The Canadian Lacrosse League (C-Lax) is pleased to announce six players have recently signed NLL contracts for the upcoming season. The Colorado Mammoth have re-signed alumni Mike Burke while also signing Geoff McNulty (Durham Turfdogs). Additionally, theGeorgia Swarm have signed netminder, Grant Crawley (Southwest Cyclops), the Buffalo Bandits have signed Corey Fowler (Niagara Lock Monsters), the Rochester Knighthawkshave signed Jake Crans (Southwest Cyclops), and the Toronto Rock have re-signed alumniSteve Fryer.

On Monday, September 28, 2015, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) hosted their 2015 draft at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre. Over the course of the evening, three C-Lax players were selected:

Doug Buchan (Niagara Lock Monsters) - Saskatchewan Rush

Thomas Hoggarth (Durham Turfdogs) - Georgia Swarm

John. St. John (Durham Turfdogs) - Rochester Knighthawks

Niagara Lock Monsters goaltender, Doug Buchan said, “Walking up to the stage was the most amazing feeling that I have ever experienced, it was exciting but also felt very rewarding that all the years I have played and worked has paid off. The whole experience of draft night was surreal and is going to be a memory that I will remember forever.”

Buchan was a rookie last season with the Niagara Lock Monsters appearing in three games and posting a 10.80 GAA and .740 SV%. “The experience that I gained from the C-Lax season was very valuable and taught me a lot.” Buchan said, “practicing with better shooters, adjusting to a faster game that I am use to at the junior level and most of all it helped me enter training camp with my Junior A team in mid-season form. This was my first opportunity to play winter lacrosse and it was a huge benefit to my development. Coming to a new team and starting at the bottom of the depth chart and having to prove myself at a higher level was great experience. Overall C-Lax was one of the reasons for my successful Junior A season and gave me valuable lessons that I am going to take into training camp with the Saskatchewan Rush.”

The New England Black Wolves have picked up Wenster Green and Mark White, both formerly of the Barrie Blizzard. These two were instrumental during the 2014 season that saw the Blizzard make the playoffs for the first time in team history. White spent last season on the Toronto Rock practice roster.

Barrie Blizzard Pick Up Important Road Win In Ohsweken

The Barrie Blizzard (2-2) used a strong second and third quarters to defeat the Ohsweken Demons (2-1) 9-7 on Friday night at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

In a quiet first quarter, the Demons would open the scoring with just under five minutes remaining when Dewey Porter would take a feed from Chris Attwood and bury it behind Barrie goaltender Angus Dineley. Blue Hill would follow that up just over a minute later and the Demons went into the second quarter up 2-0.

The Demons kept it on in the second opening the quarter just 45 seconds in when Travis Hill was left all alone in front of the Blizzard goal, quickly making it 3-0 for the Demons. Finally, with just over ten minutes remaining in the quarter, Barrie’s Mike Teeter would take a pass from Connor Latimer and get the Blizzard on the board. Barrie would go on to score three more in the quarter and find themselves leading 4-3 heading into half time.

The Blizzard would open the third with a goal from Mike Mawdsley, who took a great pass from AJ Masson. Michael Teeter would complete his hat-trick less than a minute later giving Barrie a 6-3 lead. Roger Vyse would get the Demons back on the scoresheet with twenty-five seconds left in the quarter, and the Blizzard would go into the final frame leading 6-4.

In the fourth, the Blizzard would open the quarter with a goal from Darryl Robertson, putting the Barrie up by three goals. The Demons would storm back with back to back goals from Roger Vyse and Josh Johnson; pulling the Demons back within one goal. However, the Blizzard were not shaken and Connor Latimer would roll off a screen, taking a pass from Mike Teeter and burying it behind Jake Henhawk. Brad Levick would add some insurance for Barrie three minutes later and the Blizzard would lead by three. Roger Vyse would add one final goal for the Demons with twenty seconds left but, the Blizzard would hold on for the 9-7 victory.

Barrie’s Mike Gillan Named Transition Player of the Week

The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) is pleased to announce its Players of the Week for week four of the 2015 season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Jesse Guerin – Durham Turfdogs – Guerin dominated this weekend netting a hat trick as well as five assists. He currently leads the Turfdogs in points with twelve in three games.

Honourable Mention: Mike Burke – Southwest Cyclops – Burke tallied two goals and seven assists for a total of nine points.

Defensive Player of the Week: Jay Preece – Southwest Cyclops – For the second week in a row, Preece receives Defensive Player of the Week. Preece came into the game in relief of injured Grant Crawley in the second quarter and allowed six goals, and only two in the second half.

