“I got...oh no.”-Mute
“And here I thought you died in a decrepit ruin somewhere.” -Savos
22nd of Frostfall
Axiy and I got up bright and early. It was snowing heavily outside, but we could make out two dragons; one perched on top of the building and the other hovering in the air. We ducked behind a barrel and listened to the dragons talk with one another, not shoot fire, not gobble up lone horses but talk in their dragon language. I wish I knew what they were saying.
Fireballs shot out from the college, striking the dragons repeatedly. The dragons tried to put up a fight but were unable to fire back at the mages of the colleges. They took off roaring fiercely. I hope they do not bring back friends or my college days will be short.
In the court yard, I saw family friend Enthir and various other mages of the college. His elf eyes brightened when he saw me.
“Mute! Good to see you. You hear on a social call or ready to learn.”
“I’m here for a month to learn what you have to teach me.”
He laughed heartily. “A month? You expect to learn how to use telepathy in a month child? You better clear your calendar for the next few years. Possibly even longer since you are going to be way behind any other student. Have you even cast one spell?”
“Does Nocturnal’s gift count? I can turn invisible for a short amount of time.” I wrote sheepishly.
"I’m not sure if a gods gift helps your overall magical abilities. A year at best, Mute.”
Brynjolf is going to complain and complain and complain. I was secretly hoping that it would be easy. Foolish me.
“Forgive me for interrupting, sir. I’ll be teaching her as well. Mute has suffered a great injury and she requires magic to be able to keep walking. I plan to teach her how to phase objects through other objects. Will that be alright?”
Enthir pulled at his chin.“The hall of elements is open to everyone studying and practicing spells but...you look familiar...who are you?”
“I am Axiy Wyn. I used to study here when I was younger. Is Savos Aren still a teacher here?”
“Not anymore! I’m the Arch Mage.” Another elf walked up to us. Axiy was visibly excited. “And here I thought you had died in some decrepit ruin somewhere. Here to become a teacher?”
“ Heh, heh. No. I am just here to help my patient. You know school of restoration has always been my favorite.”
“It’s good to have you back, but a shame that you couldn’t be a teacher. I’d take you on as an adviser, but that position has been filled-”
“-by someone from the Thalmor.” Enthir finished. “An annoying idiot who spends his time sneering at everyone and not actually doing anything of merit. While you two are here, I’d suggest keeping away from him.”
We both nodded. Savos continued. “He has made things around here and Winterhold very tense. The towns people are already uneasy with a Thalmor agent being here and now dragons return. We are being called traitors and bringing upon the end of days. We can’t win.”
“Well enough pleasantries. Class will be started soon. Axiy you know where the dorms are. Get Mute situated and meet everyone in the Hall of Elements.”
When I saw the uniform, I instantly wanted to find the nearest person in charge to ask for something warmer. Did they really expect students to walk around in this flimsy outfit without turning into a frozen statue? Yes, they did but to add comfort to the students, the clothes were enchanted to keep heat up the body. I stepped outside and braced myself to be slapped by the cold winds and I was pleasantly surprised. Magic is just...wonderful.
“You look very nice, Miss Mute.” Axiy grabbed my arm to help me walk along the courtyard faster, so I would not be late. “Nervous?” I nodded. “Don’t be. With a lot of hard work, anyone can learn magic. I think your god’s gift gives you a little help.”
We went through the doors and into the Hall of Elements. Whatever the word that combines nervous and excitement, I was that word.
There were three other students in the hall: An elf woman named Brelyna, a nord man named Onmund and a male Khajiit named J’zargo. I could just feel that they were on another level than me. The closer we got, the more nervous I got. Axiy tried to relax me with a gentle squeeze on the shoulder.
“Some more students have joined. Welcome, wel-oh! Axiy is that you? What a nice surprise! Students, we all know of this great man, don’t we? What a treat that he is here today ”
“Hello, Tolfdir. It is good to see you again.” Axiy is a bit of a celebrity here, it seems. The other students were almost worshiped the ground he walked on. “Nice to meet you all.
“Going to be teaching now?”
