i know he’s fictional and all but “mike stays repressed, turns into his dad and dies alone, while will is happy and thriving” is a thought that should make you sad, not vindicated. you think that a queer character deserves a lifetime of misery and self loathing just because he was insensitive as a teenager and couldn’t come to terms with his feelings fast enough? or even if you interpret him as straight now, then he deserves it because he didn’t reciprocate feelings? it makes you happy to see him lost and grieving because his girlfriend killed herself in front of him? 😭😭 ok. well i hope you know that even if he moves on from his feelings for mike and finds happiness in someone else, will byers would never want that fate for anyone, especially not his best friend.

they are so fucking sick in the head for killing Jane actually. like. even if you wanted to kill away something that represented childhood magic, you do that when she's still as a mystical figure none of the characters really had time to form a real tangible bond with (aka the planned ending for season 1).

You do not do THAT when you've spent several seasons building her character into something tangible, into a real person who discovers herself and learns what she loves?? not when all of your characters have come to care more or less deeply for her?? THAT IS SO FUCKED UP??

once you actually look at how will and mike’s scenes were shot, it becomes impossible to take the “byler was never happening” line seriously. for the duffers to say that is absolute bullshit, and everything about the cinematography calls them liars. the camera tells a completely different story than the one they’re pretending they wrote. it’s an absolute disgrace they didn’t get the ending they were clearly being built toward. together.

and i can’t stop thinking about how will and mike actually have more romantic framing than mike and el ever did. like, once you see it, you can’t unsee it. mike and el’s scenes are often wide, functional, plot‑driven, the camera doesn’t soften for them, doesn’t linger, doesn’t breathe. but with byler? the entire visual tone shifts. suddenly the framing is intimate. the lighting is warm. the camera holds on their faces like it’s waiting for a confession. that’s not how you shoot “just friends.” that’s how you shoot a love story the script is too scared to commit to.

and there’s a reason why there are numerous romantic parallels to the other couples in the show. the warm, tender lighting that the show only uses when it wants the audience to feel softness. these aren’t coincidences. these are deliberate echoes. the cinematography is doing the storytelling the writers later denied.

and then you compare that to how the show frames its platonic duos, lucas/dustin, mike/lucas, will/el,mike/dustin, lucas/will and dustin/will, and the difference is night and day. those scenes are shot wider, looser, more comedic, more kinetic. the camera doesn’t cradle them. it doesn’t create that pocket of emotional stillness that byler scenes always fall into. the visual language literally shifts when it’s the two of them.

the blocking, the eyelines, the shot composition, the romantic parallels, the way the camera keeps insisting on a story the writers backed away from. because when you look at the visual storytelling, the emotional architecture, the deliberate echoes of other couples, and the fact that byler had more romantic framing than the canon romance… the claim that “it was never happening” collapses instantly. the cinematography itself contradicts them.