Honourable Mention: Scott Gamble – Durham Turfdogs – Gamble was an aggressive asset on defense, assisting the Turfdogs to a win.

Transition Player of the Week: Mike Gillan – Barrie Blizzard – Gillan was instrumental in leading the Blizzard out of the defensive end; he also added a goal and an assist.

Honourable Mention: Travis Burton – Southwest Cyclops – Burton was a key player in the Cyclops’ victory. He tallied a goal and an assist.

Rookie of the Week: Dan Keane – Southwest Cyclops – For the second time in the 2015 season, Keane has been named Rookie of the Week. He scored three goals and added three assists against Niagara.

Honourable Mention: Thomas Hoggarth – Durham Turfdogs – On top of being strong defensively, Hoggarth also netted two goals for the Turfdogs.

Barrie Blizzard Unable to Hold of Turfdogs in Week 4

The Barrie Blizzard were unable to hold off the Turfdogs, falling to Durham 14-10. Both teams put up a valiant fight, but in the end it was the Turfdogs who claimed the win.

Barrie was quick to open the scoring when Jayson Crawford scored a mere nineteen seconds in. Scott Defranceso added back-to-back goals for the Blizzard making the score 3-0. Geoff McNulty would finally get the Turfdogs on the board almost five minutes into the quarter. Barrie added another goal from Mike Gillan, followed shortly by another Durham goal from Mcnulty and Josh Wasson making the score 4-3 for the Blizzard at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Turfdogs really gained momentum scoring five consecutive goals from Thomas Hoggarth, Coady Adamson, Josh Wasson, Jesse Guerin, and Tim Bergin. Michael Teeter and Connor Latimer would score for Barrie, making the score 8-6 for Durham at the end of the first half.

At the start of the third, Mike Mawdsley scored just a minute into play for the Blizzard. However, the Turfdogs hit another scoring streak seeing goals from Guerin, Tim Bergin, John St. John and McNulty. Mawdsley added another for Barrie, but at the end of the third Durham led 13-8.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Barrie needed to come out hard to catch up to Durham’s five-goal lead. Kevin Harper and Johnny Rae added a goal for the Blizzard but it was not enough. The Turfdogs tallied the final goal of the game from Dylan Goddard making the final score 14-10.

Barrie’s Teeter Named Offensive Player of the Week

The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) is pleased to announce its Players of the Week for week two of the 2015 Season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Michael Teeter – Barrie Blizzard – Teeter was a key player in Barrie’s first win of the season netting four goals and one assist. Teeter joined the Blizzard this week after Colin Boucher was signed to a 1-year contract with Vancouver Stealth of the NLL.

Honourable Mention: Corey Fowler – Niagara Lock Monsters - Fowler was able to rack up three goals and two assists for the Lock Monsters.

Defensive Player of the Week: Thomas Hoggarth – Durham Turfdogs - Hoggarth was solid on defence causing a number of turnovers. Hoggarth also added his first goal of the season this weekend.

Honourable Mention: Jake Henhawk – Ohsweken Demons – Henhawk made 28 saves in his first game of the season, which included some crucial stops in the final minutes to secure a Demons’ win.

Transition Player of the Week: Tom Montour– Ohsweken Demons – Montour picked up two goals and four assists; he was instrumental in sparking a fourth quarter rally.

Honourable Mention: Dylan Goddard – Durham Turfdogs - Goddard was a key part of the Turfdogs transition game picking up two goals and one assist.

Rookie of the Week: Mark Vradenburg – Niagara Lock Monsters – The 2nd round pick in the 2014 Entry Draft recorded a hat trick and added an assist, making a big impact for the Lock Monsters.

Honourable Mention: Josh Becker – Ohsweken Demons – Becker showed that he is well suited for CLax in his season debut generating numerous scoring chances and playing stellar defence.

Barrie Blizzard Pick Up First Win of the Season on the Road in Durham

The Barrie Blizzard were victorious in their second game of the season, picking up a close 14-10 win over the Durham Turfdogs on Saturday afternoon. This nail biting game was filled with lots of goals and even more aggression. Both teams would rack up penalty minutes, in what was the most physical game so far in the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) 2015 season.