“No, no.” The elf woman sighed the loudest. “I’m here for your new student, Miss Mute. She’s eager to learn. A quick word to you all. Miss Mute does not have the ability to speak. She communicates with journals. Please respect that. Well, don’t let me interrupt anything more. I’ll be over here.”
“Welcome Miss Mute. So, as I was saying, the first thing to understand is that magic is, by its very nature, volatile and dangerous. Unless you can control it, it can and will destroy you.”
“Sir, I think we all understand that fairly well. We wouldn’t be here if we couldn’t control magic!” Mmm, speak for yourself Brelyna.
“Of course, my dear. of course. You all certainly possess some in hernt natural ability. That much is not being questioned. What I’m talking about is true control, mastery of magic. It takes years, if not decades, of practice and study.” Oh jeez. I am really going to be here for a long time. Brynjolf is going to be so upset. How am I going to be guildmaster if I’m here? What to do..
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s get started.” J’zargo said.
“Please, please! This is exactly what I’m talking about. Eagerness must be tempered with caution, or else disaster is inevitable.”
“But we’ve only just arrived here--you’ve no iea what any of us are capable of. Why not give us a chance to show what we can do?” Said Onmund.
The teacher turned to me. “You’ve been quiet so far. What do you think we should do?” My eyes went wide. Why ask me? I don’t know...
“Safety should be more important than anything. I hear the “blowing yourself up” joke a lot when it comes to magic. I’m missing a hand and my spine is being held up by dwarven metal. I don’t think Axiy can stitch blown up pieces back together.”
“Well, your classmates certainly seem to disagree with you. To continue with our theme of safety, we’ll start with Wards. Wards are protective spells that block magic. Miss Mute, would you mind helping me with the demonstration? Are you at all familar with wards spells?” I shook my head no and begged with my eyes for him to pick someone else. “That’s alright. I can teach you a very basic ward, one that’s enough for the purpose of this lesson. Would you mind standing over there please? I’ll fire a harmless spell at you and you’ll block it with the ward.”
Axiy came from the shadows to help me over to the designated spot. He could feel the worry radiating from me. “Wards are easy.” He whispered. “Close your eyes, clear your mind. Find zen. Don’t think of anyone else in the room. Try to tap into that well of energy that allows you to use your God’s gift. Imagine moving that energy to your fingertips and shape it into a wall of pure magical energy. Good luck.”
He gave me a lot more advice than the teacher did! Axiy should be a teacher.
“Now cast the ward spell and keep it up. I don’t want to hit you.” Toldir said, readying a spell.
I closed my eyes and extended my hand, my fake one. Not sure why, but it felt like the right hand. I felt something strange in that arm. Blocking out all noise, I imagined Nocturnal’s gift as glittering energy resting at my stomach. I imagined a small whirlwind lifting up that energy and guiding it to my left hand. I opened up one eye and saw little flecks of white sparking from my fingers. ‘Am I doing it?’ I asked myself.
“There we go Mute. Now let it all out. Push it forward!” Axiy called out from the sidelines.
I was elated when a watery like shield busted from my fingertips. I lost my focus though. It lasted for a split second and faded away. Then a fireball knocked me off my feet and unconscious.
I awoke in my dorm room...to Hoth’s loud laughter.
“Hoth. Please. It’s not fu-Oh, thank goodness! You are awake.” Axiy was at my side.
“What happened?” I asked once the room stopped spinning.
“You-”
“-You got blasted in the face, slipped and hit your sweet spot and your big head. You passed out. Ha ha ha ha!” I threw my pillow at Hoth. Didn’t shut him up. He laughed harder. “Ha ha ha ha ha!”
“Ignore him. You did great for a student. Your back is alright as well. Just very tender. You have got a little bump on the back of your head as well. As long as you don’t sleep for a few hours.”
“Thanks for the help Axiy.”
“Of course. I’ll go get you some water. Hoth, be nice.”
I held my face in complete shame. Harmless little burst of magic took me out. I must be the laughing stock of the entire college.
