Sonar and Heartbeat first met when Sonar was sent on a secret mission to capture a villain that had been evading SDN for a while.

Upon arrival (in his megabat form) at the abandoned warehouse they were allegedly spotted near, he felt a chilling sensation as if something was inside of his veins. Eventually, he completely lost control of his body, and was paralyzed in place. Shortly after he was confronted by a fellow megabat.

They let their guard down around him, curious about meeting a fellow bat hybrid. Then he tranquilized them, and they were taken in by SDN agents. He did not hear about what happened to them afterwards, and did not care to ask.

Fast forward a few months, Malevola tells Sonar about a bat hybrid she encountered at a training for heroes with healing abilities. He later runs into said hybrid after a particularly taxing dispatch, and is treated by them.

They introduce themselves as Heartbeat, a recent recruit to the Phoenix Program.