Barrie was quick to open the scoring when captain Spencer Janes scored less than 2 minutes into the game. The Turfdogs responded quickly with a goal from Dylan Goddard. Barrie’s, Michael Teeter, who was activated to the Blizzard’s roster with Colin Boucher being signed to the Vancouver Stealth added another goal, which ignited a scoring streak with consecutive goals from Shane Scott, Jayson Crawford, another from Teeter, Cam Monroe and Mike Mawdsley. Kevin Croswell would replace Durham starter Cole Murray after the Blizzard’s fourth goal. The score would be 7-2 for Barrie at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, the game would begin to get rough as both teams racked up penalty minutes, highlighted by a fight between Durham’s Kyle Clancy and Barrie’s Mike Gillan. This seemed to ignite the Turfdogs who would erupt with goals from Thomas Hoggarth, Joe Wasson, and Goddard ending the first half with Barrie leading 8-5.

In the third quarter, the Turfdogs continued to gain momentum. Tim Bergin would notch back to back goals, with Josh Wasson and Geoff McNulty adding singles for Durham. Mike Gillan scored for the Blizzard and Teeter added his fourth goal of the game. At the end of the third quarter only one goal separated the teams with Barrie leading 10-9.

In the final quarter, the teams would exchange goals with Brad Levick putting the Blizzard up 12-10, and with two minutes remaining, the Turfdogs pulled goaltender Kevin Croswell for the extra attacker. However, Barrie’s Darryl Robertson would bury an empty net goal, which was quickly followed by another Blizzard goal by Mike Gillan, leading the Blizzard on to a 14-10 win.

Blizzard’s Colin Boucher Signed by Vancouver Stealth of NLL

Barrie Blizzard defensive standout, Colin Boucher has recently signed a one year deal with the Vancouver Stealth of the National Lacrosse League. Boucher has been one of the league’s elite defenders for 3 seasons, winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2012 and 2014. Most recently, Boucher was released by the Colorado Mammoth at the end of training camp. Last season, Boucher spent time on the Buffalo Bandits practice roster while suiting up for the Blizzard, helping Barrie to clinch their first team playoff appearance.

Barrie’s Mike Mawdsley Receives Honourable Mention In Week One

BARRIE, ON – Wednesday, January 14, 2015 – The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) is pleased to announce its first Players of the Week for the 2015 Season.

Offensive Player of the Week: Kyle Clancy – Durham Turfdogs – Clancy dominated last weekend racking up 5 assists and 1 goal leading the Turfdogs victory in the season opener.

Honourable mention goes to Southwest’s Dan Keane. Keane was able to tally 4 goals his CLax debut.

Defensive Player of the Week: Cole Murray – Durham Turfdogs – Murray was rock solid allowing only 4 goals against on 49 shots. He also added an assist for the Turfdogs.

Honourable mention goes to Southwest’s Eric Pitre. Pitre was an aggressor on defence for the Cyclops. He also gained an assist.

Transition Player of the Week: Mark Farthing – Durham Turfdogs – Farthing kicked off the scoring for the season as he pulled away for a breakaway goal just 1:41 into the game.

Honourable mention goes to Barrie’s Mike Mawdsley. Mawdsley was instrumental in the Blizzard’s efforts for a comeback. He managed to get a hat trick and 2 assists.

Rookie of the Week: Dan Keane – Southwest Cyclops – The 1st round pick in the 2014 Entry Draft racked up 4 goals for the Cyclops, and proved why he was so desired in this year’s draft.

Honourable mention goes to Niagara’s Dustin Gatt. Gatt displayed a tremendous amount of hard work and heart on the floor in his CLax premier. He added a goal for the Lock Monsters.

Barrie Blizzard Fall to Southwest Cyclops in Home Opener

The Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax) continued to kick off their 2015 season on Sunday when the Barrie Blizzard hosted the Southwest Cyclops. This game proved to be close with the final score being 13-11 for the Southwest.

The Cyclops were quick to open the scoring when Blair Goss scored just a minute and 30 seconds in, followed by a goal from Matt Spanger and Ryan MacGregor. Brad Levick was first to add to the scoreboard for the Blizzard having back-to-back goals. The Cyclops would quickly answer back with 3 consecutive goals making the score 6-2 for the Cyclops at the end of the first.

At the start of the second quarter it looked as though the game would be a blow out when MacGregor scored another goal for the Cyclops. However, the Blizzard came back and scored 4 consecutive goals, making the score 7-6 for the Cyclops at the end of the first half.

In the third, the Cyclops came back ready to play scoring 4 goals. The Blizzard seemed to have lost their momentum but with less than five minutes remaining they scored 3 goals. Entering the final quarter the Cyclops led 11-9.

In the fourth, Dane Keane added his fourth goal of the game. Barrie quickly answered back with goals from Mike Mawdsley and Mike Gillan. With hopes of tying the game, Barrie pulled goalie Angus Dineley. However Mike Burke was able to pull away and score for the Cyclops, making the final score 13-11