“Cheer up Mute. Everybody fucks up one way or another.” Hoth said, handing me a mead bottle. “People are gonna laugh for a while, tease you mercilessly, give ya a nice name. You can either get over it one of two ways. Become the best mage ever or kill them all and hide the bodies. Hmm, you could do both actually.”
“How much do I have to pay you to kill them for me.”
“I’ll do it for free. Provided I get to see you topless.”
“How about this. You can see me topless for as long as I held my ward up. A half second.”
“S’all I need. The clock starts once the shirt’s off.”
“Damn. You are as dumb as you look. No deal.”
“Have fun dragging the bodies to a hiding spot gimpy.”
Hoth actually made me feel better. In his own way, he cheered me up.
...
No it’s just the concussion talking.
21st of Frostfall
“Please be safe, lass.” Brynjolf said to me, my backpack full of supplies and journals in his hand.
“I will.”
“You’ll write to me, yeah? If you get contacted by the Dark Brotherhood, tell me straight away.” His free hand found my fleshy one. It was rather cold, I noticed. I wonder if he’s sick?
“Of course. If you get contacted, don’t be a hero. Let me know what’s happening with the guild.”
“If anything happens you’ll be the first to know.”
A kiss was placed upon my forehead. Loving, yet as cold as his hand. I don’t know if I shivered from the kiss or it’s chill. I was about to ask him if he were feeling alright when my two traveling companions made themselves known to us.
“Shit, we are just going to Winterhold. Tone it down.”
“Hoth, please. The two of them are going to miss each other. They were just reunited and now they are going to separate. It’s quite romantic.”
“I dunno if I like you anymore doc.”
“Can I help the two of you?” Brynjolf sighed.
“We didn’t mean to interrupt. Just wanted to inform you that the horses are ready” Axiy said with a small bow of his head.
“Yeah, so enough of this mushy shit. Let’s get going.” Hoth held out his hand to receive my backpack. Brynjolf handed it to him slowly.
“Look after her, will you? She’s a bit of an idiot.” He said. My eyes rolled and I elbowed him in his healing ribs. “I-I was kidding. Heh heh. Ouch...”
When his ribs started aching, he gave me another cold kiss on the forehead. Hoth and Axiy sighed for different reasons. We said our goodbyes and left for Winterhold.
We saw something splendid along the road. It was the same thing Rune talked about on his adventure. Imperial Guards had gotten into a battle with a bright orange dragon. Despite it shooting fire that Hoth, Axiy and I felt from a safe vantage point, the guards were winning. A well placed arrow pierced it’s eye and the dragon let out a final roar and collapsed onto the ground before their feet. The dragon’s body began to make loud sizzling noises like it’s flesh was burning. Scaly flakes began floating slowly in the air like lightening bugs are night. Then as we were getting lulled by the sleepy scene a gust of powerful wind swept the flakes up into the air and flew to the west. The dragon was nothing but bones on the road now.
“What magic did that...?” Axiy whispered. “Nothing I’ve ever read describes this...”
“I think I know what this is. It’s something my father used to read me as a boy.” Hoth had our full attention. “Don’t remember much of it, but the only person that can do that to a dragon, to take it’s essence, was the dragon born. A guy or girl with the soul of the dragon. Thought it was a fairy tail.”
“Looks like it isn’t. I wonder who this dragon born is? Will he or she bring the end of the dragons once more?”
“Dunno.”
“I must find more books on the Dragon born. How fascinating.” Axiy said with glee.
We waited til the guards left to get closer to the dragon bones and then leave.
Our horses were fast enough to make it to Windhelm before dark. Because of my back that we had to stop, the bouncing of the horse aggravated it.
“I knew I should have had you on my lap. Making us waste daylight.” Hoth helped me down from the horse and carried me past Windhelm’s gates and into the local inn. I could have walked. I think Hoth gets off with being a macho.
Axiy rented us a room for the night and had Hoth place me on my stomach so he could look my back over and heal me. While Hoth was getting drunk elsewhere, I decided to ask Axiy something personal about his life.
