"The Yearling," Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings best-selling novel about a boy who learns to deal with life via a friendship with a young fawn, got the musical treatment in 1965. It lasted all of three performances, despite a score that was really very good: "Why Did I Choose You" was picked up by several artists and became something of a standard. The show started David Wayne, the original "Og" in Finian's Rainbow; Carmen Alvarez, who stood by for Chita Rivera in Bye Bye Birdie and replaced her in West Side Story; Carmen Matthews, a talented performer who could never get a hit, despite several dozen tries; and Delores Wilson, a replacement "Golde" and "Miss Hannigan". (Music by Michael Leonard, lyrics by Herb Martin, book by Herb Martin and Lore Noto.)
