevator was some sort of rabid mammal that had taken a chunk out of his leg in a past life. For a moment he shuffles his feet restlessly against the ground, still making no sound despite the movement.
Finally he gives a sharp nod, upper lip curling slightly even as he begins stalking back towards the elevator. “Yes, fine. Mogar - knows what it is now,” or at least he knows what it does.
That will suffice.