“It looks like you will be alright, Miss Mute. Just a little soreness. Stitches are in good condition. A little healing and a health potion will help with the pain. I do suggest riding with either Hoth or I.It will take off some of the shock.” I could feel the warmth of his magic go deep in my back. “I suggest you start keeping track of how long you have a soul gem inside of you. I’ll insert a new one so you can start fresh. Remember, these last a month.”
“Thank you Axiy. I’m feeling stiff in my legs...anything to help with that?”
“Some stretching should help. Here’s what we’ll do. I’ll bend your legs for you and then we’ll do some stretches together.”
“Axiy. Do you mind me asking a question?”
“I’ll answer to the best of my abilities, Miss Mute. I assume it’s going to be personal. How about we trade a question for a question?”
“Fair enough. My question for you is: Are you and your wife not together?”
“Oh. She and I are still together. It’s a..well...”He stopped bending my right leg. “It’s complicated.”
“Why is it complicated?”
“I believe it’s my turn now.” He resumed bending and pulling at my legs. “Why did you become”
“I was raised to be one. My birth parents are dead or alive somewhere. I was found by a master thief and I just kept at it. My turn. Why is it complicated with your wife?”
“It just is.”
“That’s not fair and you know it.”
He sighed. “We don’t love each other. It was a forced...arranged marriage between our families. You are going to be the only I told this to. My wife and I are together for appearances. What our families don’t know is that we...we go outside of our marriage. She’s a very nice women, please don’t misunderstand me. I just don’t love her and she doesn’t love me.” He sighed once more. “I...I don’t know how long we can keep this up.” He moved on to my other leg, using bursts of his healing powers. I was feeling very relaxed. “My turn now. Do you ever feel bad for what you do?”
“No. I don’t. There are people who I won’t steal from. I mostly go for store owners and rich folk. More things to steal and make a profit. So, your daughter doesn’t know that her parents don’t love each other at all?”
“She doesn’t even know that she isn’t my child.” He whispered sadly. I hung on his every word. “She belongs to another man but I treat her as mine. I always feared the day her real father would blow our cover and take he away, but he doesn’t care for her at all. Fine by me.” He was silent for a while. I awaited his next question but he continued. “I wonder if she’ll hate me when I do tell her. Will she want to stop being my little one and go reconnect with her real father? That will crush me more than the disappointment from my family.Well my turn. Do you have any children with your mate?”
“Brynjolf isn’t my mate. And no, I have no children.”
“Really? With how you were so willing to sacrifice yourself, I thought he was your mate.”
“We are dating. Testing the waters, so to speak.”
“Ah. Well good luck to you. I envy how free you are in that aspect. It’s your turn, Miss Mute.”
“Why are you here in Skyrim if your family is in Summerset?”
“I love dwarven ruins. I adore charting out the tunnels and researching the automatons. I’ve been studying how to summon my own automatons with magic. I’ve made a few of my own. I became inspired back home after reading works of Calcelmo. The man is a genius.”
“I know of him. I had to steal his keys to get into his museum. Needed his work to prove that the old leader was a lying fraud. I also built my goggles based on his work.”
“Oh. Stole from him eh? The goggles aren’t his work. They were made by dwarven scholars. I’ve found my own in Blackreach.” He showed me his own. Looked a bit different from the one I have. “How was his museum? I have always wanted to go.”
“Is that your question?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Looks like a Dwarven ruin. I didn’t really look and admire the sights. Was trying to solve a decade old murder.”
“Ah. I see. I’ll find out one day once I make it over there. Anymore questions?”
“What are you going to do if your parents ever find out that you and your wife are just pretending?”
“I don’t know. I love my family and I’d hate to bring shame to them, to shun me, but I want to be happy myself. I want my own family, a wife that I chose. One who likes crawling into dark caves. One who won’t get scared when we discover falmer or there slimy little pets. One who actually loves me...” He had longed stop massaging my legs and stared at a spot on the bed. “You think if I start worshiping Nocturnal, I will be lucky enough to keep my family’s love and find my own love?”
“I’m counting that as a question and yes. She’ll mend your family while her children steal everything you own.”
He laughed. “Then sign me up. I have too much stuff anyway.”
