All Bark

“ did you need some help with that? it looks like you’re having a bit of trouble. ”

It was a windy day. Usually Toris didn’t have any trouble with chores around the house, but with the current weather, the laundry he was trying to hang kept blowing away, forcing him to chase after it. Hearing the sound of someone’s voice, he paused in his chase, glancing up. “Oh– ah, y-yes! Yes, please, that’d be really great– um–” He gestured to some of the clothes. “If you could help me gather this up, I’d be very grateful.”

“Sorry if sounds rude but what type of creature are you? I’m just curious. I’m seen a few different ones but you don’t look like any of them I’ve seen. I,myself am part elf.” He pointed to his ears that were just slightly pointed. “I understand. I just thought I would offer, though if you need something else done while you work on that help, it’s no problem actually.”

Toris glanced at the other a bit curiously. “I’m a Lost One-- I come from the forest.” It was a bit surprising to meet someone who didn’t know what a Lost One was, but he supposed they were rare enough that if he hadn’t seen one before, he wouldn’t know. He shook his head slightly. “Thank you, but this is really all I need to do for now.”

“I didn’t mean to stare but you are rather fascinating to me. In a good way, I don’t think I’ve met anyone like you before.“ Antonio wanted to talk a bit more. "I can help you so you it’s not too much and I really don’t mind at all.”

Toris forced a small smile. “O-Oh. No, it’s fine, I’m used to stares at this point.” Those who knew him were used to his appearance, but new folk always needed a moment to gawk and wonder; not everyone had seen a Lost One before. “Ah... thank you, but that’s okay. I couldn’t ask someone I just met to help with something like this.”

"Nice antlers."

“Oh, I’m glad I didn’t just interrupt your saving the world.” he said, looking over at what the other was doing.

He then held out a hand. “I’m Gilbert, nice to meet you.”

Was that a joke or sarcasm? Either way, Toris gave a small chuckle, then shook the other’s hand. “Toris. It’s nice to meet you, Gilbert.”

Surprised, Toris glanced at the other with a light blush, laughing sheepishly. “Oh, ah… thank you. That’s very kind.” A flower or two sprouted in his hair.

He nodded and squinted out at the sandy colours of the city and sighed. It was hard to move around in the day and just as hard at night. He turned to the other after a moment with a smile. “You been gardening? Hope I didn’t distract you.”

Toris quickly shook his head. “Oh, no, you’re not distracting, I’m just doing a few extra chores.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “It’s nothing that needs to be done urgently.”

“ waffles or pancakes? ”

Toris hummed thoughtfully. “Well, we did just have waffles yesterday… so do how about pancakes today?”

“No, I didn’t mean to sound like bad news. Too early to speak clearly,” he stuffed some pancake in his mouth then took on an almost conspiratory tone. “But guess what? I’m an uncle now! She has a kid!”

“Oh!” Toris blinked, surprised. “I didn’t know she was-- oh, I suppose she must have adopted, then? That’s great for her!” He smiled softly. “When was this?”

“Just curious.” Mostly because he felt uncomfortable with standing next to someone and not saying anything. He only really wanted the shade.

“Anyway, I’m uh. Just waiting for the sun to be less intense.”

Toris had been outside working on the yard, and as it was a hot day, hadn’t thought much of the stranger standing in the shade. He was likely to take a break soon, too. He offered a small smile. “It is rather bright today, isn’t it?”

He gave him a grin. “Pretty flowers, too.” he said, leaning his back up against a wall. “You’re pretty far out, been here for a while?”

As he spoke, he fiddled with the bag tied to his waist along with his hood which he was able to pull down off of his head in the shade.

“Flowers? Oh--” Toris reached up to touch one of the newly blossoming flowers. “Oh, ha, yeah, that happens sometimes.”

He paused, watching the stranger curiously. “Yeah, for most of my life. Why do you ask?”

“It is very nice to meet you Toris.” Antonio studied the other for a moment something seemed different about him but wasn’t sure if he should ask to satisfy this curiosity of his.

Toris almost wanted to shrink under the other’s gaze. People often found his appearance a little strange, what with the bark-like skin and branch-like antlers after all. He was silent for a moment, smiling uncertainly. “Ah, well... thank you again for you help. I should, ah... really go and wash this again now.”

Feliks hummed to himself happily. It didn’t take long to cook; he plopped a plate of fresh pancakes in front of Toris and took his place right next to him, jumping right into today’s gossip. “Did you hear anything from Lena?”

Smiling, Toris gave Feliks a quiet thank you. The other’s question had him pausing before he could start eating his breakfast. “Lena? No, I haven’t heard from her. Did something come up?”

“Alright, pancakes.” He grabbed the pan and brought the already ready bowl of batter to the counter. It was a bit of a tradition for Łukasiewiczes to cook breakfast rather than having the servants do it. “You want any berries in them?”

Even if it was a tradition, Toris didn’t mind cooking for Feliks, but it seemed he was intent on cooking today. Resting his chin in his hand, Toris nodded. “Sure, that sounds good.”

“That might be the best solution. You don’t want to end up in a endless cycle of washing and hanging. That could be a pain the butt if you ask me. Oh I’m Antonio by the way.” He held his hand to him.

Toris sighed. “I don’t even want to think about that...”

When Antonio offered his hand, he smiled politely and shook it with his free hand. “Nice to meet you, Antonio, and thanks again for your help. I’m Toris.”

Toris blew a strand of hair that had come lose from his ponytail out of his face with a puff of breath, the basket of laundry tucked between his hip and his arm. “Maybe I’ll just wait until the wind dies down... I don’t want to have to do this again.”

“It seemed someone has angered the goddess of the winds.” He spoke as he ran to catch some of the articles of clothing. “I think that’s everything.” Running back now with an arm full of laundry.

“I wouldn’t be surprised...” Toris mumbled to himself as he started putting clothes back into his basket, holding it out to the other so he might put what he picked up in as well. “Thank you so much for your help,” he said with a sigh. “Guess I’ll have to rewash everything.” He forced a small, tired smile.
