Medium Format
This fortnight and a half, I have been working on the medium format rotation. I procured a Hasselblad and Holga camera and some 400 ISO film to take some pictures. The Hasselblad takes some time to focus on subjects and the Holga must be used in relative daylight. This makes this rotation somewhat challenging. I have been taking pictures around campus and plan to take photographs at the Middle School track meet later today.
Weekly Blog
This week, I took the photos I have taken over the last fortnight, and edited them and sent them off to my teacher to be placed on our school's Flickr site. It is very exciting to take pictures of an event and have the final products shared with the community. I also completed my presentation, which compares Dan Winters and James and Therese, both different types of photographers. I have also compiled my best pictures from the Dance Concert and printed them out to be displayed in the Student Center at our school.
My next rotation is medium format.
Event Photography
I continued my event photography/presentation/exhibit rotation last week. I photographed the Menlo International Fair and the Dance Concert Rehearsal. Photographing the International Fair was easy, as the subjects were not moving and there was generous lighting. However, at the Dance Concert, it was challenging to take pictures. There was minimal light, and at all times the subjects were moving. To compensate for this, I used a high ISO (1600-3200), which makes up for some of the lost light, but also makes the photos a bit grainy. I also had to shoot at a high shutter speed, because the subjects are moving. This led to a less-exposed photo. I had a lot of fun doing some of the most challenging photography I have ever done - moving subjects in a dark room. Here are some unedited pictures I took:
Last week in photography, I began the mixed bag rotation. It consists of photographing two Menlo events, researching two photographers and creating a presentation for the class, and creating an exhibit of past photography. I'm really looking forward to doing some event photography as well as learn about some of the modern photographers out there.
Digital Raw Rotation
I have decided to pursue the idea of night time photography. Nighttime photography works best when one uses long exposures, decently high apertures (f8.0+ for small lens) and low ISO values. All of these elements allow for a sharp photo during dark hours that yields a photo that looks like it was taken during the day. When combined with airplane paths, car light paths, water movements and even star paths, very interesting results are created.
I took the three photos below using decently low apertures (f2.6 or so, lens basically wide open), and the photos hurt a little because of it. But I did use 100 ISO for each picture. Most of the exposures were ~10-20 seconds. The two with lines are of an airplane traveling through the sky. The dots show that some of the airplane's lights were turning on and off at a constant rate. I am excited to take some more long exposure night photos.

The last four days in photography, I have been starting the Digital Raw rotation. My teacher provided me with a Pentax camera, some dark light filters, a charger, and tripod. I started out the first day by experimenting with Kelly in the darkroom, with long exposure light paintings. Below are some examples. I then, on day 2, took some long exposure pictures of a nearby fountain using the dark filters. I hope to take long exposures at night and end up with some pretty cool results! I’ll keep you guys posted.
The new iOS6 has a new, neat photography feature called Panorama. Native to the Camera app, one simply presses Options -> Panorama. The screen below appears, and the user pans the phone, while keeping the arrow in the application on the horizontal line to keep the camera steady while it captures the panorama. The iPhone automatically combines these images and makes a wide-angle picture. Below, I have some examples of Panoramas.
Alcatraz From Boat: This isn't a panorama, but while taking the boat back to San Francisco, I took a cool picture with my Iphone encompassing the entire island, the horizon and the wake of the boat.
Assembly Panorama: At an assembly, the day after I got my new iPhone, I tested out the Panorama effect and took a panorama at our high school Assembly.
Vista Panorama: Off 280, I took a panorama of the mountains near the Crystal Springs Reservoir.
Alcatraz Panorama: On the back side of Alcatraz, facing the North Bay, I took this Panorama that had a boat in it. I also added Clarify Effects from Camera+ to make it more clear.
iPhone Photography
We are nearing the final stretch of the third Advanced Photography rotation. I pursued iPhone photography for this rotation, using many photography apps including Camera+, Snapseed, Pic Grunger, Big Lens and Color Touch. I focused on Snapseed for the quick, high quality editing that it can produce. I also used the Oloclip during this rotation. It adds a Macro, Fisheye or Wide-angle lens to the iPhone camera. I used this mainly for the macro lens and close-up photos.
Here are a descriptions of the last four photos I posted to my blog.
Cactus: We as an advanced photography class took a trip to the Stanford Cactus Garden. We spent 15 minutes photographing as many cacti in different ways as we could. This photo was one of my favorites as in I used multiple apps to edit it. I used Color Touch to remove color from the background, and Snapseed to adjust contrast and brightness.
Bird + Bay Bridge: Over the weekend, I traveled to Alcatraz with my Chilean exchange student and took multiple photos of the surrounding San Francisco area, bridges and sky. I used Clarify in Camera+ to make this photo a little more interesting.
Flower: Midway through the rotation, people began asking other people to Semi-formal. Therefore, there were many flowers around campus to photograph. I used the Oloclip macro lens to take a close photo of a flower. There are many diverse colors in this image, and I didn't need to do any edits.
Lebron James (6) + Kobe Bryant (24): A couple weeks ago, I went to Los Angeles to watch the Lakers play the Heat. When both Lebron and Kobe Braynt were subbing in, I quickly took out my phone and took a photo of them. I used Big Lens to lower the depth of field and make Lebron and Kobe the center of the photo.