The door to our room slammed open, didn’t have to even look at the door to know who it was. “Hey. You two done in here? We going or what?”
“Why don’t we stay here for the night, Hoth. We have the room for the rest of the day. Might as well.”
“Skies look clear. We’re a stones throw away from Winterhold. Come on. Come on.”
“The school won’t be open at night anyway.”
“So we’ll stay in the inn there. Go in there, tell the woman you’re leaving and let’s get going.”
“So be it.” Axiy shrugged and left to the inn keeper. Hoth leaned up against the wall tapping his fingers against his the white tattoos on his arm.
“This is the first place I met you, Hoth. At the bar.”
“Huh? Oh yeah it is. I know how anniversaries are important to you women, so we’ll celebrate later. I’ll bring the mead and you wear something sexy. Red is my favorite color.”
“Oh yeah. Sure. But aren’t you so worried that your sheer male power might break my spine?”
“It’s a special night so I’ll be gentle.”
“I don’t know if I need to throw up because of my back or you?”
“I have that effect on women.”
“Making women want to throw up is something to be proud of? Alright then. Small accomplishments lead to big ones. Why are you in such a rush, anyway? I want to get there sooner than later too, but we might as well enjoy the warmth.”
“I got in a fight with the town idiot outside in the market. Guards are looking for a guy with a skull mask.”
I snorted. “Why did you get into a fight?”
“He got a little handsy with a grey elf. Not the good kind of handsy, either. If you know anything about Windhelm, they don’t give a shit about them. Dirt is more important than the grey elves here. There’re gunning for me because I had the nerve to defend her. So-.” My bag was grabbed and I was scooped up.”- up you go “ We almost knocked Axiy off his feet when we turned the corner.
“The lady wouldn’t give me back my money.” Axiy said.
“Whatever. The bitch can keep it. Let’s go.” Hoth tossed my bag to Axiy.
There were guards outside, questioning about Hoth’s whereabouts. How they missed the big muscly man sneaking away is beyond me. My horse was roped with Axiy’s so he could lead it. I was stuck sitting with Hoth again.
The stars were blocked out with rainbow colored northern lights, the only good thing about the cold north. If I didn’t freeze to death in minutes, I could stare at them for hours. Takes my breath away.
Just before the the innkeepers of Winterhold were ready to go to bed, we came in covered in snow requesting a room. We melted by the fireplace while eating some supplies.
“Are you going to go in the college as well, Hoth?”
“I’m not setting foot in there unless I gotta. Like I told her, you need me, holler. I’ll be around here.”
“Magic is nothing to be afraid of.”
“I ain’t afraid of anything. I don’t trust magic.”
“I yearn for the day Skyrim’s nords will be more willing to learn or be around magic.” Axiy stood up and brush away some un-melted snow. “I hope you are just as excited as I am, Miss Mute. Good night to the both of you ”
“Thought that guy would never leave.” Hoth said in his mug. “Wanna celebrate next to the fire place or in the bed?”
“I’m going to bed, you moron.”
“Bed might be better. Don’t wanna get too hot and the innkeepers might catch us.”
“Goodnight Hoth.”
“Brynjolf doesn’t have to know.”
“Goodnight Hoth.” I snapped my voice shut and stood up on stiff legs.
Hoth gave a grandiose sigh and helped me to my room, my arm over his shoulder. With how tall he was, he might as well have carried me. My feet grazed the ground.
In my room, Hoth didn’t let me go, his arm snaked around my waist. I felt something but I’m not sure what is was. Fear? I don’t really know Hoth like that. Whose to say he wouldn’t just take what he wanted? He seemed like the kind of guy. Is it weird that I hope it was fear and not the other thing that’s going to make me hate myself for the rest of my days?
“You’re reacting more than when Brynjolf holds you. Yeah I’ve been watching. Wasn’t anything else to do around that sewer you hide around in.” Please just let it be fear. Not this guy. Why him? Is it because I haven’t really done anything in years with a man? Am I starved and desperate? Body, please. A horker would treat you so much better. “It’ll be fun. I might even let you finish.”
I rolled my eyes and pushed at his laughing body.
“It’s a joke woman. I'm gonna be serious now. I swear.” His deep stare made me ever more nervous than before.” Let’s fuck.”
I pointed at the door, putting all my hatred and annoyance into a glare. He laughed, louder this time, and let me go.
“If you change your mind, I’ll be next door.” I slammed the door behind him and limped towards my bed and collapse.
Let me get this straight, my broken body. Brynjolf, sweetest man I’ve known for all of my life, not interested in. Hoth, crude idiot I’ve known for almost a month, shakes the perch the butterflies were resting upon.
I will set fire to those butterflies if they don’t quit it.
“I knew this would happen. I just knew they would find out, lass. You’re in danger.”
The party was in full swing. Brynjolf and I were sitting away from it, resting our damaged bodies. I decided to show him the note and he rightly flipped out.
“Aye, lass. They’ve started a war.”
“It’s no war. Relax, Bryn.”
“You don’t know what this note means, Mute.” He said pushing the note away from him like it insulted him.
“It means that they know. That’s it. They know who did it. They contacted me. If anything else happens, they will contact me again.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of. They are elite assassins. They could kill you while you sleep or out on a walk.”
“I have faith that the Brotherhood won’t be that petty. If they are upset at the pay I will give them the damn plate.”
“Delvin seems to think we should be on our guard. You know he doesn’t have good things to say about that lot.”
“We will be on our guard, but we won’t allow them to scare us.”
“I’m not scared, lass. I’m worried...for you. You are especially weak right now and if you were attacked it’d be like spearing slaughter fish in a barrel.”
“It won’t be that easy. I won’t go down without a fight. I also have Nocturnal’s blessing and other Nightingales at my side. Have some faith in me, will you?”
His hand found it’s way to my shoulder. “I got faith in you. I don’t got faith in them.”
“It will be alright. If things go wrong, you can sing “I told you so” til my ears bleed. Deal?”
He gave a hearty laugh then held his side.. “Ach, don’t make me laugh it hurts. Heh heh, I’ll sing the ‘I told you so’ song but not at your funeral, I hope.”
I rolled my eyes. If I didn’t get taken down by Mercer Frey and a dragon, then I’ll be damned if I get taken down by them. “What are you going to do while the group is away?”
“I’m gonna stay here and watch over the guild. Keep my ear to the streets so when you lazy lot comes back I can fill you in.”
“Aren’t you going to be bored? Lonely?”
“Nah. Every so often I need a break from people.”
“You know, you could use this time to go after that woman your interested in.”
“I don’t think so. She’ll be busy going to this school in Winterhold. She always has something to do.”
“She’s going to the same college I am? What’s he name? What does she look like? If you are nice to me I can put in a good word for you.”
“How are you our guild master?” He asked me dramatically putting his hands on his own face.
“You made me guild master. Did you forget?”
“I’ve made a horrible mistake.”
“Will you stop acting like an idiot. Forgive me for not being so in tune with your love life Brynjolf. I don’t know who this girl is. Just tell me. Maybe I can help so you can shut up about her.”
“Didn’t I say don’t make me laugh?” He wheezed and held his side again. “Alright. You want me to tell you who this girl is? Fine.” He slid his chair closer to mine and sighed. “ I’m sitting next to her. If you don’t get it now then there is no hope for you.”
I am embarrassed. This entire time he was talking about...me. By the gods. How was I so deaf with his hints? Things were hectic back then, but his hints weren’t from a master puzzle maker. I pointed to myself rather than wasting space in my voice.
“The lass finally gets it. Give the sweetie a sweet roll. Don’t worry. I won’t tease you too much about this. Yes it’s you. It’s always been you. I’ve uh...I’ve had a big crush on you for the longest time now.”
“Why did it take you so long to say something?” My hands were shaky as I wrote.
“Have you ever had a crush on someone lass? It’s not always easy to go up to them and tell the how you feel. I was scared of what you might say. Scared what Mercer might do to me if I courted you.”
“I’ve seen you go after other women with ease...” Why me? Why does he want me?
“You’re different Mute. I actually want a...a future with you. Hmm, you’ve really never taken a liking to someone have you? I...I don’t think I’ve actually see you date.”
“I have dated once or twice. I just never brought it up around you guys. When I’m down here, I just focus on how much gold I can bring in.” And I was frankly embarrassed at the person I decided to go after. Gods. I don’t even want to think about that part of my life.
“Who’ve you dated?” He asked looking shocked.
“It doesn’t matter. I had no idea about your feelings, Brynjolf.”
“It’s alright. I forgive you. Well...how do you feel about all of this? Do you...do you feel the same.”
“Please...don’t take this the wrong way Brynjolf, but I don’t have any feelings. I never saw you the way you see me. I considered you a brother, really. Family. My best friend.”
“I understand. I guess what I want to ask now is...would you be willing to see me in that way? Would you be willing to give it a chance? Not saying let’s get married just a...just a trial run so to speak.”
“I am worried that this will go horribly wrong and we become bitter towards one another. I don’t think a relationship is worth ruining our friendship or even the guild. I have to think about it.”
“It’s better than a no. I’ll take it. Try not to think about if we fail. It’s not going to warm you up to the idea of me.
“You know me. I like to overthink things.”
“But never the right things.” He was talking about the issue of the Dark Brotherhood. I waved his comment off. “Even though I didn’t get the reaction I wanted, the weight is off my chest and I’m happy. This will be great lass, I know it.” He kissed me on the cheek and was later called away by Delvin to lock up our main vault
I was shocked at the chaste kiss, but other than that I felt nothing else. Am I supposed to feel sparks and fire in my stomach? Is it like those romantic books, that I’ve glossed over in bordem or am I basing this on flowery words? Gods...maybe I should have just said no. I’m so confused. I really have no good feelings about this. Brynjolf’s weight that was once on his chest is now on mine. It will be alight. I’ll be away for a while in Winterhold and it will give me more time to think about this.
Hoth came over to sit with me after Brynjolf left. I needed a distraction, but not from Hoth.
“Enjoying yourself Hoth?” I asked.
“Yeah. It aint the worse party i’ve been too. Food is decent. Mead is mead. That Vex girl is pretty cute. My type of woman.”
“You are gonna have to stand in line. Vex has a lot of admirers down here.”
“They can’t hold a candle to me. Watch, you’ll be hearing about how we had sex tomorrow.”
I wrinkled my nose at the thought of that conversation.“I’d rather not, thank you.”
He gave a throaty laugh. “So going to Winterhold to study magic huh? I dunno if I can trust someone who uses all that hokus pokus..”
“That’s my plan. What are you going to now? Brynjolf and I are putting our trip on hold for some time. Axiy is coming with me to Winterhold.”
“Keep paying me and I’ll come with you. Not setting foot in that damn school though. Town is small enough. If someone is murdering you at that school I can hear you in the tavern.”
“It would be smart to take you with us. It is a long trip to Winterhold and if a dragon attacks Axiy and I can escape while it’s chewing on your body.”
“Keep talking and I’m going to feed you to a bear. When are we leaving?”
“Tomorrow morning. Bright and early. We can see the skies better.”
“Guess I better go put the moves on Vex now”
“Do you love her?” I didn’t realize I had written that. It just sort have came out. The idea of Hoth being in love with someone was interesting. I’m still shocked to learn that he had a wife. He might have been lying to me.
“Love? Hell no. I just want to sleep with her, obviously. Who do you take me for?”
“Just asking. Curious.”
He was silent for some time. The guild’s loud laughter wasn’t as loud as the gears turning in his head.“Ooh. I see. You’re jealous. If that’s the case, let’s go to your room then. Been wanting to pull those pigtails.”
I gasped. Where on earth did he get that!? “Oh gods! I am not jealous you insufferable man! Go to Vex! Go away! I want nothing to do with you!” I furiously wrote.
“Suuure. And all this sexual tension between us is nothing, right?”
“WHAT SEXUAL TENSION? THERE IS NONE YOU DELUDED GORILLA!” I broke the spine of my quill from gripping it so hard.
“You are right though. I should go to Vex. I don’t want to be having sex with you and knock your spine out. Call on me when you get better.”
He left me, my mouth agape from what just transpired. The utter nerve of this man! I am definitely not dealing with this on my trip to Winterhold! Ugh...
Before the party, Delvin delivered a letter to me while Axiy was helping me walk in my room. Opening it, the letter had a black hand print with two words underneath it saying: “We know.”
“You know what this is right boss?” Delvin asked and I nodded. “You think this is them making a move? I wouldn’t put it past Astrid. She isn’t a girl who likes change.”
“Uh...if you don’t mind me asking. What is this?” Axiy asked, looking over my shoulder. “Did this Astrid person send you some artwork?”
“It aint artwork. It’s a message from The Dark Brotherhood. They are a group of elite assassins. Boss, you think we should cancel our vacation? We might ‘ave to deal with this.”
“No, Delvin. We’ll let the boys still go home. If anything comes from this, I’ll deal with it. It was my idea, I stole their kill, I’ll face the Dark Brotherhood alone.”
“You aren’t alone boss. They mess with one of us, they mess with all of us.”
“I appreciate it, Delvin. Don’t worry about this. It’s nothing. Now how’s our going away party looking?”
“Just waiting on food from Vekal. Don’t change the subject boss. What are you gonna do about this?”
“Nothing. I’m not going to do anything. Just mind what I say, alright? Go help out Vekal or something. The Dark Brotherhood is the least of my concern right now.”
“You don’t know Astrid like I do, Mute. She may have a pretty face, but she’s a force to be reckoned with.”
“So am I. Now get going. This is not going to sully our party.”
“Alright...anything happen while I’m gone, you send me a letter.” Delvin said and shut my door behind him.
“Goodness, Miss Mute. Something always happening around here isn’t it?” Axiy asked. “I thought I heard you say that the thieves guild doesn’t kill. Why is this Astrid woman upset with you? What kill did you steal?”
“A young orphaned boy wanted to kill this abusive old woman that ran the orphanage here. With the Dark Brotherhood, they require some sort of sacrifice to get their attention. This boy had been doing it for weeks upon weeks. I took pity on him and killed the old woman.”
“Was she actually torturing this poor child?”
“Him and the rest of the children staying there. Tell me, do you think an orphanage requires a torture chamber?”
Axiy’s mouth hung open like a gutted fish. “I am not one to say these sort of things, but she deserved her death. I can’t imagine myself dying and trusting the care of my daughter to a woman such as she. My...imagine if the parents are looking down from the heavens, or wherever they are, and they see their offspring being harmed without being able to protect them like a parent should.” He visibly shuddered at his own thoughts. “You did a good thing. I’m sure you and The Dark Brotherhood could come to some sort of agreement on this matter.”
“Hopefully. I wasn’t expecting a payment from the child but I did recive one.” I pointed to the plate he gave me that was hung on my wall in the kitchen. “If they want to start something over a plate, then they are just a group of morons.”
“It would be more about the kill and their name yes? Wouldn’t you be upset if someone stole in your group’s name?”
“We had something like that happen to us, actually. These thieves went around killing their marks and we had to put an end to them. It’s different though. I made them look good in the eyes of those children. I’ve never killed in their name since.”
“Still...I think they have a right to take issue with this...but from your account, they probably would have never gotten around to him. How did they know it was you? Did the boy talk?”
“The boy didn’t know who I or Brynjolf was. They must have found out some other way...I’m not entirely sure.”
“I hope you can come to an agreement with them.”
“So do I.”
I clasp his elbows with my hands and he did the same to mine. To anyone outside of the situation, it looked like Axiy and I were awkwardly dancing to the music in our heads. I’m getting a little bit better now, faster than Axiy expected. I’m able to stand up on my own for an hour or two. As for walking, I’m about as fast as a drunk snail and stiff as a corpse.
While I was training, I had time to reflect about Dark Brotherhood matter but more about how Brynjolf will take the news once he finds out. I know if I tell him, he is going to give me quite the earful.
